Who Plays Thorin Oakenshield?

Who Is Thorin Oakenshield?

Thorin Oakenshield is the leader of the thirteen dwarves who set out to win back the dwarf homeland beneath the Lonely Mountain, and he is credited under that name in all three Hobbit films. Richard Armitage plays him, billed third in each film: behind Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf in the first, and behind McKellen and Freeman in the second and third.

In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), directed by Peter Jackson, Thorin is the one who explains the plan to the gathered company: reach the Lonely Mountain and take it back from the dragon Smaug. Gandalf has chosen the hobbit Bilbo Baggins as the company's burglar, and Bilbo, though unsure, leaves his home to join them.

The company he leads is a large ensemble. Among the top billed cast, the dwarves are Balin (Ken Stott), Dwalin (Graham McTavish), Fili (Dean O'Gorman), Kili (Aidan Turner), Bofur (James Nesbitt), Ori (Adam Brown), Gloin (Peter Hambleton), Oin (John Callen), Dori (Mark Hadlow) and Nori (Jed Brophy). Those ten names plus Thorin make eleven of the thirteen dwarves.

Thorin also carries a personal enemy, since the Orc chieftain Azog holds a grudge against him and hunts the company from the first film onward. If you are new to the saga, the Hobbit films come first in chronological order but arrive after the original trilogy in release order, which our Lord of the Rings movies in order guide sets out in full.

Thorin Oakenshield's Story Arc Across The HobbitSpoilers

Thorin's arc moves from a proud leader who distrusts outsiders to a king undone by treasure and then redeemed in battle, and it unfolds across all three films.

In An Unexpected Journey, the company is caught by trolls, saved when Gandalf tricks the trolls into staying out until sunrise, and later hounded by Azog and his wolf riders. After a stop in Rivendell, goblins in the Misty Mountains seize the company, and Bilbo is separated from the others. When the goblins and Azog's riders trap the dwarves in the trees, Great Eagles rescue them at the last moment. On the Carrock, Thorin admits he was wrong to doubt Bilbo and treats him as a true friend. From there they see the Lonely Mountain far off, and the sleeping Smaug stirs.

In The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), the company shelters with Beorn and enters Mirkwood. Wood-elves led by Tauriel and Legolas take the dwarves to King Thranduil, who imprisons Thorin after a tense confrontation. Bilbo helps them escape downriver in barrels, and the company reaches Lake-town, where the bargeman Bard smuggles them in. Bilbo then finds the hidden door into the Lonely Mountain and wakes Smaug by accident, and the dwarves' trap at the forge fails to kill the dragon.

In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), Bard kills Smaug with a black arrow, and Thorin falls under a sickness of greed. He becomes fixated on the Arkenstone and seals the dwarves inside the mountain. Elves, men and dwarves gather at the mountain, each wanting a claim to the treasure, and Bilbo gives the Arkenstone to Thranduil and Bard to try to prevent a war. Thorin's greed nearly leads to bloodshed, but when the orcs arrive he recovers his honor and joins the fight.

Thorin Oakenshield's Allies, Rivals and Enemies

Thorin's key relationships are with Bilbo, Gandalf, his company, the elf king Thranduil and the Orc chieftain Azog, and each one shapes a different stage of his arc.

Bilbo is the central bond. Thorin begins as Bilbo's doubter and ends as his friend, and the turning point is the Carrock in the first film, where Thorin admits he was wrong. The bond is tested in the third film when Bilbo hands the Arkenstone to Thranduil and Bard to try to prevent a war. The films present it as a friendship that survives that betrayal and ends in peace between the two.

Gandalf sets the quest in motion by bringing the dwarves to Bilbo's door and choosing the hobbit as burglar. He guides the company to Rivendell and to Beorn, and he is absent for long stretches of the later films, held prisoner in Dol Guldur while Thorin's judgment worsens. For more on the wizard, see Gandalf.

Thranduil is the rival. In the second film he imprisons Thorin after a tense confrontation, and in the third he stands at the mountain with the elves, wanting a claim to the treasure. Lee Pace plays him.

