Austin Powers in Goldmember Plot: What Is the Setup?

Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), directed by Jay Roach, sends the British spy back to 1975 to find his kidnapped father. In 2002 the villain Dr. Evil is working on a new scheme to travel back to 1975, where he plans to team up with Goldmember, a Dutch criminal obsessed with gold, and use a tractor beam to pull a meteor toward Earth. Austin Powers helps capture Dr. Evil, then learns that his father, the spy Nigel Powers, has been kidnapped.

Dr. Evil reveals from custody that Goldmember is behind it, so Austin travels back to 1975 to find his father. There he teams up with a former flame, the disco era agent Foxxy Cleopatra.

The film is the third entry in the saga, which is why it is also searched as Austin Powers 3. It follows Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) and The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), and the series keeps one continuous story, so the Austin Powers movies in order are the same in release order and chronological order. If you are new to the series, the full run is laid out on the Austin Powers movies hub.

What Songs Are in Austin Powers in Goldmember?

George S. Clinton composed the score for Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), and the album "Austin Powers in Goldmember: Music From & Inspired by the Motion Picture" came out on the Maverick label on July 16, 2002, with 12 tracks. The film is a musical parody as much as a spy spoof, so its two featured songs both land as set pieces.

The one written for the film is "Hey Goldmember", credited to Foxxy Cleopatra, Devin Vasquez and Solange. It plays when Foxxy Cleopatra performs the disco medley at the Studio 69 nightclub, which suits the 1975 setting the story visits.

The second is a comedy remix. In a prison scene, Dr. Evil and Mini-Me perform a rap video style parody of "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) (Dr. Evil Remix)". In my opinion, it is the film's best example of the series turning a pop trend into a character gag.

  • "Hey Goldmember" by Foxxy Cleopatra, Devin Vasquez and Solange
  • "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) (Dr. Evil Remix)" by Dr. Evil

For the music across all three films, see the Austin Powers soundtrack page.

Austin Powers in Goldmember Full Plot SummarySpoilers

The full story of Goldmember runs from the capture of Dr. Evil in 2002, through a rescue attempt in 1975, to a chase in Tokyo and a final fight over a tractor beam. Austin Powers helps capture Dr. Evil at the start, which is when he learns that his father Nigel has been kidnapped. Dr. Evil, held in custody, names Goldmember as the culprit, and Austin goes back to 1975 to search.

In 1975 Austin meets Foxxy Cleopatra, but he fails to free Nigel, and Goldmember takes Nigel forward to 2002. The chase then moves to Tokyo, where the command unit for the tractor beam is being moved. Along the way Dr. Evil's son Scott kills one of the villain's associates, and Mini-Me switches sides to help Austin.

Austin, Foxxy and Mini-Me then sneak onto Dr. Evil's submarine, which is the film's main infiltration set piece. Nigel reveals that Austin and Dr. Evil are brothers and that Dr. Evil's real name is Doug. Goldmember starts the beam, but Austin and Doug work together to reverse its polarity, which destroys the meteor, and Goldmember is arrested.

The events are later turned into a film within the film, and a bald Scott closes the story by vowing revenge.

Release Dates, Opening and Box Office

Austin Powers in Goldmember opened in US theaters on July 26, 2002, the same date it opened in the UK, with Australia following on September 19, 2002. The US date matches the plan New Line set out in September 2001, about ten months before release. Box Office Mojo lists the UK and Australian dates, and those two are reported rather than studio confirmed.

No premiere date, city or venue for Goldmember has been published in studio or trade coverage, so the opening dates above are the firm anchors for the film's debut.

The release came just over three years after The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). According to Box Office Mojo, Goldmember grossed $213 million domestically and $84 million internationally, for $297 million worldwide on a $63 million budget. The Numbers reports slightly different grosses. The Austin Powers box office page compares all three films.

Austin Powers in Goldmember Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Austin Powers in Goldmember resolves the meteor plot by making Austin and Dr. Evil, who turn out to be brothers, reverse the tractor beam together. Goldmember starts the beam, Austin and Doug (Dr. Evil's real name) reverse its polarity, the meteor is destroyed, and Goldmember is arrested.

The story is then shown being adapted into a movie, and Austin and Foxxy kiss after a screening of it. Scott, now bald, vows revenge. During the end credits, Mini-Me is shown talking with Britney Spears. That is an end credits moment, and no separate post credits scene has been verified.

Why does the brother reveal matter? In my opinion, it is the smartest structural move in the film, because it turns a rivalry that began in 1967 into a family argument. Nigel Powers is the kidnapped father the whole 1975 chase is about, and Dr. Evil spends the series at odds with his own son Scott, who wants nothing to do with him in the first film. Making the hero and the villain share a father lines those threads up, and the team up to reverse the beam is the payoff.

The film within the film is a Bond style joke, since the saga parodies the James Bond films. It could be argued that it is also a neat way to say the story is over. Scott's vow, meanwhile, perhaps leaves one thread open, and the status of any fourth film is covered on the Austin Powers 4 page.

Where Was Austin Powers in Goldmember Filmed?

New Line's September 2001 announcement gave a mid November 2001 start of production for Austin Powers in Goldmember, but it did not name any shooting locations, and no verified list of real filming locations has been published by the studio or the trades.

The story locations are a different matter. The film moves between 2002 and 1975, runs a chase through Tokyo, where the command unit for the tractor beam is being moved, and ends with a fight aboard Dr. Evil's submarine. Those are settings in the plot, not confirmed shooting sites.

Austin Powers in Goldmember Trivia

The best known piece of Goldmember trivia is the fight over its name. Here are the facts that are on the record:

  • In September 2001, New Line announced Jay Roach as director and Michael McCullers as writer, with John Lyons and Eric McLeod producing, a mid November 2001 start of production and a US release date of July 26, 2002.
  • In January 2002, the MPAA ruled the word Goldmember not allowable in the title after MGM and Danjaq objected that it played on Goldfinger. New Line pulled promotional material that used the title.
  • The dispute was later settled with the title kept, reportedly in exchange for MGM trailers such as Die Another Day being attached to screenings.
  • Mike Myers plays four roles: Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Goldmember and Fat Bastard.
  • Michael Caine plays Austin's father Nigel Powers, and Beyoncé plays the new Powers girl Foxxy Cleopatra.
  • Britney Spears, Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Tom Cruise are among the cameo appearances in the credited cast.

The title fight shows how close the saga sits to the franchise it spoofs. For more on that, see Austin Powers Bond parody.
