Who Plays Gandalf the Grey?

Who Is Gandalf and Who Plays Him?

Gandalf is the wizard at the center of both Middle-earth trilogies, and Ian McKellen plays him in all six main films, all directed by Peter Jackson. The character is credited as Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003), and as Gandalf the Grey in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). McKellen is billed second in the first three Lord of the Rings films and in An Unexpected Journey, and first in the last two Hobbit films.

Is he an elf or a human? Neither. In J. R. R. Tolkien's books he is a Maia, a lesser spirit of the same order as the powers who shaped the world, sent to Middle-earth in the shape of an old man as one of the Istari, the order of wizards. His name in the far west, before he came east, is Olórin. The films keep this simpler and present him as a wizard: the one who recruits Bilbo as the burglar for Thorin's company in The Hobbit, and the one who works out the true nature of the Ring in The Fellowship of the Ring.

What does the name mean? Tolkien took it from a list of dwarf names in Old Norse poetry, and it is usually read as meaning "wand elf", which is a neat fit for a wizard with a staff. Viewers meet him first as the Grey and later, after he returns from death in The Two Towers, as the White.

Where does the 111th birthday fit? It is the one fixed date that ties the two trilogies together. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo leaves home on his 111th birthday and gives the Ring to his young nephew Frodo, and The Battle of the Five Armies ends with the wizard visiting Bilbo on that same birthday.

Gandalf the Grey to Gandalf the White: His Story ArcSpoilers

The wizard's arc runs from a recruiter of dwarves to the commander who breaks the siege at Helm's Deep, with one change of title along the way, from Gray to White. In story order it begins with The Hobbit, where he arrives at Bilbo's door with thirteen dwarves and names the hobbit as the company's burglar for the plan to retake the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. When trolls catch the party, he saves everyone by tricking the trolls into staying out until sunrise, and later he leads the company to Rivendell. In The Desolation of Smaug he brings them to Beorn's home, then turns aside with Radagast to find the tombs of the Nazgul empty. He goes alone into Dol Guldur, where the Necromancer overpowers him and is revealed to be Sauron. In The Battle of the Five Armies, Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman rescue him and drive Sauron away.

The Fellowship of the Ring picks up decades later. He works out that Bilbo's ring is the One Ring and tells Frodo to leave the Shire, but Saruman, who has sided with Sauron, holds him prisoner. He still reaches Rivendell and joins the nine companions. His path through the mines of Moria ends when he falls into the abyss while fighting a Balrog, which is the death that many viewers remember.

He does not stay gone. The Two Towers brings him back, returned from death in a new form as Gandalf the White, and he meets Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli in Rohan. At Edoras he frees King Théoden from the spell of Gríma and Saruman, and at Helm's Deep he rides in at dawn with Éomer and the Rohirrim to rout the Uruk-hai. In The Return of the King he rides to Gondor, where Denethor is sinking into despair, while Aragorn takes the Paths of the Dead and Frodo and Sam climb toward Mount Doom.

One small appearance sits outside the two trilogies. At the end of The War of the Rohirrim (2024), directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the wizard meets Héra and tells her about orcs hunting for rings.

Who Are Gandalf's Closest Allies and Enemies?

The wizard's strongest bonds are with the hobbits, and his sharpest conflict is with Saruman. Bilbo Baggins is where the story starts, since he is picked as burglar for Thorin's company, and Bilbo later leaves home and gives the Ring to his nephew. Frodo Baggins is the person he warns, guides and eventually leaves Middle-earth beside.

With Aragorn the bond forms on the road. They are reunited in Rohan after the return as the White, and later, as the war closes in, Aragorn must decide whether to claim his heritage as king of Gondor. With Thorin Oakenshield the relationship is more strained. The wizard brings Thorin's company to Rivendell, where the elves help them, and the eagles later rescue them from the burning trees, but Thorin eventually falls under a sickness of greed that nobody can treat.

On the other side, Saruman is the betrayal. He holds his fellow wizard prisoner in The Fellowship of the Ring, yet in The Battle of the Five Armies he helps rescue him from Dol Guldur, a wrinkle you will notice if you watch in release order. Sauron is the long opponent, first as the Necromancer who overpowers him and later as the force behind the planned assault on Minas Tirith. Galadriel helps rescue him in the Hobbit trilogy and warns Frodo in Lothlorien in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Gollum links the two stories through the Ring, since Bilbo wins a riddle contest with him and takes the magic ring that later becomes Frodo's burden.

What Happens to Gandalf at the End?Spoilers

The wizard survives both trilogies and, at the end of The Return of the King, sails from Middle-earth for the Undying Lands. After the Ring is destroyed, Mordor falls apart and Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor. Years later Frodo, still scarred by his ordeal, hands the Red Book to Sam and leaves by ship with Gandalf, Bilbo and the elves.

That voyage follows the only death he appears to suffer. He falls into the abyss in Moria fighting the Balrog, comes back as Gandalf the White in The Two Towers, and does not die on screen again. The Hobbit trilogy places him earlier in the timeline, so his last Hobbit scene, a visit to Bilbo on his 111th birthday, leads straight into the first Lord of the Rings film.

What comes next for the series? The Hunt for Gollum is dated for 17 December 2027 by Warner Bros. and New Line, and Variety Australia reported on 15 July 2026 that filming had begun in New Zealand. To see where every film sits, read the lord of the rings timeline.

Gandalf's Best Moments Across the Films

In my opinion, the wizard is at his best when the films let him win by cleverness or timing rather than by spectacle. The troll scene in An Unexpected Journey is the cleanest example: he tricks the trolls into staying out until sunrise, and a figure with a staff wins by trickery rather than a duel.

The fall in Moria is the emotional peak of The Fellowship of the Ring. It matters less for the Balrog than for what it removes: the Fellowship loses its adviser and has to survive on its own judgment in Lothlorien, where Boromir then cracks. Compare that with the Dol Guldur sequence in The Desolation of Smaug, where he is the one overpowered, and it could be argued that the franchise teaches the same lesson twice, that his power has limits.

My pick for the best single moment is the dawn at Helm's Deep in The Two Towers. The White Wizard arrives with Éomer and the Rohirrim at sunrise, after leaving to find reinforcements, and the Uruk-hai army is routed. It is the payoff to his return in white, and it works because the film has spent a full night showing how little the defenders have left. As a matter of opinion, McKellen plays the Hobbit trilogy a shade lighter and more fretful than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which suits a wizard who has not yet become the White.
