Rick Riordan's books contain a much larger cast, so the films work with a trimmed version of it. Percy Jackson, played by Logan Lerman in both films, is a teenager with dyslexia and ADHD who lives with his mother Sally and her unpleasant boyfriend Gabe. Thalia Grace is the demigod whose sacrifice, seven years before the story of the second film, turned her into the pine tree that protects the camp. Paloma Kwiatkowski plays Thalia and Katelyn Mager plays Young Thalia. Chris Rodriguez, played by Grey Damon, is a further camper who appears in the sequel.

Catherine Keener plays Sally Jackson and Joe Pantoliano plays Gabe Ugliano, the two figures at the center of Percy's ordinary life. Uma Thurman plays Medusa. In Sea of Monsters, Robert Maillet and Ron Perlman share the role of the cyclops Polyphemus, one as the physical performer and the other as the voice. The boys of the films are Percy, Grover, Luke, Tyson and Chris Rodriguez. As for love interests, neither film is built around a romance: both stories follow quests, rescues and the fight against Luke, with Percy and Annabeth traveling together through each.

The cast shifts more between the films than the matching posters suggest, and it could be argued that the shift tells you what each film cares about. The first film spends its star power on the adults: Sean Bean as Zeus, Steve Coogan as Hades, Rosario Dawson as Persephone and Uma Thurman as Medusa each get a single set piece or scene. The sequel trades those gods for a younger, camp centered ensemble, with Hermes and Mr. D as the main divine presences and Clarisse and Tyson doing the heavy lifting.

Luke is the useful thread. He is the only supporting character who appears in both films, and his job changes: in The Lightning Thief he sends Percy, Annabeth and Grover off with supplies for the trip, while in Sea of Monsters the poison in Thalia's tree is the problem that starts the whole quest. Perhaps that is why he lands on the main character list even though he has far fewer scenes than Annabeth.

The Chiron recast is the other visible seam. Pierce Brosnan plays Mr. Brunner and Chiron as one dual role, so the first film uses the teacher at the museum as the reveal that Percy's world is bigger than he thought. Anthony Stewart Head is credited simply as Chiron in the sequel, and Stanley Tucci's Mr. D is the one who sidelines Percy by giving Clarisse the quest. As for the production context, Thor Freudenthal was hired in June 2011 to replace Chris Columbus, who stayed on as a producer, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Lerman, Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson and Abel all returned, which is why the central friendship feels continuous even as the supporting roles turn over. A good rule of thumb for parents: if your child loved Annabeth and Grover in the first film, the second gives them more of the same trio, plus Tyson as the new addition.

The films and the Disney+ series are separate adaptations of Riordan's novels. The television series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, is not a film.
