Avatar Box Office Worldwide: Totals for All Three Films

The three Avatar films have grossed about $6.74 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, from combined budgets of about $1.1 billion. The table sets each film's budget and gross side by side in US dollars, using Box Office Mojo figures.

FilmBudgetDomesticInternationalWorldwide

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)$460 million$688.5 million$1.65 billionMore than $2.3 billion
Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)$400 million$404.3 million$1.08 billion$1.49 billion
Series total$1.1 billion$6.74 billion

Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron, is the biggest earner of the three at $2.92 billion worldwide, made up of $785.2 million domestic and $2.14 billion international. It opened in the US on December 18, 2009 (The Numbers) on a $237 million budget. The Numbers lists a worldwide gross within a few thousand dollars of Box Office Mojo, so the two sites agree on the figure. You can read the full story of that release on the Avatar 2009 film page.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), also directed by Cameron, reached more than $2.3 billion worldwide: Box Office Mojo puts it at $2.33 billion, while The Numbers shows $2.32 billion. It took $688.5 million domestic and $1.65 billion international, and its $460 million budget is the largest of the three. It opened in the US on December 16, 2022 and runs 192 minutes.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), the third film, stands at $1.49 billion worldwide, with $404.3 million domestic and $1.08 billion international. Box Office Mojo lists a $400 million budget. The film opened on December 19, 2025 and runs 198 minutes (3 hours 18 minutes), a length that Variety's opening weekend report linked to the number of showtimes theaters could offer.

Has Any Movie Made $2 Billion?

Yes, and two Avatar films have done it: Avatar (2009) at $2.92 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water at more than $2.3 billion. Fire and Ash is the third Avatar film and sits at $1.49 billion, below that line.

What Is the Highest Grossing Avatar Film?

Avatar (2009) is the highest grossing Avatar film, and at $2.92 billion it is the figure each later release is measured against. The Way of Water sits roughly 20 percent below it, and Fire and Ash roughly 49 percent below it. For the order in which to watch them, see Avatar movies in order, and for the full list of releases see how many Avatar movies are there.

Avatar Box Office and Budget: Is the Series Still a Hit?

The Avatar series is a hit on every measure the budget figures allow, although each film has earned less than the one before it, and that trend matters for what comes next. The opinions here are mine.

How Is Avatar So High Grossing?

Avatar is an international franchise first and a domestic one second. International ticket sales made up about 73 percent of Avatar (2009), about 71 percent of Avatar: The Way of Water and about 73 percent of Avatar: Fire and Ash, so the split has barely moved across sixteen years. It could be argued that this steadiness is the real story, because it suggests an audience that is not tied to one market or one release window.

Two other habits are visible in the release dates. All three films opened in the US the weekend before Christmas (December 18, 2009, December 16, 2022 and December 19, 2025), which gives each one a long holiday run. And, all three were directed by James Cameron, with long running times of 162, 192 and 198 minutes, so each film is sold as an event rather than as a routine sequel. In my opinion, that event positioning explains more of the totals than any single technical feature.

How Do the Budgets Compare With the Grosses?

Avatar (2009) grossed roughly 12 times its $237 million budget, The Way of Water roughly 5 times its $460 million budget, and Fire and Ash roughly 3.7 times its $400 million budget. Those multiples fall with every film, and they are not profit, because a production budget is not the whole cost of a release (marketing and distribution sit on top). Even so, the direction is plain: the films have become more expensive and less lucrative per dollar spent.

Was Avatar: Fire and Ash a Hit or a Flop?

In my opinion, Fire and Ash is a hit by any ordinary standard and a step down only when it is set beside its predecessors. Its $1.49 billion worldwide is about 36 percent lower than The Way of Water's total, which is a steeper fall than the roughly 20 percent drop between the first two films. But, a gross of that size on a $400 million budget is not the profile of a flop. Perhaps the fairest description is that the film proved the audience is still there while showing that the extraordinary first two results will be hard to repeat.

What Do the Numbers Mean for Avatar 4?

Avatar 4 is dated December 21, 2029 on Disney's release schedule, a date reported by WION in March 2026 rather than confirmed by the studio. TheWrap reported in April 2026 that the date was tentative and that Cameron had not decided whether to go ahead, and Avatar 5 is dated December 19, 2031. The earnings of Fire and Ash are the obvious input to that decision, so these totals are the figures to watch when news arrives. The latest status, with every source and its confidence level, is on the Avatar 4 page, and the Avatar movies ranked page shows where each film lands creatively against these results.