Azog is the enemy who hunts Thorin from the start, and the grudge is personal. Bolg, Azog's son, takes up the hunt in the second film.

The dwarf king after Thorin is Dain Ironfoot, played by Billy Connolly, who takes the throne at the end of the third film. Fili and Kili, two of Thorin's company, stay close to him through the quest.

How Does Thorin Oakenshield Die?Spoilers

Thorin Oakenshield dies of mortal wounds at the end of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), after he kills Azog in the fight, and he makes peace with Bilbo before the end.

When the orcs arrive at Erebor, Thorin recovers his honor and joins the battle. Fili and Kili die in the fighting. Thorin kills Azog and is mortally wounded, while Legolas kills Bolg, and the Great Eagles arrive and turn the battle. So, who killed Thorin Oakenshield? The film shows him dying of wounds taken in the battle where he kills Azog, rather than at the hands of one named killer.

Before he dies, Thorin makes peace with Bilbo. Afterward, Dain becomes king under the mountain, and Bilbo returns to the Shire and keeps his ring. Years later, Gandalf visits Bilbo on his 111th birthday, which links the story to The Lord of the Rings.

Did Thorin's bloodline end? On screen, it is hard to argue otherwise. Fili and Kili, the two members of his company who stay closest to him, die in the same battle, and the crown passes to Dain Ironfoot (Billy Connolly). The plot of the third film names no child of Thorin who could claim the throne, so the line of kings he hoped to restore does not continue through him in the films.

Thorin Oakenshield's Best Moments

In my opinion, Thorin's best scenes are the ones where the film lets his pride crack, and four of them stand out across the trilogy.

The first is the Carrock in An Unexpected Journey. After the eagles set the company down, Thorin admits he was wrong to doubt Bilbo, and it works because the film has made that doubt understandable up to that point. It is the moment the relationship becomes the spine of the trilogy.

The second is the confrontation with Thranduil in The Desolation of Smaug. Thorin is imprisoned, and the scene sets up the old grievance between dwarves and elves that returns, at full strength, outside the mountain in the third film. It could be argued that this is where Armitage most clearly plays Thorin as a leader who would rather lose everything than ask for help.

The third is the sealing of the dwarves inside the mountain in The Battle of the Five Armies. Thorin's fixation on the Arkenstone is the cleanest picture of the greed sickness the film is about, and it makes his later return to the fight more than a rescue.

The fourth is his farewell to Bilbo. Perhaps the most telling detail is how small the scene is compared with the battle around it. For production context, the trilogy's principal photography ran 266 days and ended on 6 July 2012, according to RNZ, and the three films were shot back to back, which may help explain how consistent Armitage's Thorin feels across them. Paradoxically, the character who is hardest to like for most of the third film is the one the ending asks you to miss.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Thorin Oakenshield?

Richard Armitage plays Thorin Oakenshield in all three Hobbit films: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). Peter Jackson directed all three, and Armitage is billed third in each.

Who killed Thorin Oakenshield?

Thorin kills the Orc chieftain Azog in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and is mortally wounded in the same fight. He makes peace with Bilbo before he dies, and the film shows him dying of battle wounds rather than naming a single killer.

Why was Thorin killed off?

Any answer is a reading of the story rather than a stated reason. His arc runs from pride to a sickness of greed to reconciliation with Bilbo, and his death after recovering his honor in battle closes that arc.

What are the 13 dwarves' names in The Hobbit?

Thorin leads the company, and the dwarves among the top billed cast are Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Bofur, Ori, Gloin, Oin, Dori and Nori. Those ten names plus Thorin make eleven of the thirteen dwarves.

Who is the dwarf king after Thorin, and did Thorin's bloodline end?

Dain Ironfoot, played by Billy Connolly, becomes king under the Lonely Mountain at the end of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Thorin, Fili and Kili die in the battle, and the films name no child of Thorin to inherit the throne, so his line effectively ends on screen.

Was Thorin in love with Bilbo?

The films present their bond as a friendship. Thorin doubts Bilbo at first, admits he was wrong on the Carrock in the first film, and is reconciled with him as he dies in the third. Any romantic reading is a fan interpretation, not something the films state.
