Quaritch: Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar
Stephen Lang gives the Avatar saga its principal human villain, the RDA officer Colonel Miles Quaritch, in Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), all directed by James Cameron. Killed in the first film, he returns in a Na'vi body and is still a threat at the end of the third.
Who Plays Colonel Miles Quaritch?
Who Is Quaritch in Avatar?
Stephen Lang plays the RDA colonel who hunts Jake Sully across the Avatar saga. The credits give him as Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water, and simply as Quaritch in Avatar: Fire and Ash, so all three names point to one character. Lang is billed fourth in each of the three films.
Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron, begins in 2154, when the RDA mines a valuable mineral on the moon Pandora, home to the blue Na'vi people. The colonel is the military face of that operation. When jake sully, a paralyzed former Marine, joins the avatar program in place of his late twin brother, the colonel offers a bargain: gather intelligence on the Omaticaya clan and the location of Hometree, and Jake's legs will be restored.
That bargain is the hinge of the first film. It explains why a wounded soldier agrees to live among the Na'vi in the first place, and it sets the colonel against the people Jake slowly comes to respect. If you are new to the saga, the full list is on the avatar characters page, and the films are laid out in avatar movies in order.
In the sequels he is no longer simply a colonel in a human body. He comes back in a Na'vi body, learns he has a son and ends up helping to arm a Na'vi clan for war.

Quaritch's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers
The colonel's arc runs from soldier, to revived copy of himself, to something closer to a warlord with a stake in the Na'vi world. Each film changes what he wants, even though his target stays the same.
In avatar 2009, he wants Hometree, which sits above a rich unobtanium deposit. When Jake sabotages a bulldozer, administrator Selfridge orders Hometree destroyed, and the attack kills Neytiri's father, Eytukan. In the final battle at the Tree of Souls, he exposes Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere, and neytiri kills him and saves Jake. The RDA is driven off pandora avatar.
In avatar the way of water, the RDA returns with recombinants, Na'vi bodies carrying the memories of dead soldiers. A recombinant copy of the colonel hunts Jake and captures spider avatar and the Sully children. Spider stays with him for a time and teaches him about Na'vi culture. The recombinant then tracks the family to the Metkayina reef, seizes a tulkun hunting ship, burns Na'vi dwellings while interrogating villagers, and hunts tulkun near Na'vi villages to draw Jake out. In the battle that follows, Jake strangles him unconscious, and Spider saves him from drowning but refuses to stay with him.
In avatar fire and ash, he captures Jake, and the two end up searching for Spider together. The Mangkwan, or Ash People, a harsh Na'vi clan led by varang avatar, later take him in. He earns her trust by teaching her to use guns, arms her people with firearms and flamethrowers, and begins a relationship with her. He later captures Spider, leads the Mangkwan to the Metkayina village and forces Jake to surrender. In the climactic battle, he and the Mangkwan turn the fight against the clans.
Quaritch, Jake, Spider and Varang: His Key Relationships
The colonel's most important relationship is with Jake, and the most surprising one is with Spider. In The Way of Water, he learns that Spider, the human boy who grew up on Pandora and is close to the Sully children, is his son. That discovery changes how he treats the boy and, arguably, how the film treats him.
Why is Quaritch obsessed with Jake? A chain of events ties them together: Jake took the intelligence deal, turned against the RDA and stood at the center of the battle in which the colonel was killed. The recombinant then hunts Jake in the sequel, and in Fire and Ash he captures him. The saga never spells out a deeper motive, so anything beyond that chain is interpretation.
With Spider, the relationship is more complicated. The boy teaches his father about Na'vi culture while a captive, saves him from drowning at the end of The Way of Water, and yet refuses to stay with him. In Fire and Ash, the colonel captures Spider again and RDA scientists test the boy. When Spider collapses, Kiri uses mycelia to let him breathe Pandoran air, and the Mangkwan then take the colonel, Jake and the children.
With Varang, the leader of the Ash People, the relationship is a political and personal alliance. He teaches her to use guns, arms the clan with firearms and flamethrowers, and begins a relationship with her. His other significant ties are to the Sully family, including lo'ak, and to the Metkayina leader tonowari, whose reef village he attacks.
