Na'vi Clans of Pandora: Omatikaya, Metkayina and Mangkwan Explained
The Na'vi clans with detailed screen time across the three Avatar films are the Omatikaya forest clan, the Metkayina reef clan and the Mangkwan, also called the Ash People. The Omatikaya appear in Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water, the Metkayina arrive in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and the Mangkwan, led by Varang, are the clan introduced in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025).

What Are the Na'vi Clans of Pandora?Spoilers
Na'vi clans are the separate communities of the blue humanoid people of Pandora, each tied to its own territory, its own leaders and its own way of living. Across Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), three clans receive real story weight: the Omatikaya of the forest, the Metkayina of the reef and the Mangkwan, known as the Ash People.
The films make clear that these three are not the whole map. In the final act of the first film Jake Sully unites the clans against the RDA, and in Fire and Ash he rallies the clans again after bonding with Toruk, so other communities exist beyond the three profiled here. None of the three plots states a total number, and the films concentrate on the clans that touch the Sully family directly.
How many Na'vi clans are there, and what are the others called? Searches for the clans also surface names such as Tlalim, Tawkami, Tipani, Kekunan, Aranahi, Sarentu and Li'ona, and headlines about "all 20 Na'vi clans" suggest the wider list is long. None of those clans plays a part in the Sully story across the three films, so this guide does not profile them and does not guess at their homes or leaders.
If you want the clans in the order you meet them, follow release order: forest first, reef second, ash third. Each entry reveals late plot, because a clan usually earns its place in the story in the second half of its film. For the wider setting, see our guide to pandora avatar, and for how the films connect, the avatar movies in order page lays out the sequence.
Omatikaya: The Forest Clan of HometreeSpoilers
The Omatikaya are the forest clan that takes in Jake Sully, and the whole saga is anchored to them. In Avatar (2009) Neytiri rescues Jake after wildlife attacks him in the forest and brings him to her clan, where he learns Na'vi ways and begins to fall in love with her. The clan name is spelled Omaticaya in some descriptions of the first film and Omatikaya in descriptions of the sequels.
Their home is Hometree, which sits above a rich unobtanium deposit, and that is exactly why the RDA wants it. Colonel Quaritch offers to restore Jake's legs if he reveals the clan's gathering place, and when administrator Selfridge orders the attack, Hometree is destroyed and Neytiri's father, Eytukan (played by Wes Studi), is killed. The final battle takes place at the Tree of Souls, where Jake's mind is permanently moved into his avatar body.
Jake also shows how a leader can bring clans together. He bonds with the great flying creature Toruk and unites the clans against the RDA, and the RDA is driven off Pandora.
In Avatar: The Way of Water, sixteen years later, Jake leads the Omatikaya in a guerrilla war against the returning RDA. When Quaritch closes in, the fear that Spider's knowledge could expose the clan sends the family away from the forest. Neytiri and Jake Sully remain the clan's best known faces, and Mo'at (CCH Pounder) is credited across all three films.
Metkayina: The Reef Clan Who Shelter the SullysSpoilers
The Metkayina are the reef people of Pandora, led by Tonowari and Ronal, and they first appear in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Cliff Curtis plays Tonowari and Kate Winslet plays Ronal. The Sully family flees to them when Jake fears that Spider's knowledge could lead Quaritch to the forest.
The welcome is not warm at first. The Sully children clash with the local youths, Lo'ak befriends an outcast tulkun named Payakan who was exiled by his own kind, and Kiri bonds with the Metkayina Spirit Tree. Quaritch eventually tracks the family to the reef, seizes a tulkun hunting ship and burns Na'vi dwellings while interrogating villagers, which turns the clan's home into a battlefield.
During the battle with the RDA ship, Neteyam rescues Lo'ak, Tsireya and Spider, the human boy raised on Pandora, before he is shot dead during the escape. The clan's decisive moment comes after Neteyam's funeral, when Tonowari declares the Sullys part of his clan and invites them to stay. That settles the arc, and it also pushes Jake to decide that he must fight rather than run.
In Avatar: Fire and Ash the Sullys are still living with the Metkayina, and the clan is drawn into the war again. Quaritch and the Mangkwan lead their attack to the Metkayina village and force Jake to surrender. In the later battle against the RDA fleet, Ronal is wounded and dies in childbirth, and Neytiri delivers Ronal's daughter, Pril, and is then captured.
Mangkwan: The Ash People of Fire and AshSpoilers
The Mangkwan, or Ash People, are the harsh Na'vi clan introduced in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), and they are led by Varang, played by Oona Chaplin.
Their first appearance is an ambush. Jake and Neytiri send Spider toward the human science camp on a convoy of Wind Trader ships, and the Mangkwan attack the convoy, burn the ships and scatter the Sully family. Later the clan takes Quaritch, Jake and the children captive, and Kiri has plants kill the guards so they can flee.
The clan becomes far more dangerous once Quaritch wins Varang's trust. He teaches her to use guns, arms her people with firearms and flamethrowers, and begins a relationship with her. In the final battle, Quaritch and the Mangkwan turn the fight against the Na'vi and the tulkun, and Varang is stopped from killing Neytiri only when Kiri finally reaches Eywa.
The ending does not settle their fate. The Ash People, Varang and the RDA all remain as ongoing threats, so the story is left open for further films, including avatar 4.

FAQs
How many Na'vi clans are there?
None of the three Avatar films states a total number of Na'vi clans. Three clans get detailed screen time: the Omatikaya, the Metkayina and the Mangkwan. Other clans exist, because Jake Sully unites the clans in Avatar (2009) and rallies them again in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Are there different races of Na'vi?
The films show different clans rather than separate races. The Omatikaya live in the forest, the Metkayina on the reef and the Mangkwan, or Ash People, are a harsh clan led by Varang. They differ in habitat, leaders and customs.
Can Na'vi mate with humans?
The films do not answer this directly. Jake Sully, a human, has his mind permanently moved into his avatar body at the Tree of Souls and then raises a family with Neytiri, but no film shows a human body and a Na'vi body having a child. Spider, a human boy raised on Pandora, is formally taken in by the Na'vi at the end of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
What clans are in Avatar 3?
Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), the third film, features the Metkayina, with whom the Sully family lives, and the newly introduced Mangkwan, or Ash People, led by Varang.
