Luke Castellan is the older Camp Half-Blood camper who betrays Percy Jackson, and Jake Abel plays him in both Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013). He is the human villain behind the stolen lightning bolt and the poisoned tree.

Who Is Luke Castellan in Percy Jackson?
Luke Castellan is the older student at Camp Half-Blood who gives Percy Jackson supplies for his quest and then turns out to be the villain working against the gods. Jake Abel plays him in Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief (2010), directed by Chris Columbus, and again in Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters (2013), directed by Thor Freudenthal. Abel is billed fourth in the first film and sixth in the second, so Luke moves from a supporting camper to the chief human threat in the story.
So, who is Luke supposed to be? Think of him as the senior everyone at school trusts, the one who hands you a tip sheet before the big exam. That is how the first film introduces him: he gives Percy, Grover and Annabeth supplies for their trip, and nothing about the gift looks suspicious. The reveal that those supplies were part of a plan is what turns him from helper into enemy.
Luke sits at the center of the Percy Jackson movies, and his story is built around one goal, overthrowing the gods. Readers who want the full cast can browse the Percy Jackson characters page, or see Percy Jackson cast for the actors across both films.

Luke Castellan's Story Across the FilmsSpoilers
Luke's arc runs from helpful camper to open enemy over two films, and in both he is behind the central crisis. In Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his master lightning bolt, and Percy sets out to bring it back and rescue his mother Sally from the Underworld. Luke gives the group supplies, including a shield. When the party reaches the Underworld, the bolt turns up inside that shield, which proves Luke was the thief all along.
The film then sends Percy and Annabeth to Olympus through the Empire State Building. Luke ambushes them there and explains his plan to overthrow the gods. Percy beats him in a fight across Manhattan and returns the bolt to Zeus, which stops a war among the gods.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters picks up with Luke as an established enemy. His poison is killing Thalia's tree, the tree that shields Camp Half-Blood, and the camp's barrier is failing. Annabeth works out that the Golden Fleece could heal the tree, and the quest to find it takes Percy, Annabeth, Grover and Tyson across the sea. Luke's allies kidnap Grover, and Luke holds the group prisoner on his yacht, the Andromeda, until they escape. Later the group finds the Fleece with the cyclops Polyphemus, but Luke ambushes them and takes it. Percy defeats Luke and then Kronos, locking the Titan away again.
The second film also gives the tree a history. Seven years before the story, Thalia Grace sacrifices herself to save her friends, and Zeus turns her into the tree that Luke later poisons.
Luke Castellan's Relationships With Percy, Annabeth, Thalia and Hermes
Luke's relationships explain why his betrayal stings, because each of them begins in trust. With Percy, he starts as a friendly older camper and ends as the opponent Percy must beat twice, once in Manhattan and again in Sea of Monsters. Percy Jackson, the lead of the saga, is covered on the Percy Jackson character page.
Annabeth Chase travels on the quest in The Lightning Thief and again in Sea of Monsters, where she works out how the Golden Fleece could save the camp. You can read more about her on the Annabeth Chase page, and about Grover on the Grover Percy Jackson page, since Luke's allies kidnap him in the second film.
Thalia Grace is tied to Luke through the tree. In the backstory of Sea of Monsters, Zeus turns her into a tree whose magic shields the camp, and Luke's poison attacks that tree directly. Did Luke Castellan love Thalia? The plots of the two films do not describe a romance between them, so the link is the tree and what happens to it.
Hermes, played by Nathan Fillion in Sea of Monsters, helps the group find Luke's yacht. Others around Luke in the story include Chiron, covered on the Chiron Percy Jackson page, and Clarisse, who leads the Fleece quest and is on the Clarisse Percy Jackson page. For the gods in the wider story, see Percy Jackson gods.
What Happened to Luke Castellan? Does He Die?Spoilers
Percy Jackson defeats Luke Castellan in both films, and neither film's plot describes Luke dying. In The Lightning Thief, Percy beats him in a fight across Manhattan and returns the bolt to Zeus. In Sea of Monsters, Percy defeats Luke and then Kronos, and the Titan is locked away again. The second film ends with Clarisse placing the Golden Fleece on Thalia's tree, which restores the barrier and brings Thalia back to life, and with Percy wondering whether the great prophecy refers to Thalia rather than to him.
So, what happened to Luke Castellan after the second film? Nothing more was filmed, because a third Percy Jackson film was never made. The story continued instead as the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a television adaptation rather than a film. Disney announced that season 3, based on The Titan's Curse, premieres on November 20, 2026.

Luke Castellan's Best Moments (Opinion)
In my opinion, Luke's best scenes are the ones that reward a second viewing, because you can see the betrayal sitting in plain sight. The first is the supply gift in The Lightning Thief. When Luke hands over the shield, it reads as camp hospitality, and only later, in the Underworld, does the audience learn the stolen bolt was inside it. It is a neat piece of plotting, and it makes the thief hard to guess on a first watch.
The second is the Empire State Building ambush. Luke explains his plan to overthrow the gods calmly, as if it were a reasonable position, and perhaps that restraint works better than shouting would have. The fight that follows across Manhattan gives the first film its biggest set piece.
The third is the Andromeda captivity in Sea of Monsters. It is the film's strongest sequence for Luke, because Percy and Annabeth are prisoners of someone they once trusted, and the escape ends with the group being swallowed by Charybdis. It could be argued that Sea of Monsters gives Luke a more direct role than the first film does, since he is now a known enemy. If I had to pick one scene to show a newcomer, it would be the shield reveal, since it explains the whole character in a single object.
