Cornelius Planet of the Apes: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Cornelius in Planet of the Apes is a chimpanzee scientist in Ape City, played by Roddy McDowall in Planet of the Apes (1968) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), who is married to Zira and is the father of Caesar. The name then passes down the family, because Caesar's own son is also called Cornelius in the later films.

Who Plays Cornelius II?

Who Is Cornelius on the Planet of the Apes?

Cornelius is a chimpanzee scientist in Ape City who befriends the human astronaut George Taylor, and he is one of the few characters to appear across several films of the original run. He is introduced in Planet of the Apes (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, where he and his partner Zira treat Taylor after the gorillas shoot him in the throat. The two chimpanzees suspect that the silent human in front of them is intelligent, and that suspicion drives the first half of the film.

The actor most associated with him is Roddy McDowall, who plays Cornelius in the 1968 film and again in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), directed by Don Taylor. Other performers take the role elsewhere: David Watson plays Cornelius in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), directed by Ted Post. McDowall, as it happens, goes on to play Cornelius's son Caesar, so the same face carries the family across generations.

A second Cornelius exists in the credits. Caesar has a son called Cornelius, credited as Cornelius II in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) and as Cornelius in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001), Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024), directed by Wes Ball, do not feature a character called Cornelius among their leading billed cast, so the 2024 film is not a place to look for him.

Cornelius Across the Films: His Story ArcSpoilers

Cornelius moves from treating a wounded astronaut in Ape City to living as a fugitive parent in 1973, and his name then resurfaces for Caesar's son in two more films. His arc is easiest to follow in release order, which you can check against the Planet of the Apes movies in order guide.

Planet of the Apes (1968). Cornelius and Zira treat the wounded Taylor in Ape City and come to suspect he can think and reason. The orangutan leader Dr. Zaius sees Taylor as a threat to ape society and its beliefs. At a hearing Taylor learns that Landon has been lobotomised, and with help from Zira, Cornelius and Lucius, Taylor and the mute woman Nova flee into the Forbidden Zone.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). Played here by David Watson, Cornelius treats the wounded astronaut Brent alongside Zira and tells him about Taylor, who has vanished. Zira then helps Brent and Nova escape into a cave that turns out to be a ruined subway station, as General Ursus pushes the apes towards invading the Forbidden Zone.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971). This is his largest role. Cornelius, Zira and Dr. Milo repair Taylor's spaceship and escape just before Earth is destroyed, and a time warp lands them in Los Angeles in 1973. The zoo scientists Stephanie Branton and Lewis Dixon take an interest in them, and a presidential commission questions them. The government first welcomes them as guests, so they become celebrities, until the President's science advisor, Dr. Hasslein, learns that Zira is pregnant and grows afraid of what the apes' descendants might mean for humanity.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). The name returns for Caesar's son, Cornelius II, played by Bobby Porter. He is caught in the coup staged by the gorilla Aldo against Caesar's gentle rule.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). In the modern run, Devyn Dalton is credited as Cornelius, Caesar's son. The film ends with Maurice promising that Cornelius will learn what his father did.

Cornelius, Zira and Caesar: His Family

Cornelius is the husband of Zira, the father of Caesar, and the first of several characters to carry his name. His wife is the chimpanzee Zira, played by Kim Hunter, who appears beside him in the 1968 film, Beneath and Escape. If you are searching for the Cornelius Planet of the Apes wife, that is the answer, and in Escape the pair are billed first and second.

His son is Caesar. In Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), directed by J. Lee Thompson, Caesar is introduced as the talking son of Cornelius and Zira, hidden from childhood by the circus owner Armando. As for the question of breed, Caesar is a chimpanzee, as both of his parents are chimpanzees. In Escape, Zira names her baby Milo, and she secretly swaps him with another ape's baby, so the child who is later hunted is not her own.

His other bonds are with George Taylor and Dr. Zaius. Cornelius helps Taylor, while Zaius guards the ape faith and, as the 1968 film shows, has long known the truth Taylor is searching for. Dr. Milo, a fellow chimpanzee, and Lucius, who also helps Taylor flee in 1968, are minor figures, but Milo's death at the hands of a zoo gorilla in Escape is the first sign that the time travelers are not safe.

The later Cornelius has a different set of relatives. In Battle he is Caesar's son and in War he is Caesar's son again, with Maurice, the orangutan who stays beside Caesar, promising to pass on the story. For the wider cast and how the roles were recast, see Planet of the Apes cast.

What Happened to Cornelius? His Death ExplainedSpoilers

The original Cornelius dies at a shipyard near the end of Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), shot by a sniper just after he kills Dr. Hasslein. The path there begins with a slip of the tongue by Zira, who admits to having dissected humans. Under truth serum, the commission hears about her experiments and what she knows of Taylor, and it then orders her pregnancy ended and both apes sterilized. Cornelius lashes out at an orderly who sneers at their unborn child, and the man turns out to have died from the blow. Hasslein seizes on this to call for their execution, though the President wants them kept alive.

Stephanie Branton and Lewis Dixon get the couple out to Armando's circus, where Zira gives birth and names the boy Milo. Hasslein keeps combing circuses and zoos, so Armando pushes them to move on, and Dixon conceals them at a shipyard, giving Cornelius a pistol before he leaves. Hasslein tracks them down and fires at Zira and the infant. Cornelius shoots Hasslein dead, and the sniper's bullet ends Cornelius, with Zira dying at his side. The catch is that the infant who was killed was not her son, because she had quietly swapped babies. The real child lives on with Armando and begins to talk, which opens the way to Conquest.

Caesar's son, the second Cornelius, has his own end in Battle for the Planet of the Apes, where he is killed when Aldo seizes power in a coup. War for the Planet of the Apes uses the name differently: after Caesar dies, Maurice promises that Cornelius will be told what his father did. Neither Rise of the Planet of the Apes nor Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes follows that line on screen, so what became of the later Cornelius is never shown. For the events that come after Caesar, see the Planet of the Apes timeline.

Best Moments for Cornelius

In my opinion, Cornelius works best when he is the decent scientist standing between Taylor and the gorillas, and the 1968 film is where that is clearest. His strongest stretch is the escape, where he and Zira, having come to suspect that Taylor can reason, help him and Nova flee into the Forbidden Zone while Zaius sees Taylor as a threat to ape society. It is a cautious, bureaucratic kind of courage, because they risk the very establishment that employs them.

The second pick is his arrival in 1973 in Escape. The comic surprise of two chimpanzees in a Los Angeles zoo, being studied by Branton and Dixon, is what makes the later tragedy hit. It could be argued that Escape is the most underrated film of the original run, because it turns a science fiction twist into a story about a family. That said, it also gives Cornelius his only real moment of rage, when he knocks down the orderly, and it shows how quickly a welcome becomes a hunt.

The third pick is the shipyard. The sniper shot is abrupt, and Zira's death beside him gives the film its weight. The reveal that the dead baby was a swap, and that the surviving child is Caesar's origin, is one of the neatest retcon style hand overs in the saga.
