Dr. Zaius: The Orangutan Leader of Planet of the Apes

Dr. Zaius is the orangutan who holds authority over the talking apes of Ape City, played by Maurice Evans in Planet of the Apes (1968) and again in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). He sees the astronaut Taylor as a danger to ape beliefs and opposes him, yet the cave in the Forbidden Zone shows that Zaius has known the truth about the planet for years.

Who Is Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes?

Dr. Zaius is the orangutan who leads Ape City, the settlement of talking apes that takes the astronaut Taylor prisoner in Planet of the Apes (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. Maurice Evans plays him there and again in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), directed by Ted Post.

The society he leads is divided by species. Gorillas hunt humans on horseback, chimpanzees such as Zira and Cornelius work as scientists, and an orangutan holds the top position. So, if you are asking who the orangutan doctor in Planet of the Apes is, it is Zaius, and the films present him as the guardian of what the apes are allowed to believe. He leads ape society and he defends its beliefs.

He belongs to the original saga. Tim Burton's standalone remake, Planet of the Apes (2001), centers on the brutal chimpanzee General Thade. The modern run from Rise of the Planet of the Apes to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has its own orangutans, Maurice and Raka, but they are different characters. For the wider cast of apes, the Planet of the Apes characters page and the apes guide set them side by side.

Dr. Zaius Across the Films: Story ArcSpoilers

Across Planet of the Apes (1968) and Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Zaius moves from the ape who opposes Taylor to the ape who admits what he has hidden. In the first film, Zira and Cornelius treat Taylor after he is shot in the throat and come to suspect he is intelligent. Zaius sees Taylor as a threat to ape society and its beliefs. Taylor regains his voice and speaks in front of the apes. At a hearing he learns that his fellow astronaut Landon has been lobotomized, and with help from Zira, Cornelius and Lucius he flees with the mute woman Nova into the Forbidden Zone.

Zaius follows with soldiers, and this is where the character is defined. Taylor holds him at gunpoint, and Zaius shows him a cave containing evidence of an older human civilization. He admits he has long known the truth, then destroys the evidence. He lets Taylor and Nova go on, warning him not to look for answers. Taylor rides along the shoreline and finds the half buried Statue of Liberty, which tells him the planet is a future Earth ruined by nuclear war.

In Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Taylor vanishes in the Forbidden Zone, and a second astronaut, Brent, reaches Ape City. General Ursus rallies the apes to invade the Forbidden Zone, over the objections of Zaius. Brent is treated by Cornelius and Zira, who tell him about Taylor, and he and Nova escape into a cave that proves to be a ruined subway station. Below the city, telepathic mutant humans worship an old atomic bomb. The apes invade their underground city, and Zaius is present for the climax, because Taylor is wounded while confronting him.

Dr. Zaius and the Other Characters

Zaius is defined by his opposition to Taylor, played by Charlton Heston and covered on the Taylor page. The astronaut is the one human who speaks, and for Zaius that makes him the one human who matters. Their scene at gunpoint in the Forbidden Zone is where Zaius shows Taylor the cave, and it is the point where the film turns from a chase into a revelation.

His closest friction among the apes is with the chimpanzee scientists. Zira (Kim Hunter) and Cornelius help Taylor and Nova flee, working against what Zaius wants. Kim Hunter returns as Zira in Beneath, and Cornelius is played there by David Watson. You can read more on Zira and Cornelius. The relationship works as a contrast: they follow curiosity, while he guards a settled version of history.

In Beneath the Planet of the Apes the opposition shifts to General Ursus (James Gregory), who pushes for the invasion of the Forbidden Zone while Zaius objects. That puts Zaius in an unexpected light, since he is the ape arguing against war. Nova (Linda Harrison) appears in both films, and the Nova page follows her through the saga.

What Happens to Dr. Zaius?Spoilers

Zaius is last seen alive in Planet of the Apes (1968), where he lets Taylor and Nova ride on. After the cave scene he stays behind in the Forbidden Zone, while Taylor reaches the wrecked Statue of Liberty and learns the truth Zaius had spent years guarding. It is a quiet exit for a man who earlier answered to the Ape National Assembly, whose hearing treated Taylor as a danger to be managed rather than a visitor to be heard.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) ends his story with the world itself. Zaius is among the apes who march against the mutant humans, and the confrontation that wounds Taylor involves him directly. Taylor then triggers the doomsday weapon, and the planet is destroyed. The plot shows no separate death scene for Zaius, so the reliable answer is that the blast ends the ape society he led, and he is not seen again.

That world is gone by the time of Escape from the Planet of the Apes, where Cornelius, Zira and Dr. Milo leave in the repaired spaceship just before Earth is destroyed. For the order of these films, see the Planet of the Apes movies in order and the Planet of the Apes timeline.

Best Dr. Zaius Moments

My pick for his best scene is the confrontation in the Forbidden Zone cave in Planet of the Apes (1968). In my opinion it works because the film gives the antagonist the better argument. Taylor holds the gun, yet it is Zaius who knows what the cave means, and the moment he destroys the evidence is, to my mind, the most unsettling beat of the film.

Second is his warning as he lets Taylor go, because it reframes him. Until then he looks like a stern official. Afterwards he looks like someone who has spent years guarding something he cannot bear to say aloud. It could be argued that this suits a character whose power comes from knowing more than the people in the room.

Third is his stance in Beneath the Planet of the Apes, where Ursus rallies the apes to invade the Forbidden Zone and Zaius objects. It is a smaller beat, but it complicates the easy reading of him as the tyrant. If you want one character to show how this saga treats authority, he is the one to watch, and the original versus reboot comparison shows how the later films handle the same idea with Caesar.
