Zira Planet of the Apes: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her
Zira in Planet of the Apes is a chimpanzee scientist played by Kim Hunter in three films: Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), where she is credited as Dr. Zira. In the original films she is the wife of Cornelius and the mother of the ape leader Caesar, and she dies at the end of Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
Who Plays Dr. Zira?
Who Is Dr. Zira in Planet of the Apes?
Dr. Zira is a chimpanzee scientist who treats the human astronaut George Taylor in Ape City, and she is played by Kim Hunter in every film she appears in. The credits use "Zira" for Planet of the Apes (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, and for Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), directed by Ted Post. In Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), directed by Don Taylor, she is billed as "Dr. Zira". Kim Hunter is billed third in the first film and second in the other two.
Zira and her husband Cornelius are the chimpanzee scientists who treat Taylor and come to suspect that he is intelligent. The two work together throughout the original run.
She does not appear in the other films. Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001) is a standalone remake with a different chimpanzee, Ari, who sympathizes with humans. The modern run, from Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024), tells a separate story in which Caesar is the son of a lab chimpanzee named Bright Eyes. Zira's Story Across the Original FilmsSpoilers
Zira's story runs through three films, and in each one she is the scientist who chooses to help the humans. In Planet of the Apes (1968), she and Cornelius treat Taylor after he is shot in the throat and come to suspect that he is intelligent. The orangutan leader Dr. Zaius sees Taylor as a threat to ape society and its beliefs. Zira and Cornelius, with help from Lucius, then help Taylor and the mute woman Nova flee into the Forbidden Zone.
In Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Zira and Cornelius treat the wounded astronaut Brent and tell him about Taylor. Brent and Nova are captured, and Zira helps them escape into a cave that turns out to be a ruined subway station. That is how Brent learns he is on a devastated future Earth.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes gives her the most to do. Zira, Cornelius and Dr. Milo repair Taylor's spaceship and flee just before Earth is destroyed. A time warp throws them into 1973 Los Angeles, where they are placed in the zoo and observed by Stephanie Branton and Lewis Dixon. A presidential commission questions them, and the government at first welcomes them as guests. They become celebrities, until the President's science advisor, Dr. Hasslein, learns that Zira is pregnant. At a hearing she lets slip that she once dissected humans, and a truth serum draws out her experiments and her knowledge of Taylor. The commission orders her pregnancy ended and both apes sterilized, and the pair escape to a circus run by Armando, where she gives birth to a son.
Zira's Family and Allies: Cornelius, Caesar and Dr. Zaius
Zira's closest bond is with her husband Cornelius, and the sequels build on that pairing. Roddy McDowall plays Cornelius in Planet of the Apes (1968) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes, while in Beneath the Planet of the Apes the part is credited to David Watson.
Her son is the answer to a common question: is Caesar the son of Zira? Yes. In Escape, Zira gives birth to a boy she names Milo, and she secretly swaps him for another circus ape's baby before the shipyard confrontation. The child who survives with Armando begins to speak, and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes describes Caesar as the talking son of Cornelius and Zira, hidden since childhood by Armando. This applies only to the original series. The modern Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, has a different origin.
Her relationship with Dr. Zaius is more complicated. Zaius is the orangutan who knows the truth about the past and destroys the evidence in the cave, while Zira, with Cornelius and Lucius, helps Taylor and Nova flee before Zaius follows with soldiers. Is Dr. Zaius a good guy? In my opinion, he is neither villain nor hero: he lets Taylor and Nova go on, yet he buries the proof that humans once ruled, so he protects ape society at the cost of the truth.
She also has ties to the human side of the story. Taylor owes her his escape, and in Escape the scientists Branton and Dixon help her and Cornelius get away, with Dixon hiding them at a shipyard.
What Happened to Zira? Why Zira and Cornelius Were KilledSpoilers
Zira dies at the shipyard at the end of Escape from the Planet of the Apes, shot by Dr. Hasslein, and her death is the direct result of his fear of what her descendants might mean for humanity. The commission had already ordered her pregnancy ended and both apes sterilized. After Cornelius knocked down an orderly who mocked their unborn child, the orderly turned out to be dead, and Hasslein used that to demand their execution, although the President insisted they be taken alive.
As Hasslein searched the circuses and zoos, Armando urged the apes to leave, and Dixon hid them at a shipyard and handed Cornelius a pistol. Hasslein found them, shot Zira and the baby she was holding, and Cornelius killed Hasslein. A sniper then killed Cornelius. Zira threw the baby into the water and died beside her husband while Dixon and Branton watched.
The twist is that the baby who died was not hers. She had secretly swapped her son with another ape's, so the real Milo lives on with Armando and speaks, which sets up Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Beneath the Planet of the Apes ends with the planet destroyed, and Escape then begins with Zira, Cornelius and Dr. Milo fleeing in the repaired spaceship just before Earth is destroyed.
Zira's Best Moments in Planet of the Apes
Zira's best scenes are the ones where a scientist's curiosity gets her into trouble, and in my opinion Kim Hunter is most effective when she plays that curiosity as kindness rather than defiance. The first is her work on Taylor in Planet of the Apes (1968). After he is wounded in the throat she keeps treating him, and she and Cornelius come to suspect that a human might think. That choice drives the film, because it leads to the moment when Taylor regains his voice and speaks in front of the apes.
The second is the escape in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Zira helps Brent and Nova flee into a cave, and in doing so she sends Brent into a ruined subway station, where he realizes he is on a devastated future Earth. It is a small act with large consequences.
The third is the hearing in Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Zira's slip about dissecting humans is a sharp piece of writing, because it shows an affectionate character who is also a product of her own society. It could be argued that this complexity makes her the best-drawn ape of the original run, and her final scene by the water, with the baby swap revealed, is where the film earns its ending.
