Caesar Planet of the Apes: Who He Is, Who Plays Him and How He Dies

Caesar in Planet of the Apes is a talking chimpanzee who leads the apes against human rule. Roddy McDowall plays him in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), and Andy Serkis plays him through motion capture in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). The two versions are separate characters in separate timelines, and only the modern Caesar dies on screen, at the end of War for the Planet of the Apes.

Who Plays Caesar?

Caesar Planet of the Apes Actor: Roddy McDowall and Andy Serkis

Roddy McDowall plays Caesar in the original films and Andy Serkis plays him in the modern trilogy, so the same chimpanzee leader belongs to two separate continuities. McDowall appears in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972, directed by J. Lee Thompson) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973, also directed by J. Lee Thompson), where Caesar is the talking son of Cornelius and Zira. Serkis plays the modern Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011, directed by Rupert Wyatt), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014, directed by Matt Reeves) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017, also directed by Matt Reeves).

Is there a voice actor for Caesar? Not in the usual sense, because Serkis performs the character on set through motion capture and Weta builds the digital chimpanzee from that performance. Caesar is also a chimpanzee, not a gorilla, which is a common mix up.

The name has its own history. In the original series the infant ape that Zira hides in Escape from the Planet of the Apes is called Milo, and in Conquest he uses the name Caesar only in secret. In the modern films Will Rodman raises him and names him Caesar. He does not appear in Planet of the Apes (2001), directed by Tim Burton, and he died generations before Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, directed by Wes Ball).

Caesar's Story Arc Across Both TimelinesSpoilers

In both timelines Caesar moves from a hidden, protected ape to the leader of an ape society, and the two routes could hardly be more different in tone.

In the original run, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes opens in 1991, when apes serve humans as slaves. Caesar is hidden by his guardian Armando, and after Armando dies in custody Caesar is sold at auction and ends up in the household of Governor Breck. He watches how apes are beaten and trained, starts to organize them, survives capture and torture, and leads the uprising through the city. At the climax he holds Breck at gunpoint, and in the released cut he spares him after Lisa and MacDonald urge mercy. In Battle for the Planet of the Apes he rules a settlement where apes and humans live side by side. He travels to the ruined Forbidden City to find recordings of his parents, then has to defeat Aldo's coup and the mutant army under Governor Kolp. He ends the film accepting that apes and humans must share the land as equals.

The modern arc is longer and darker. In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Will Rodman takes the newborn Caesar home after his mother, Bright Eyes, is killed in the Gen-Sys lab. Caesar learns sign language, bonds with Will and with Will's father Charles, and is sent to an ape shelter after he hurts a neighbor who attacks Charles. There he wins the respect of the other apes, steals the gas that raises their intelligence, speaks aloud for the first time when he defends himself against Dodge, and leads the break out to the Golden Gate Bridge and the redwood forest.

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, ten years later, Caesar leads a settlement outside San Francisco and tries to keep a fragile peace with Malcolm's group of human survivors. In War for the Planet of the Apes, Alpha-Omega soldiers under the Colonel attack his colony, and Caesar sets out with Maurice, Rocket and Luca to track the Colonel down. He is captured and tortured, learns that a mutated virus is stripping humans of speech, and takes a stand that is as much about mercy as revenge.

Caesar's Allies, Family and Rivals

Caesar's closest ties are the apes who follow him and the humans who raised or spared him, and they differ between the two timelines.

In the original films, his parents are the chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira, so the answer to whether Cornelius is related to Caesar is yes: Cornelius is his father. In Conquest the key human figures are Armando, who hides him, MacDonald, who comes to suspect what he is, and Lisa, who urges mercy. Breck and the security chief Kolp are his enemies, and in Battle Kolp returns as the governor of the mutants. Aldo, the gorilla general, is the rival inside his own community, and Caesar's son Cornelius is killed in Aldo's coup.

In the modern films the name Cornelius returns, this time for a son of Caesar, alongside Blue Eyes as another son, and Caesar has a mate who falls sick in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Will Rodman (James Franco) and Charles Rodman (John Lithgow) are the family that raises him in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. His oldest friend is the orangutan Maurice, who stays with him from the ape shelter to the last scene of War for the Planet of the Apes, where Rocket and Luca also ride out with him to find the Colonel.

Who wins, Koba or Caesar? Caesar does. Koba, who was tortured in a human lab, is his lieutenant in Dawn, distrusts every human, shoots Caesar and takes over, and Caesar beats him at the top of the tower and lets him fall. Bad Ape and Nova, the mute girl Maurice names, join Caesar in War. Nova there is a separate character from the Nova of Planet of the Apes (1968).

How Caesar Dies in Planet of the ApesSpoilers

The modern Caesar dies at the end of War for the Planet of the Apes, while the original Caesar is still alive when his series ends.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar is wounded by a crossbow bolt during the chaos at the prison camp. He still sets off a fuel tank, and the explosion triggers an avalanche that buries the attacking soldiers. The Colonel, already sick, ends his own life rather than die at Caesar's hand. The surviving apes and Nova reach the new refuge, and Caesar dies there from the wound, sharing a quiet last moment with Maurice. Maurice promises that Caesar's son Cornelius will learn what his father did, and the apes begin a new life.

In the original series, Battle for the Planet of the Apes ends with Aldo dead, the mutant attack beaten back and Caesar deciding that apes and humans must live together as equals, though the apes keep their weapons. The film closes 600 years later, with the Lawgiver telling the story to a mixed group of human and ape children. Caesar's death is not shown.

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, generations after Caesar's death, the orangutan Raka teaches Noa Caesar's original ideas, while the ape Proximus Caesar rules a coastal kingdom and enslaves other clans. The two characters share a name but not an outlook, and Proximus Caesar has his own page. Noa is the young chimpanzee who carries the story forward.

Caesar's Best Moments and Is He Good?

In my opinion, the modern Caesar is a good leader who is constantly tempted to be a harsh one, and that tension is the strength of the character. He refuses Koba's call to strike first, he lets the Colonel take his own life, and he still carries real anger. The original Caesar is more of a liberator, and his choice to spare Breck in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is closer to a moral speech than to a personal struggle.

My pick for the best single moment is the first time he speaks aloud in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, when he defends himself against Dodge. It lands because the film has spent so long building a silent, signing Caesar that the voice feels earned. Close behind is the Golden Gate Bridge battle, where Buck gives his life to bring down a helicopter and Caesar's leadership is tested in action for the first time.

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the best moment is the fight at the top of the tower. It could be argued that the real drama is the refusal just before it, when Caesar declares Koba no longer an ape. In War for the Planet of the Apes, the quietest scene is the strongest: Caesar's last exchange with Maurice at the refuge has none of the set piece scale of the camp breakout, yet it is where the trilogy finishes the story it began.

If you want the older Caesar, start with the riot and the spared Breck in Conquest. For the newer one, begin at Rise of the Planet of the Apes and follow the Planet of the Apes movies in order guide.
