Lord of the Rings Characters: Who Is Who in Middle-earth

The main Lord of the Rings characters are the nine members of the Fellowship (Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir), their enemies Sauron, Saruman and Gollum, and the dwarf company led by Thorin Oakenshield, with Bilbo Baggins as their burglar, in The Hobbit. They are spread across seven films: the trilogy of 2001 to 2003, The Hobbit trilogy of 2012 to 2014 and the animated spin-off The War of the Rohirrim (2024).

Who Are the Lord of the Rings Characters?

The Lord of the Rings characters fall into three groups: the Fellowship that carries the Ring in the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson (2001 to 2003), the dwarf company and its allies in The Hobbit trilogy, also directed by Peter Jackson (2012 to 2014), and the Rohan cast of The War of the Rohirrim (2024), directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Because the Hobbit films and the Rohirrim spin-off are set earlier in Middle-earth than the trilogy, the same faces turn up in a different order from the one in which theaters showed them. If you are unsure where to begin, our lord of the rings movies in order guide sets out both sequences, and the lord of the rings movies hub shows how the films connect.

The Fellowship of the Ring

The Fellowship has nine members, and each was chosen at the council in Rivendell in fellowship of the ring. frodo baggins lord of the rings, played by Elijah Wood, inherits the One Ring from his uncle Bilbo and volunteers to carry it to Mount Doom. samwise gamgee, played by Sean Astin, is his gardener and refuses to let him go alone. Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are the other two hobbits, and Saruman's Uruk-hai carry them off at the end of the first film.

gandalf, played by Ian McKellen, is the wizard who works out what the Ring truly is and sends Frodo out of the Shire. aragorn lord of the rings, played by Viggo Mortensen, is the ranger who first guides the hobbits, and by the third film he has to decide whether to claim his heritage as king of Gondor. legolas lord of the rings, played by Orlando Bloom, is the elf archer, and gimli lord of the rings, played by John Rhys-Davies, is the dwarf who also voices the tree-like Ent Treebeard in The Two Towers. boromir lord of the rings, played by Sean Bean, is the Gondorian whose loyalty to his city is tested by the Ring. Think of the group as a good football squad: no single player can cover every position, and the quest works because each one brings a different skill.

Allies and Supporting Characters

The main allies of the Fellowship are the elves, the Riders of Rohan and the men of Gondor, who matter as much as the nine. Arwen (Liv Tyler) carries the wounded Frodo to Rivendell, where he is healed, and Hugo Weaving plays Elrond. galadriel lord of the rings, played by Cate Blanchett, warns the company in Lothlorien that the Ring will test them. In the two towers the story moves to Rohan, where Bernard Hill plays King Théoden and Miranda Otto plays Éowyn. David Wenham plays Faramir, whose rangers capture Frodo and Sam, and John Noble plays his father Denethor, the steward of Gondor, in return of the king.

One figure sits between ally and enemy. gollum, played by Andy Serkis, held the Ring before Bilbo and agrees to guide Frodo and Sam toward Mordor in The Two Towers, though he has designs of his own on the Ring. Perhaps that is why he is the hardest character on the list to place as friend or foe.

Lord of the Rings Characters: Villains

The Lord of the Rings villains begin with sauron lord of the rings, the Dark Lord who forged the master Ring to dominate the other Rings of Power. He is mostly a presence in the trilogy, and the Hobbit films credit Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug / Sauron. saruman lord of the rings, played by Christopher Lee, is the wizard who has sided with Sauron and sends the Uruk-hai army to attack Helm's Deep. Sauron's Black Riders hunt the hobbits as they leave the Shire, and the giant spider Shelob waits in her lair on the road to Mordor.

The Hobbit trilogy adds its own antagonists. smaug, played by Cumberbatch, is the dragon sleeping beneath the Lonely Mountain. Azog is the Orc chieftain who hunts Thorin, and his son Bolg takes over that pursuit in desolation of smaug. The Great Goblin, played by Barry Humphries, rules the goblin tunnels of the Misty Mountains. In The War of the Rohirrim the enemy is human: Freca (Shaun Dooley) and his son Wulf (Luke Pasqualino) are Dunlending nobles who turn a refused marriage into a war against Rohan.

The Hobbit Trilogy Characters

The Hobbit films are built around a quest company of thirteen dwarves, a hobbit and a wizard. In the hobbit an unexpected journey, a young Bilbo Baggins, played here by Martin Freeman, is recruited by Gandalf as the burglar. thorin oakenshield, played by Richard Armitage, leads the dwarves and wants the Lonely Mountain back. Among the thirteen are Balin (Ken Stott), Bofur (James Nesbitt), Fili (Dean O'Gorman), Kili (Aidan Turner) and Dwalin (Graham McTavish). For the full story of the hobbit who started it all, see bilbo baggins lord of the rings.

Outside the company are Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy), Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), and the Wood-elf king Thranduil (Lee Pace). Evangeline Lilly plays the elf Tauriel, and Orlando Bloom returns as Legolas. In Lake-town, Luke Evans plays the bargeman Bard and Stephen Fry plays the Master of Laketown, while Billy Connolly plays Dain Ironfoot in battle of the five armies. As a small aside, Billy Boyd, who played Pippin, is credited with the song The Last Goodbye from that film.

The War of the Rohirrim Characters

The War of the Rohirrim is an animated spin-off about Rohan's history, narrated by Éowyn, again voiced by Miranda Otto. war of the rohirrim centers on Héra (Gaia Wise), the daughter of King Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox). Fréaláf (Laurence Ubong Williams) and Olwyn (Lorraine Ashbourne) are among the Rohan cast, and Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, the trilogy's Pippin and Merry, voice the characters Shank and Wrot. The story explains how the fortress later called Helm's Deep got its name, and it introduces the Rohan characters that the trilogy builds on.

Two things stand out when you read the list. The ensemble is mostly male, with Arwen, Galadriel, Éowyn and, in the later films, Tauriel and Héra as the main exceptions. And the same actors recur across decades, since Gandalf, Legolas, Galadriel and Elrond all bridge the two trilogies.

What Comes Next for the Characters

The next film, the hunt for gollum, is dated for 17 December 2027 by Warner Bros. and New Line, and Variety Australia reported on 15 July 2026 that filming was under way in New Zealand. The lord of the rings timeline shows where each film sits. If you want to follow the ring itself, go to the one ring, and the middle earth map places each character's home.
