Who Plays Saruman?

Who Is Saruman in The Lord of the Rings?

Saruman is the wizard who rules Isengard and, by the time of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, has sided with the Dark Lord Sauron. Christopher Lee plays him in fellowship of the ring (2001) and the two towers (2002), both directed by Peter Jackson, where he is billed seventh and twelfth respectively, credited as Saruman.

The title "the White" causes confusion, because Gandalf becomes Gandalf the White in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, after he returns from death in a new form. Saruman the White is the fuller form of his own name, but the two wizards are different characters with different loyalties, and gandalf is the one Saruman holds prisoner.

In Tolkien's books, wizards of this kind are called the Istari, and they arrive in Middle-earth as emissaries of the Valar, the godlike powers who shaped the world. Saruman is the leader of that order, which is why his turn to Sauron carries so much weight. In the films, his influence in Rohan works through Gríma (often written Grima without the accent), the adviser who stands beside King Théoden.

Saruman and Sauron are also separate figures. Sauron forged the One Ring and is the Dark Lord of Mordor, while Saruman is a wizard who works for him and commands his own army of Uruk-hai from Isengard. If you want the other half of that pairing, the profile of sauron lord of the rings covers him. For the wider ensemble, see the lord of the rings characters index.

Saruman's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Saruman's arc runs from helping to rescue Gandalf from Dol Guldur to serving Sauron and being trapped in his own tower, and it is easiest to follow in chronological order, which is almost the reverse of release order. In lord of the rings movies in order terms, the earliest film he appears in is the animated war of the rohirrim (2024), directed by Kenji Kamiyama and set long before Bilbo finds the Ring. Isengard is already a seat of power there: the Dunlending lord Wulf takes the captured Héra to it. By the end of the film, Saruman keeps Isengard and offers friendship to Fréaláf, the new king of Rohan.

The next appearance in story order is in the battle of the five armies (2014). Saruman joins Galadriel and Elrond in rescuing Gandalf from Dol Guldur and driving Sauron away. In other words, the wizard who later serves Sauron acts against him in this scene. The films never say when or why he changed sides, so the contrast between these two stages is all they give anyone asking why he turned evil.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, he has sided with Sauron. Gandalf is held prisoner by Saruman, and Boromir dies defending Merry and Pippin from Saruman's Uruk-hai, who carry the two hobbits off. In The Two Towers, King Théoden is under the spell of his adviser Gríma and of Saruman until Gandalf frees him. Saruman then sends a huge Uruk-hai army against Helm's Deep, where the defenders suffer heavy losses before Gandalf and the Rohirrim arrive at dawn. The Ents, angered by the destruction of their forest, march on Isengard and flood it, trapping Saruman in his tower. In the return of the king (2003), the heroes gather at Isengard before moving on to Edoras.

Saruman's Allies and Enemies

Saruman's relationships define him more than any single scene, and the main ones are with Sauron, Gandalf, Gríma and the Uruk-hai. With Sauron the relationship is one of allegiance: the films state that he has sided with the Dark Lord. The difference in power is plain, since Sauron is the one who made the Ring and Saruman is the one who sends armies in his cause.

With Gandalf the relationship is a reversal. In The Battle of the Five Armies, Saruman helps free Gandalf from Dol Guldur, and by The Fellowship of the Ring he is the one holding Gandalf prisoner. Gandalf later returns as Gandalf the White and is the person who breaks the hold Saruman has over Théoden.

Gríma, the adviser to King Théoden, is the human face of Saruman's influence in Rohan. In The Two Towers, Théoden is under the spell of both men, and it is Gandalf who frees him. The Uruk-hai are Saruman's own soldiers: they kill and capture in The Fellowship of the Ring, and they make up the army sent against Helm's Deep.

The enemies he makes at the end are the Ents. Merry and Pippin befriend the Ent Treebeard, and the Ents' march on Isengard is what traps him. Across the long gap in time, Saruman also meets the Rohirrim twice, as the neighbor who offers friendship to Fréaláf in The War of the Rohirrim and as the enemy at Helm's Deep, the fortress that takes its name from Helm in that film's ending. For the full cast around him, see the lord of the rings cast page.

What Happened to Saruman in the Lord of the Rings Movies?Spoilers

In the films, Saruman is last seen trapped in his tower at Isengard after the Ents flood it in The Two Towers. His position is settled there: the Ents march on the fortress, the water rises, and the wizard who sent an army to Helm's Deep is left with nowhere to go.

Who killed Saruman in Lord of the Rings? No film shows him being killed, so there is no named killer to give, and anything beyond that would be a guess. What the films do show is Gandalf, after the battle at Helm's Deep, warning that Sauron will answer the defeat, which moves the war's focus away from Isengard. In The Return of the King the heroes gather at Isengard before riding on to Edoras.

The short answer for a casual viewer is that he loses his army, his tower and his standing, and his story stops being the main thread once the Ring quest and the siege of Minas Tirith take over. If you want to see where each of those events falls, the lord of the rings timeline places each film in order.

Best Saruman Moments, and Why They Work

In my opinion, Saruman's best moments are the ones where the films show what he can do without needing him on screen. The first is the Uruk-hai attack in The Fellowship of the Ring, where Boromir dies defending Merry and Pippin. It is an act of Saruman's will carried out by soldiers, and it breaks the Fellowship apart in a single sequence.

The second is Helm's Deep in The Two Towers. It could be argued that this is the most complete picture of his power, because it combines the huge Uruk-hai army, the heavy losses among the defenders and the long night before Gandalf arrives with Éomer and the Rohirrim at dawn. As a set piece, it also shows how much of the second film depends on Saruman, even though Christopher Lee is billed twelfth there.

The third is the flooding of Isengard, which pays off the Ents' slow decision to join the war. Perhaps the quiet irony is that the wizard behind the destruction of a forest is undone by the forest's own guardians.

The fourth is the one most people overlook: his appearance in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, where he stands alongside Galadriel and Elrond against Sauron. Watched in release order, the Hobbit trilogy arrives after the Lord of the Rings films, so, in my reading, it shows a character you already know as a villain acting as an ally. That being said, it is a short scene, and it works mainly because of what the earlier trilogy has taught you about him.

Facts

FAQs

Why did Saruman turn evil?

The films never say. By The Fellowship of the Ring, Saruman has sided with Sauron and holds Gandalf prisoner, yet The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies shows him helping Galadriel and Elrond drive Sauron out of Dol Guldur.

Are Saruman and Sauron the same?

No. Sauron is the Dark Lord who forged the One Ring, and Saruman is a separate wizard who has sided with him. Saruman commands the Uruk-hai from Isengard, while Sauron is the power behind Mordor.

Who killed Saruman in Lord of the Rings?

No film shows anyone killing Saruman. The last thing the story establishes is that the Ents flood Isengard in The Two Towers and trap him in his tower.

Why does Gandalf call himself Saruman?

He does not. Gandalf and Saruman are different characters, and in The Fellowship of the Ring Saruman holds Gandalf prisoner. The mix up is easy to make because Gandalf returns as Gandalf the White in The Two Towers, and the two wizards are often discussed together.

Is Gandalf also Saruman?

No. They are two wizards on opposite sides by the time of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Gandalf frees King Théoden from the spell of Saruman and Gríma, and he arrives at Helm's Deep in time to help beat Saruman's Uruk-hai army.

Who plays Saruman in Lord of the Rings?

Christopher Lee plays Saruman in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002). He is billed seventh in the first film and twelfth in the second.
