Varang in Avatar: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her

Varang is the leader of the Mangkwan, a Na'vi clan known as the Ash People, and she is introduced in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), directed by James Cameron. Oona Chaplin is credited in the role, fifth in the billing after Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.

Her people first appear in the convoy attack. At the start of the film the Sullys are grieving Neteyam among the Metkayina, and they decide to send Spider toward the human science camp on a convoy of Wind Trader ships. Varang's people ambush that convoy, burn the ships and scatter the family. That attack puts the Sullys into the Ash People's path, and it is why she matters to the whole third act.

Her link to Colonel Miles Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang, is the one that defines her. Quaritch is the recombinant copy of the dead colonel from Avatar (2009), revived in Avatar: The Way of Water, and in the third film he wins Varang's trust and, together with the Mangkwan, turns the final battle.

Her link to Kiri runs the other way. Kiri, the Sullys' adopted daughter, is the one who stops Varang from killing Neytiri at the climax, after she finally reaches Eywa. That answers the question of what Kiri did to Varang: she halted the killing blow rather than defeating her clan outright. Kiri's own story has its own page, and so does Neytiri's.

Varang's quarrel with the family also touches Jake Sully, who is forced to surrender at the Metkayina village after Quaritch leads the Mangkwan there, and Spider, whom Quaritch captures while allied with her people.

In my opinion, the strongest thing about Varang is that she gives the saga a Na'vi antagonist who is neither a victim nor a sage. In Avatar (2009) the enemy is human, and in The Way of Water the main threat is Quaritch again, so a clan of Na'vi willing to burn ships changes the stakes.

The convoy ambush is her best entrance. It is the moment the Sullys' attempt to protect Spider falls apart, and it sets the tone for the third act.

The gun lessons are perhaps the most revealing scene. Watching Quaritch teach her to fire, and then seeing the Mangkwan carry firearms and flamethrowers, is the point where a regional dispute becomes a war with a new balance of force. It could be argued that this is the film's sharpest idea, since it shows how easily the RDA's methods spread.

The climax, where Kiri stops her from killing Neytiri, is the payoff, and it is the scene I would show to anyone asking why Varang matters.
