Stanley Uris: Actors, Story and Fate in the IT Movies

Stanley Uris is a member of the Losers Club in the IT movies, played as a boy by Wyatt Oleff in It (2017) and as an adult by Andy Bean in It Chapter Two (2019), both directed by Andy Muschietti. He is the Loser who is called home to Derry but never arrives, and his absence hangs over the whole sequel.

Who Plays Young Stanley Uris?

Who Is Stanley Uris in the IT Movies?

Stanley Uris is a member of the Losers Club, the group of outcast kids in Derry, Maine who stand up to Pennywise, the clown that preys on the town's children. In It (2017), directed by Andy Muschietti, he is introduced as one of the wisecracking friends of Bill Denbrough, alongside Richie Tozier and Eddie Kaspbrak. The three of them are already looking for clues about Georgie Denbrough's disappearance when the story properly begins in the summer of 1989.

Two actors play him. Wyatt Oleff is credited as Stanley Uris in It (2017), and appears again as Young Stanley Uris in It Chapter Two (2019), which cuts back to the childhood summer. Andy Bean plays the adult Stanley in the sequel. The credits therefore list him under two names, Stanley Uris and Young Stanley Uris, which is a useful thing to know if you are searching a cast list and cannot find him.

The films adapt Stephen King's novel, and the gap between the book and the screen versions of the Losers is covered in the IT book vs movie comparison. For the full group, including the other six members, see the Losers Club page. If you want every member of the ensemble in one place, the IT characters index lists them all.

Stanley Uris Story Arc: From Derry Kid to Adult LoserSpoilers

Stanley's arc runs across both films: he is one of the seven kids who beat Pennywise in It (2017), and he is the one Loser who never returns in person for It Chapter Two (2019). In the first film he spends the summer of 1989 tracing what happened to Georgie, who was pulled into a storm drain by Pennywise the previous October. Each of the Losers is haunted by a vision tailored to their own fear, and the group works out that the creature they call It wakes about every 27 years to feed on Derry's children. That research points them to the abandoned house on Neibolt Street, which is the creature's way into the sewers.

The group frays after the Neibolt encounter, in which Beverly drives a spike into the creature's head and Ben is hurt. It is only when Pennywise snatches Beverly Marsh that the friends return together. In the sewers, Pennywise grabs Bill and offers to let the others go if they leave him behind. The Losers refuse, fight as a group and wound the creature, and It falls away weakened. At the end of summer they cut their palms and swear a blood oath to come back if the clown ever returns.

It Chapter Two (2019) picks that oath up 27 years later. In 2016 Pennywise returns, and Mike Hanlon, the one Loser who never left Derry, phones his old friends and calls them home. Bill, Ben, Beverly, Richie and Eddie come back, but Stanley, who is also called, takes his own life rather than return. The others learn this at the reunion dinner, which turns frightening almost at once. Beverly shows visions suggesting they will all die if they break the oath, so the group stays and Mike sends them off to find the personal objects his ritual needs.

Stanley returns only in memory, through Wyatt Oleff's Young Stanley in the flashbacks the adults recover, and through the letter he left behind for the group.

Stanley Uris and the Losers Club: Who He Is Closest To

Stanley's closest ties are to the other members of the Losers Club, and It (2017) places him first among the friends who search for Georgie with Bill, Richie and Eddie. Those four form the first core of the group, before they team up with Ben, Beverly and Mike after clashes with the bully Henry Bowers and his gang. Bowers is the human menace of the story, and Stanley, like the rest of the Losers, is one of the outcasts he picks on.

Bill Denbrough is the leader and the reason the group exists, since his refusal to accept that Georgie is dead keeps the search going. Richie and Eddie are the other two of the original friends, and in the sequel Richie Tozier and Eddie Kaspbrak return as adults alongside Bill. Ben Hanscom, Beverly and Mike round out the seven.

Mike is the relationship that matters most to Stanley's ending. In the sequel Mike phones each friend and calls them home, and the news of Stanley's death reaches the group at the reunion dinner. The HBO series IT: Welcome to Derry (2025) is television rather than a film, so it sits outside the two movies.

What Happened to Stanley Uris? His Death ExplainedSpoilers

Stanley Uris dies by suicide before the events of It Chapter Two (2019) properly begin, after Mike calls him home to Derry. The sequel states this at the reunion dinner, where the five returning Losers learn that Stanley has died instead of coming back.

So, if you are asking what happened to Stan in the Pennywise story, he is called home with the others and takes his own life rather than return to Derry.

His death shapes the rest of the plot. Beverly shows visions suggesting that all of them will die if they break their oath, which keeps the remaining Losers in Derry. Mike then sends them on separate searches for personal objects needed for a ritual, and the group goes into the final fight one member short. In the sewers Pennywise takes a huge spider form and tries to break them with their worst fears, and they destroy it by crushing its heart. Eddie dies in that fight, and the cavern collapses.

Stanley gets the last word after the fight. The marks on the Losers' hands fade, which shows the curse is broken, and Mike leaves Derry. Mike passes on Stanley's last letter, which Bill reads, and it ends by saying they are Losers and always will be.

Best Stanley Uris Moments in the IT Movies

In my opinion, Stanley's best moments are the quietest ones, and they come from the choices the two films let him make rather than from any set piece. The first is the group's refusal in the sewers of It (2017). When Pennywise grabs Bill and offers to let the others go if they leave him behind, the Losers refuse and fight together. Stanley is one of the friends standing there, and it is the clearest picture of why the group works: nobody trades a friend for a clean exit.

The second is the blood oath at the end of the summer. The seven cut their palms and promise to return if the clown comes back. It is the film's gentlest scene, and it matters more in the sequel because Stanley's choice is measured against it. It could be argued that the sequel only lands its tragedy because the oath felt sincere the first time.

The third is the dinner reunion in It Chapter Two (2019). The news of Stanley's death arrives at a dinner that quickly turns frightening, and it is where the surviving Losers first learn he is gone.

The last is the letter. Bill reads what Stanley left for the group, and it closes on the line that they are Losers and always will be. That being said, I would pick this over Eddie's death or the sewers fight as the emotional end of the saga, because it is the one moment where a character who sat out the final battle still gets the last word.
