Who Is in the Losers Club in IT?

The Losers Club has seven members: Bill Denbrough, Beverly Marsh, Ben Hanscom, Mike Hanlon, Eddie Kaspbrak, Richie Tozier and Stanley Uris. They band together in It (2017), directed by Andy Muschietti, and the group is the spine of the IT movies. They are a band of outcasts in Derry, Maine, and Ben, Beverly and Mike in particular are bullied by Henry Bowers and his gang, which is a large part of what holds them together. Think of the kid who gets picked last for every team: put seven of them in one room and you have a very stubborn side.

In the first film they are children in the summer after October 1988, when Bill's little brother Georgie is dragged into a storm drain by Pennywise the Dancing Clown. In It Chapter Two (2019) the same seven are called back to Derry 27 years later, in 2016. Bill Skarsgård plays Pennywise in both films. Each child is haunted by a vision shaped around their own fears, and that is how the creature works on them. The comparison with Stephen King's book is covered in it book vs movie.

Bill Denbrough: The Leader Who Will Not Stop SearchingSpoilers

Bill Denbrough is the leader of the Losers Club, played by Jaeden Martell as a boy and James McAvoy as an adult. He is the older brother of Georgie, who vanishes in the opening scene of It (2017) after chasing a paper boat Bill made for him. Bill refuses to accept that Georgie is dead and keeps searching, and that search pulls his friends toward the truth about Pennywise.

In the first film's sewer finale, Pennywise grabs Bill and offers to let the others go if they leave him behind. They refuse and fight together, and afterward Bill finds Georgie's raincoat and accepts that his brother is gone. In It Chapter Two he meets a boy named Dean and cannot save him from the clown. By the end he is writing again, and he reads Stanley's last letter to the group. Full details are on the bill denbrough page.

Beverly Marsh: The One Who Strikes FirstSpoilers

Beverly Marsh is played by Sophia Lillis as a girl and Jessica Chastain as an adult. She is one of the outcasts, with Ben and Mike, who team up with Bill, Richie, Eddie and Stanley after clashes with the bully Henry Bowers. At the Neibolt Street house she drives a spike into its head and forces the creature to retreat.

Pennywise later snatches her, and the boys go back to rescue her. They find her in a trance in the sewers, and Ben's kiss wakes her. In the final fight she stabs It in the face, and after a farewell kiss with Bill she leaves town as summer ends. In It Chapter Two she shows the others visions suggesting they will all die if they break their oath, which is why the group stays. By the end she and Ben are together. More is on the beverly marsh page.

Ben Hanscom: The Outcast Who Gets Hurt at Neibolt StreetSpoilers

Ben Hanscom is played by Jeremy Ray Taylor as a boy and Jay Ryan as an adult. He is one of the outcasts, alongside Beverly and Mike, who join Bill, Richie, Eddie and Stan after clashes with Henry Bowers. The group's research points to an abandoned house on Neibolt Street as the creature's way into the sewers, and Ben is hurt in the encounter there.

He is also the one who wakes Beverly from her trance with a kiss. In It Chapter Two he returns to Derry with Bill, Beverly, Richie and Eddie when Mike makes the call, and the film ends with Ben and Beverly together. Read more at ben hanscom.

Mike Hanlon: The Member Who Never Left DerrySpoilers

Mike Hanlon is played by Chosen Jacobs as a boy and Isaiah Mustafa as an adult, and he is the Loser who never left town. In It (2017) he is one of the outcasts who team up with the group, and when Henry Bowers attacks the friends, Mike pushes him down a well.

In It Chapter Two Mike is the one who phones the others and calls them home to keep their childhood promise. He sends each of them on a separate search for a personal object that will power a ritual he has found. He is fatally wounded in a fight at the library after Richie kills Henry, and at the end Mike leaves Derry. His story continues on the mike hanlon page.

Eddie Kaspbrak: The Wisecracker Who Pays the Highest PriceSpoilers

Eddie Kaspbrak is played by Jack Dylan Grazer as a boy and James Ransone as an adult. He is one of the original friends with Bill, Richie and Stanley, and like every member of the club he is haunted by a nightmare of his own.

In It Chapter Two Eddie returns to Derry with the group, and in the sewers beneath the town he is fatally impaled while saving Richie. His body is left behind when the lair collapses, which makes him the only Loser to die in the final fight. The eddie kaspbrak page has more.

Richie Tozier: The Joker With the Most to LoseSpoilers

Richie Tozier is played by Finn Wolfhard as a boy and Bill Hader as an adult. In It (2017) he is the wisecracking friend who searches for clues about Georgie alongside Bill, Eddie and Stanley.

In It Chapter Two Richie kills Henry Bowers during the fight at the library, and later in the sewers Eddie is fatally impaled while saving him. The Losers then mock the creature until it shrinks and weakens. The rest of his story is on the richie tozier page.

Stanley Uris: The Member Who Does Not Come HomeSpoilers

Stanley Uris is played by Wyatt Oleff as a boy and Andy Bean as an adult. In It (2017) he is one of the original four friends with Bill, Richie and Eddie, and he becomes one of the seven who band together as the Losers Club.

In It Chapter Two Stanley is called back with the others, but he dies by suicide rather than return to Derry. The remaining Losers learn of it at their reunion dinner. Stanley leaves a last letter, and it closes with the line that they are Losers and always will be. More is on the stanley uris page.

How Did the Losers Defeat It?Spoilers

The Losers defeat It twice: they wound and drive it back as children in It (2017), then kill it as adults in It Chapter Two. In the first film they work out that the creature wakes about every 27 years to feed on Derry's children. They fight together in the sewers, Beverly stabs It in the face, and the creature falls away weakened. They believe they have bought Derry some time, and they swear a blood oath to return if it ever comes back.

In It Chapter Two they keep that oath. Mike sets them on separate searches for personal objects to power a ritual, and each is haunted by Pennywise and by memories they had forgotten. Once the memories return, they go into the sewers beneath Derry, where Pennywise takes a huge spider-like form and tries to break them with their worst fears. They mock the creature until it shrinks and weakens, then crush its heart. It dies, the cavern collapses, and the scars on their hands fade.

The Losers Club Explained: Why Pennywise Fears ThemSpoilers

Pennywise fears the Losers because they refuse to be separated, and in my opinion that is the cleanest answer the films give. In the 2017 sewer scene the clown grabs Bill and offers to let the others go if they leave him behind. A monster that feeds on fear needs its victims alone, so the offer reads as its last tactic. The kids say no, fight together and wound it, and the creature retreats. It could be argued that this single choice is the real victory of the first film, more than any blow landed.

Chapter Two changes the weapon. The adults do not simply stab the creature: they mock it until it shrinks and weakens, and then they crush its heart. In my opinion this is the more interesting idea, because it treats fear as something that can be made small by ridicule, which suits a group built around a wisecracker like Richie. The structure backs it up: the first film ends with a promise, and the second ends when that promise is kept. The oath matters because the 27 year cycle breaks only when the Losers return, and Stanley is the one who cannot.

That being said, the sequel pays a heavy price for its ending, since Eddie dies saving Richie and the circle closes one member short. If you are new to the saga, start with it 2017, then watch it chapter two, and use it movies in order to plan the viewing. The it movies hub is the best entry point for the whole series.
