Who Plays Neytiri?

Who Is Neytiri in Avatar?

Neytiri is a Na'vi woman of the Omaticaya clan on the moon Pandora, and she is the person who brings Jake Sully into Na'vi life. She is played by Zoe Saldaña in all three films, billed second each time behind Sam Worthington, and the credits list her simply as Neytiri.

She first appears in Avatar (2009), set in 2154, when the RDA mines a valuable mineral on Pandora and Jake takes the place of his dead twin brother in the avatar program. After wildlife attacks Jake in the forest, Neytiri saves him and brings him to her clan. Colonel Quaritch meanwhile asks Jake to gather intelligence on the Omaticaya, in return for a promise to restore his legs. Jake learns Na'vi ways, and he begins to fall in love with her.

By Avatar: The Way of Water, sixteen years have passed. Jake leads the Omatikaya, and he and Neytiri have sons Neteyam and Lo'ak, a daughter Tuk and an adopted daughter Kiri. The human boy Spider, who grew up on Pandora, is close to the children. In Avatar: Fire and Ash she is still a mother, now grieving and facing a harsher Na'vi clan. If you want the wider cast, our guide to the Avatar characters places her beside Jake, Quaritch and the rest.

Neytiri's Story Arc Across the Three FilmsSpoilers

Neytiri's arc runs from the woman who brings Jake into Na'vi life in the first film to a grieving mother in the third, and each film takes something from her. In Avatar (2009), Jake sabotages a bulldozer, administrator Selfridge orders Hometree destroyed, and Jake confesses his role in the plan. The attack destroys Hometree and kills her father, Eytukan. Jake later bonds with the great flying creature Toruk and unites the clans against the RDA. At the Tree of Souls, Quaritch exposes Jake's human body to the toxic atmosphere, and Neytiri kills Quaritch and saves Jake. Afterward Jake's mind is permanently moved into his avatar body, and he starts a new life among the Na'vi with her.

In The Way of Water, Jake leads a guerrilla war against the returning RDA while a recombinant copy of Quaritch hunts him. Jake and Neytiri rescue their captured children, and the family then flees to the Metkayina reef people led by Tonowari and Ronal. When Quaritch tracks them down and the final battle begins, Neteyam rescues Lo'ak, Tsireya and Spider but is shot dead during the escape. Neytiri attacks Quaritch's crew alongside Jake, and Kiri saves Neytiri and Tuk. After Neteyam's funeral, Tonowari welcomes the Sullys as part of his clan.

In Fire and Ash, the family is still grieving Neteyam. Spider can no longer safely use his breathing mask, so Jake and Neytiri send him toward the human science camp with the Wind Traders. The convoy is ambushed by the Mangkwan, or Ash People, led by Varang, and the family is scattered. During the closing battle Neytiri is captured, and Kiri reaches Eywa and stops Varang from killing her.

Neytiri's Family, Allies and Enemies

Neytiri's most important relationship is with Jake Sully, and the rest of her circle is mostly defined by what she has lost or protected. Their bond begins when she rescues him and brings him to the Omaticaya, and it is tested when he confesses his part in the attack on Hometree. By the later films they are partners in raising a family and in fighting the RDA together.

Her children are the center of the sequels. Neteyam is killed in The Way of Water. Lo'ak befriends the outcast tulkun Payakan, and Tuk is the Sullys' daughter. Kiri is the adopted daughter, and she saves Neytiri in The Way of Water and again in Fire and Ash. Spider is the human boy who grew up on Pandora and is close to the Sully children, and in Fire and Ash the Na'vi formally take him in as one of their people. Her father Eytukan, played by Wes Studi, dies when Hometree is destroyed. Mo'at, played by CCH Pounder, appears in all three films.

