About the Release Order
The John Wick movies in order of release are four main films and one spinoff, running from John Wick (2014) to Ballerina (2025). Release order is the way audiences first met the story, and it is the easiest list to follow because only one film, Ballerina, arrived out of story sequence.
- John Wick (2014), directed by Chad Stahelski
- John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), directed by Chad Stahelski
- John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019), directed by Chad Stahelski
- John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), directed by Chad Stahelski
- Ballerina (2025), directed by Len Wiseman, a spinoff
The four main films grow with each outing, and the runtimes show it: 101 minutes for the first film, 122 for Chapter 2, 131 for Chapter 3 and 170 for Chapter 4. Ballerina runs 125 minutes and, according to TheWrap, is the first feature length spinoff in the series. If you want the full list with cast and box office for each entry, the John Wick movies hub and the how many John Wick movies page lay it out.
The Continental: From the World of John Wick is not a film, so it has no number here. It is a three part prequel miniseries that streamed on Peacock in the US, premiering on September 22, 2023, which puts it between Chapter 4 and Ballerina in release terms. Each part ran at feature length, and the story is set in New York City in 1975.
There is one more entry to come. Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon on April 1, 2025 that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development with Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski and Thunder Road, and no release date has been given. The latest status is on the John Wick 5 page, and the film will join the end of this list when it arrives.
About the Chronological Order
The John Wick movies in chronological order put Ballerina between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, with The Continental ahead of everything else. Only the spinoff and the television prequel change places, so the four main films keep the same sequence in both lists.
- The Continental: From the World of John Wick (Peacock miniseries, set in 1975), as background
- John Wick (2014)
- John Wick: Chapter 2
- John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum
- Ballerina
- John Wick: Chapter 4
Why does Ballerina sit there? TheWrap reports that the film is set during the events of Chapter 3, so it is neither a clean prequel nor a clean sequel. It runs alongside the third film, and that is why John Wick appears in it (Keanu Reeves is billed second), as do Winston, played by Ian McShane, the Director, played by Anjelica Huston, and Charon, played by Lance Reddick. Chapter 4 follows on from Chapter 3, so slotting Ballerina directly before it keeps the timeline tidy.
The Continental is the one true prequel. It follows a young Winston Scott, played by Colin Woodell, in 1975 New York, along with a young Charon, played by Ayomide Adegun, and it shows how the Continental hotel came to be. Because it is a series and not a film, it works best as context and not as a required step. For the full story laid out era by era, see the John Wick timeline.
Where Should You Start With John Wick?
In my opinion, you should start with John Wick (2014) and watch in release order, because the two lists only disagree about Ballerina and The Continental. The first film is also the best introduction to the rules of this world: John is a retired hitman grieving his wife Helen, a puppy she arranged for him is killed by Iosef Tarasov, and that single act of cruelty sets the whole machine moving.
So, which list should you follow? It could be argued that release order wins for a first watch, since each main film builds on the one before it and the ending of one sets up the next. Chronological order is the better choice on a rewatch, when you already know Winston and Charon and want to see Ballerina land in the middle of Chapter 3 instead of after the full run.
Perhaps the trickier question is when to fit in the spinoff and the series. My pick is to leave Ballerina until after Chapter 4, the way it was released. It features the last appearance of Lance Reddick as Charon, according to TheWrap, and that farewell lands harder once you have spent four films with him. The Continental is the piece I would treat as optional: it is built around Winston and Charon, so it pays off most for viewers who already care about them.
If you are short on time, the four main films tell a complete story on their own, in my view, and Ballerina is the single extra worth adding. FAQs
Which order to watch John Wick?
Watch John Wick (2014), John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4 in that order, then Ballerina. That is both the release order of the main films and their story order. Ballerina is a spinoff released in 2025 but set during Chapter 3, so on a rewatch you can move it ahead of Chapter 4.
Is the Ballerina a sequel to John Wick?
No, Ballerina is a spinoff, not a sequel. It was released after Chapter 4 in 2025, but TheWrap reports it is set during the events of Chapter 3. It follows a new character, Eve, played by Ana de Armas, and John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, appears in it.
Is Ballerina a prequel to John Wick?
Not exactly. A prequel happens before a story, and Ballerina takes place during Chapter 3, so it overlaps with the main series instead of preceding it. In chronological order it sits after Chapter 3 and before Chapter 4. The true prequel is The Continental, set in New York in 1975.
Who are the main characters in The Continental and John Wick?
In the films, the central characters are John Wick (Keanu Reeves), Winston (Ian McShane), Charon (Lance Reddick) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne). In The Continental, the leads include a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), Cormac (Mel Gibson), KD (Mishel Prada), Frankie (Ben Robson) and a young Charon (Ayomide Adegun). The full list is on the John Wick characters page.
Is John Wick: Chapter 5 coming, and where will it fit?
Lionsgate announced on April 1, 2025 that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development with Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski and Thunder Road, and no release date has been given. When it arrives it will be the next main film after Chapter 4, so it will go at the end of both watch orders.
How long are all the John Wick movies?
Watching all 5 John Wick movies takes 10 hours and 49 minutes, or 8 hours and 44 minutes for the 4 main films without the spin-offs. The longest is John Wick: Chapter 4 at 2 hours and 50 minutes and the shortest is John Wick at 1 hour and 41 minutes.
