Avatar Timeline: James Cameron's Pandora Story in Order
The Avatar timeline for James Cameron's Pandora films starts in 2154 with Avatar (2009), jumps sixteen years ahead for Avatar: The Way of Water, and continues straight from Neteyam's death in Avatar: Fire and Ash, with Avatar 4 reported for December 21, 2029. This is the Pandora saga about Jake Sully, Neytiri and the Na'vi, and it has nothing to do with Avatar: The Last Airbender. The three films were released in the same order as the story runs.
The Avatar Timeline in Order
Avatar (2009): The RDA Arrives on PandoraSpoilers
Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron and released in the US on December 18, 2009, opens the timeline in 2154, when the RDA mines unobtanium on the moon Pandora, home of the blue Na'vi. Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine, takes the place of his late twin brother in the avatar program, is rescued in the forest by Neytiri, and is taken in by her clan, the Omaticaya. Jake Sully learns Na'vi ways while Colonel Quaritch asks him to reveal where the clan gathers in return for new legs.
The middle of the film turns on Hometree, which sits above a rich unobtanium deposit. When Jake sabotages a bulldozer, administrator Selfridge orders the tree destroyed, and the attack kills Neytiri's father, Eytukan. Grace Augustine is fatally wounded when Trudy frees her, Jake and Norm. Jake then bonds with the great flying creature Toruk and unites the clans against the RDA. In the battle at the Tree of Souls, Pandora's own wildlife joins the fight, and Neytiri kills Quaritch to save Jake.
The story ends with the surviving humans expelled and Jake's mind permanently moved into his avatar body in a ritual at the Tree of Souls. That is the last event before the sixteen year gap, and it leaves Earth's interest in Pandora unresolved. For the film itself, see avatar 2009, and for the people involved, grace augustine has her own page.
Avatar: The Way of Water: Sixteen Years LaterSpoilers
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), directed by James Cameron and released in the US on December 16, 2022, is the second entry on the timeline, and it moves the story forward by sixteen years. In that gap the Na'vi have driven the humans off Pandora, and Jake Sully has gone from newcomer to leader of the Omatikaya. He and Neytiri now have sons Neteyam and Lo'ak, a daughter Tuk and an adopted daughter Kiri, while Spider, a human boy raised on Pandora, grows up beside them.
The timeline shifts here because the RDA comes back in a new form. Its recombinants are Na'vi bodies that carry the memories of dead soldiers, and the most dangerous is a revived Colonel Quaritch. His pursuit of Jake, and his discovery that Spider is his son, push the Sullys away from the forest and toward the Metkayina reef people under Tonowari and Ronal. On the reef, Lo'ak befriends the outcast tulkun Payakan, and Kiri's bond with the Spirit Tree brings a seizure that scientists call epilepsy.
The sequence closes at sea. Quaritch seizes a tulkun hunting ship and hunts the creatures near Na'vi villages, and the battle that follows takes Neteyam's life as he rescues Lo'ak, Tsireya and Spider. Afterward Tonowari welcomes the family into his clan, and Jake accepts that running will not protect anyone. At 192 minutes it is also the point where the saga stops being a single story about one outsider, and its own page is avatar the way of water.
Avatar: Fire and Ash: The War Reaches the ClansSpoilers
Avatar: Fire and Ash, released in the US on December 19, 2025, is the only film on the timeline that begins the day after its predecessor ends, with no jump in years. The Sullys are still mourning Neteyam among the Metkayina, and the immediate problem is Spider, whose breathing mask can no longer be trusted. Jake and Neytiri decide to send him to the human science camp aboard a Wind Trader convoy.
That decision brings a new people into the story. The Mangkwan, also called the Ash People, are a harsh Na'vi clan under Varang, and their attack on the convoy breaks the family apart. Quaritch takes Jake prisoner, and then, in an odd pairing, the two men search for Spider. Quaritch earns Varang's trust by teaching her to use guns, her warriors gain firearms and flamethrowers, and he later delivers Jake and Spider to the RDA base after leading the Mangkwan to the Metkayina village.
The last stretch is a war between clans and a fleet. Lo'ak's work with the injured tulkun Payakan and Ta'nok shakes the elders out of their pacifism, Jake bonds with Toruk to rally the clans, and Ronal dies in childbirth after the battle turns. Kiri reaches Eywa, Quaritch ends his own life on a floating rock after he and Jake save Spider, and the Na'vi welcome Spider as one of their people. Varang and the RDA are still active when it ends. TMDB lists the runtime at 198 minutes (Box Office Mojo gives 3 hours 17 minutes), and the film has its own page at avatar fire and ash.
What Comes Next: Avatar 4 and Avatar 5
Avatar 4 is reported for December 21, 2029, but the studio has not confirmed that date, so it appears on this timeline as a reported entry only. The date comes from a WION report of March 26, 2026, which took it from Disney's release schedule as shown in a social media post of the schedule. The same report says the date is still subject to change and that filming has not started.
TheWrap, writing on April 8, 2026, calls the date tentative and says James Cameron had not decided whether to go forward. It also quotes an insider who puts about 22 percent of the film as already shot, which is a claim and not a studio statement. TheWrap lists Avatar 5 for 2031, and the date given for it is December 19, 2031. No UK or Australian date has been reported for Avatar 4.
What the story would cover has not been made public. Avatar: Fire and Ash ends with the Ash People, Varang and the RDA still active, so the war on Pandora remains open. Trailer news lives under avatar 4 trailer, and the full status is on the Avatar 4 page.
Avatar Timeline Explained: Why the Order Is SimpleSpoilers
The Avatar timeline is simple because the release order and the story order are identical: Avatar (2009), then Avatar: The Way of Water, then Avatar: Fire and Ash. In my opinion, that is the series' quiet strength. A first time viewer never has to ask where a film sits, and the avatar movies in order list is a single line.
How many years sit between the films depends on whether you count the story or the calendar. In the story, The Way of Water begins sixteen years after the first film ends. In theaters, the gap ran from December 18, 2009 to December 16, 2022, just under thirteen years, and the third film followed on December 19, 2025, three years later. Fire and Ash continues directly from Neteyam's death, and I will not guess at a year count for it, because the film does not give one.
There is a second thread to follow, which is how the war grows. Jake unites the clans against the RDA in the first film, Quaritch returns as a recombinant in the second, and Spider becomes the bridge between both worlds in the third. As such, each film raises the scale of the same conflict: Hometree and the Tree of Souls, then the reef and the tulkun, then the clans themselves, including the Mangkwan. The Na'vi clans page and Pandora cover the setting. If you are starting fresh, begin with the Avatar movies hub and watch in release order, because it is also the story order.
