Koba Planet of the Apes: Actor, Motives and Death

Koba in Planet of the Apes is the ape lieutenant who turns on Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), directed by Matt Reeves, and he is played by Toby Kebbell. Christopher Gordon is credited as Koba in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), and Kebbell returns for War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Koba belongs only to the modern run of films, so he is absent from the five original films and from Planet of the Apes (2001).

Who Is Koba in Planet of the Apes?

Koba is an ape of Caesar's colony and, in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar's lieutenant, the ape who distrusts every human he meets. He is first credited in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), directed by Rupert Wyatt, and becomes a central character in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), directed by Matt Reeves.

What kind of ape is he? The credits give only the name "Koba", and he is one of the apes who follow Caesar. Toby Kebbell plays him in Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), and Christopher Gordon is credited in Rise.

His distrust has a source that the story states plainly: Koba was tortured in a human lab. That history explains why he reads the arrival of Malcolm's group as a threat rather than an opportunity, and it is the thread the whole of Dawn pulls on. Koba's Story Arc Across Rise, Dawn and WarSpoilers

Koba's arc is a gradual turn from suspicion to open rebellion, and almost all of it plays out in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). Before that, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) lists him among the apes who gather around Caesar (Christopher Gordon is billed tenth), so he belongs to Caesar's following well before the move into the woods.

When Dawn opens, a decade has passed since the Simian Flu pandemic, and Caesar's settlement outside San Francisco is thriving. Human survivors under Malcolm ask to repair a dam that could power their city, and Caesar agrees on the condition that no guns enter the forest. Koba never softens toward the visitors. Even Ellie's care for Caesar's sick mate does not change his mind, which sets him apart from a colony that is slowly warming to the newcomers.

His grievance hardens when he discovers that Dreyfus has been supplying the survivors with weapons from an old armory. He asks Caesar to attack before the humans are ready, is refused, and takes a beating for it. Rather than accept that verdict, he turns to deceit: he picks up a rifle, wounds Caesar at a gathering of the apes, and tells the colony that humans did it. That lie lets him march the apes on the city and assume command, while the apes who will not follow him are locked away.

The arc closes at the tower, covered in the fate section. Toby Kebbell is credited as Koba again in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), billed ninth, although that film belongs to Caesar and the Colonel.

Koba and Caesar: The Relationships That Define Him

Koba's defining relationship is with Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, and it is the reason the question "why did Koba shoot Caesar" has an answer beyond simple greed. Caesar wants coexistence and Koba wants safety through strength, so the argument over the armory is an argument over what the apes owe the humans who hurt them. Caesar answers with mercy and Koba answers with a rifle.

With the humans, his relationships are all one note. He distrusts Malcolm and Ellie even after Ellie treats Caesar's sick mate, and when he finds Dreyfus' armory he uses it to argue for a first strike.

Among the apes, those who stay loyal to Caesar are imprisoned once Koba takes over. Caesar later returns, frees the prisoners and rejoins his son, Blue Eyes. For more on the leader he betrays, see Caesar and Maurice.

There is also a comparison with the original films. In Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), the gorilla general Aldo seizes power in a coup and breaks the apes' most sacred law by killing another ape. Koba's coup in Dawn echoes that pattern, though the modern film gives its rebel a personal wound that Aldo's story does not.

How Does Koba Die in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes?Spoilers

Koba dies in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when Caesar defeats him at the top of the human tower and lets him fall. Caesar first declares that Koba is no longer an ape, which carries the weight of the law the apes live by, and then lets go.

The fight comes after Caesar returns, frees the imprisoned apes and rejoins his son Blue Eyes. At the tower, Dreyfus has rigged explosives and dies in the blast, while Koba is left alone against the leader he tried to kill. Malcolm then warns that the human military is coming, and Caesar sends him away to safety and prepares his apes for war.

So, was Koba stronger than Caesar? On the evidence of the film, no. Caesar beats him in the armory scene and again at the tower, and Koba gains the upper hand only once, by surprise, when he shoots Caesar at the gathering with a stolen rifle.

After his death, the character is still credited in War for the Planet of the Apes, played again by Toby Kebbell. That film turns on Caesar, the Colonel and the search for a new refuge.

Koba's Best Moments, and Whether He Is Broken or Pure Evil

In my opinion, Koba is best read as a broken character who chooses a terrible path, rather than a pure villain, and the film seems to want the audience to hold both ideas. The torture in a human lab explains his fear, but it does not excuse the shooting or the imprisonment of loyal apes. Perhaps that is why he works as an antagonist: the story takes his grievance seriously and still sides firmly with Caesar.

The armory confrontation is the scene I would point newcomers to first. Koba's argument is practical and Caesar's refusal is moral, and the beating that follows shows the first crack between the two apes. It sets up the shooting at the gathering, where the lie that the humans did it turns private resentment into public war.

The tower finale is the other essential scene. It is a fight between two apes in a human building already rigged to explode, and Caesar's declaration that Koba is no longer an ape recalls Battle for the Planet of the Apes, where killing another ape is the unforgivable act. Caesar lets him fall rather than finishing him in a rage, and I think that restraint is what keeps Caesar the hero.

If you want the larger picture, the planet of the apes timeline places Dawn between Rise and War, and the planet of the apes original vs reboot page compares Koba's coup with the older films.