So, is Quaritch a good guy? No: he orders or carries out destruction and killing in every film. That being said, the sequels give him a family stake, which makes him more than a one note villain.
What Happens to Quaritch? Death, Return and Avatar 4Spoilers
The colonel dies in Avatar (2009), returns as a recombinant in The Way of Water, and throws himself off a floating rock in Fire and Ash. The first death is clear: Neytiri kills him at the Tree of Souls. He survives the second film, since Jake strangles him unconscious and Spider saves him from drowning.
The third ending is less settled. After he and Jake work together to save Spider, caught in a magnetic flux, he throws himself off the floating rock. The film shows the leap, and the story does not settle whether he survived the fall. It is also worth remembering that he has already come back once, by an in world method (the recombinant program), not by luck.
Will he return in Avatar 4? Nothing reported about the film confirms whether he does. Avatar 4 is dated December 21, 2029 on Disney's release schedule according to a WION report of March 26, 2026, a date that is reported, not confirmed. TheWrap, on April 8, 2026, called the date tentative and said Cameron had not decided whether to go forward. For the latest, see the avatar 4 page and the avatar 4 trailer page.
After Fire and Ash, the Ash People, Varang and the RDA remain as ongoing threats, so the story is left open for further films. Stephen Lang has played the colonel in all three films so far, and the wider ensemble is on the avatar cast page.
Best Quaritch Moments, Ranked by Impact
The best scenes for this character are the ones where he is allowed to be patient or practical rather than simply loud. This list is my opinion, hedged where the films leave room.
First, the legs offer in Avatar (2009). It is a quiet bargain, and it explains the whole film. Perhaps the most effective part is that it makes Jake's betrayal of the Omaticaya a choice, not an accident.
Second, the attack on Hometree and the later moment when he exposes Jake to the toxic atmosphere at the Tree of Souls. They show a soldier who treats Pandora as a problem to clear, which is what the first film needs from him.
Third, the scenes with Spider in The Way of Water, where the boy teaches him about Na'vi culture. It could be argued that this is the first time the saga asks the audience to see the villain as a person, and it does so without excusing the burning of Na'vi dwellings or the tulkun hunt that follow.
Fourth, the arming of the Ash People in Fire and Ash. Teaching Varang to use guns and handing the Mangkwan firearms and flamethrowers is a very characteristic solution: he does not fight Pandora's people with soldiers, he turns some of them into an army. It is also the clearest case where the recombinant has become more than a copy of the original man.
Finally, the ending of Fire and Ash, where he and Jake must cooperate to save Spider before he throws himself off the floating rock. It is the one moment where the two enemies want the same thing, and in my opinion it is the best scene they share. If you want to compare it with the other films, avatar movies ranked has the full order.

FAQs
Who plays Quaritch in Avatar?
Stephen Lang plays Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash. He is billed fourth in each film, and James Cameron directed all three.
Is Quaritch a good guy?
No, he is the saga's main human antagonist. He offers Jake his legs in return for intelligence on Hometree in Avatar (2009), burns Na'vi dwellings and hunts tulkun in The Way of Water, and arms the Ash People in Fire and Ash. His son Spider complicates him without making him a hero.
Why did Quaritch crush his skull?
As far as the major plot beats go, the colonel does not crush a skull in any of the three films, so there is no scene to explain. The violence the story does show includes his exposing Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere in Avatar (2009), and Jake strangling him unconscious in The Way of Water.
Why is Quaritch obsessed with Jake?
The intelligence deal in Avatar (2009), Jake's turn against the RDA and the battle in which the colonel is killed tie the two together. The recombinant then hunts Jake in The Way of Water and captures him in Fire and Ash. The saga never states a deeper motive, so anything further is interpretation.
Who is Quaritch's son?
Spider, the human boy who grew up on Pandora, is his son. The colonel learns this in Avatar: The Way of Water. Spider saves him from drowning at the end of that film but refuses to stay with him.
Will Quaritch be in Avatar 4?
Nothing reported confirms whether he returns in Avatar 4. WION reports the film as dated December 21, 2029 on Disney's schedule, a date that is reported, not confirmed, and TheWrap says Cameron had not decided whether to go forward.