Her enemies are the human soldiers and those who side with them. Colonel Quaritch is the constant one, first as a human officer and later as a recombinant. Fire and Ash adds Varang, whose Mangkwan clan Quaritch arms with firearms and flamethrowers. Among the Metkayina, Tonowari and Ronal give the family shelter, and the larger map of Pandora's peoples is covered in our guide to the Na'vi clans.

Does Neytiri Die?Spoilers

Neytiri does not die in any of the three films, so her status as of Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) is alive. She comes close more than once. In Avatar (2009) she survives the battle at the Tree of Souls after killing Quaritch to save Jake. In Avatar: The Way of Water she survives the fight aboard the RDA ship, with Kiri's help. In Avatar: Fire and Ash she is captured by the Mangkwan, and Kiri stops Varang from killing her.

The losses around her are another matter. Her father Eytukan dies in the destruction of Hometree, and her son Neteyam is shot dead while rescuing Lo'ak, Tsireya and Spider during the escape in The Way of Water. The ending of Fire and Ash leaves Varang, the Ash People and the RDA as ongoing threats, so the story stays open for further films.

The next entry is Avatar 4. It is reported for December 21, 2029 on Disney's release schedule, according to WION, while TheWrap calls the date tentative and says James Cameron has not decided whether to go ahead with it. No story details for the film have been announced, so any claim about Neytiri's role in it is speculation. The Avatar timeline shows where each film sits in the story so far.

Neytiri's Best Moments, Picked by Priya Nair

In my opinion, Neytiri's best scenes are the ones where her grief and her skill collide, and it could be argued that the series gives her more to do in anger than in calm. These are my picks, and they are opinion, not canon.

First, her rescue of Jake in Avatar (2009). It sets up everything else, because a wounded stranger becomes a member of her clan, and the whole film depends on her choosing to bring him home.

Second, the Tree of Souls battle, where she kills Quaritch and saves Jake after he is exposed to the toxic atmosphere. Perhaps the clearest sign of her place in the saga is that the first film's final blow is hers and not Jake's.

Third, the aftermath of Neteyam's death in The Way of Water. She and Jake attack Quaritch's crew, and the film lets the loss drive her instead of leaving her beside the action. A smaller echo comes in Fire and Ash, when she sneaks into the RDA base while Spider breaks out and Garvin frees Jake. Her capture in the closing battle is a reminder that she is no more invulnerable than the humans she fights.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Neytiri in Avatar?

Zoe Saldaña plays Neytiri in all three films: Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). She is billed second in each, behind Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, and all three films are directed by James Cameron.

Does Neytiri die in Avatar?

No, Neytiri survives all three films. She kills Quaritch in Avatar (2009), survives the battle in The Way of Water, and is captured by Varang's Mangkwan in Fire and Ash before Kiri stops Varang from killing her. Her father Eytukan and her son Neteyam are the family members who die.

How tall is Neytiri from Avatar?

No studio or trade source gives an official height for Neytiri, so any figure quoted online would be a guess. What the films establish is her role: she is a Na'vi woman of the Omaticaya clan, played by Zoe Saldaña, who rescues Jake Sully in Avatar (2009).

What is Jake's banshee called?

No studio or trade source names Jake's banshee, so we do not give a name. The flying creature the films single out for him is Toruk, the great flying creature he bonds with in Avatar (2009) and again in Fire and Ash, using it to unite the clans against the RDA.

Why was Neteyam killed off?

In the story, Neteyam is shot dead during the escape after he rescues Lo'ak, Tsireya and Spider from the RDA ship in The Way of Water. The films give no reason beyond the story itself, so anything about the filmmakers' intent would be speculation. His death shapes Neytiri and Jake's grief in Fire and Ash.

Why does Neytiri accept Kiri but not Spider?

The films do not state a single reason, so this is a matter of interpretation. Kiri is the Sullys' adopted daughter and saves Neytiri in both sequels. Spider is a human who grew up on Pandora, and in Fire and Ash his breathing mask fails, so Jake and Neytiri send him toward the human science camp. By the end of that film the Na'vi formally take him in as one of their people.
