Avatar (2009) Plot: What Is the Film About?

Avatar (2009), written and directed by James Cameron, starts in 2154 with a corporation stripping a faraway moon for profit and a wounded veteran caught in the middle. Earth's resources are running out, and the RDA mines a valuable mineral on Pandora, where the blue Na'vi people live.

The man at the center is Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine who steps into the avatar program because his twin brother has died (the program lets humans control Na'vi bodied avatars, a little like wearing a remote controlled body from the inside). Wildlife attacks him in the forest, and a Na'vi woman, Neytiri, saves him and brings him to her clan, the Omaticaya. Colonel Quaritch then quietly asks Jake to gather intelligence on the clan, with a promise to restore his legs as payment. Meanwhile, Jake learns Na'vi ways and begins to fall in love with Neytiri.

Avatar (2009) Soundtrack and Score: What Songs Are in the Film?

James Horner composed the score for Avatar (2009), released as the album "Avatar: Music From the Motion Picture" on the Atlantic label on December 11, 2009. The album runs to 14 tracks and collects his music for the film directed by James Cameron.

Horner is credited for the score alone, so the music that accompanies the story from start to finish sits with him, while the featured song is a separate piece. That song is "I See You (Theme from Avatar)" by Leona Lewis, and it was written for the film. It plays over the closing credits, after the story has ended, which makes it a send off for the audience rather than a cue inside a scene.

So, what songs are in Avatar (2009)? The answer is short, because the film has one featured song and it waits until the very end:

  • "I See You (Theme from Avatar)" by Leona Lewis

If you want the music that underpins the film itself, the score album is the place to start, since it is the work of the film's sole credited composer and it is the release that carries the film's name. The song is best treated as a companion piece to that score, and it is worth staying in your seat for it if you like to hear a film out to the final credit.

Track lists for every film in the saga are collected on the avatar soundtrack page.

Avatar 2009 Full Plot SummarySpoilers

The full story of Avatar 2009 follows Jake from informant to war leader, and it contains spoilers from here on. The RDA wants the unobtanium under the Omaticaya's home, and Quaritch's price for Jake's legs is the location of Hometree, the giant tree that clan lives in.

As Jake grows closer to Neytiri and respects the Na'vi, he sabotages a bulldozer, and administrator Parker Selfridge responds by ordering Hometree destroyed. Jake confesses what he has done, and he and Dr. Grace Augustine are captured. The assault brings Hometree down and kills Neytiri's father, Eytukan.

Trudy Chacon breaks Jake, Grace and Norm out, though Grace is fatally wounded in the escape. Jake then bonds with Toruk, the great flying creature, and uses that standing to unite the clans against the RDA. At the Tree of Souls the wildlife of Pandora joins the battle. Quaritch exposes Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere, but Neytiri kills Quaritch and saves Jake, and the RDA is driven off Pandora.

Avatar 2009 Premiere and Release Date

Avatar 2009 had its world premiere in London on December 10, 2009, at the Odeon Leicester Square, eight days before it reached US theaters. The US and UK release date was December 18, 2009, and Australian theaters opened a day earlier, on December 17, 2009.

The film runs 162 minutes, which is shorter than both sequels: avatar the way of water runs 192 minutes and avatar fire and ash runs 198 minutes. It is certified PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia. Anyone placing it among the other films can see the full sequence in avatar movies in order, where it is first in both release order and chronological order.

Avatar 2009 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Avatar (2009) settles the war on Pandora and Jake's identity at once: the RDA is driven off the moon, and Jake becomes Na'vi for good. It reveals the end of the film and the opening of the sequels, and the reading below is my opinion.

After the battle at the Tree of Souls, the surviving humans are expelled from Pandora. In a ritual at the Tree of Souls, Jake's mind is permanently moved into his avatar body, and he starts a new life among the Na'vi with Neytiri. Why does that matter? Because the film has been building toward it since Quaritch's bargain: the colonel offers to restore Jake's legs in return for the location of Hometree, and the ending gives Jake a body that works without any help from the RDA. It could be argued that the transfer completes a choice Jake began when he sabotaged the bulldozer, and that the earlier betrayal, Jake's confession and the loss of Hometree and Eytukan, is what he pays for it.

The order of the final act is worth following closely. Grace is fatally wounded in the escape that Trudy makes possible, Jake bonds with Toruk to unite the clans, and the wildlife of Pandora joins the fight at the Tree of Souls. Quaritch then exposes Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere, and it is Neytiri, not Jake, who kills Quaritch and saves him. In my opinion, that choice is the film's cleverest piece of staging: the human who arrived as an outsider is rescued by the people he betrayed and then joined.

The film resolves the fight but not the larger problem. The Na'vi are free, yet Earth's interest in Pandora remains unresolved, and the sequels pick that thread up. Avatar the way of water opens sixteen years later with Jake leading the Omatikaya and a revived Colonel Quaritch returning as a recombinant, a Na'vi body carrying the memories of a dead soldier. That is a notable retcon of sorts for the character, since the first film ends with Neytiri killing him. Avatar fire and ash then follows a Sully family grieving Neteyam and facing Varang's clan, which shows how far the saga has moved from the clean good against bad split of 2009.

I would say the 2009 ending is a closed story with an open door, and that explains why the saga could continue toward avatar 4. For where this sits in the wider story, see the avatar timeline.
