Who Plays Proximus Caesar?
Who Is Proximus Caesar in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?
Proximus Caesar is the ape king who rules a coastal kingdom in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024), directed by Wes Ball, and Kevin Durand plays him. The film is set many generations after the death of Caesar, in a world where apes dominate the Earth and most humans have become wild and mute. Proximus is credited under that single name, and his title is the only echo of the earlier saga.
His story begins at a distance from the audience. His soldiers, led by the gorilla Sylva (Eka Darville), raid and burn the village of the young chimpanzee Noa, played by Owen Teague. Noa's father Koro is killed and the clan is taken away. Proximus has enslaved many clans to force open a sealed human vault, which he believes holds powerful technology. He also keeps a human advisor, Trevathan, played by William H. Macy, who tells Noa about the human past.
Kevin Durand is billed third in the cast, after Teague and Freya Allan. Proximus is the main antagonist of the tenth film in the franchise's release order. For the wider cast, see the Planet of the Apes cast page, and for the other apes of the saga see Planet of the Apes characters.

Proximus Caesar's Story in Kingdom of the Planet of the ApesSpoilers
Proximus Caesar drives the plot of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) long before he appears on screen, because every step of Noa's journey follows the damage his soldiers have done. The burned village and the missing clan point Noa toward the coast. On the road he is guided by the orangutan Raka, played by Peter Macon, who passes on Caesar's original ideas, and the two cross paths with the human scavenger Mae. Raka is lost saving her, and Noa and Mae end up as prisoners in Proximus's seaside domain.
Inside that domain, Proximus is a ruler with one obsession: the sealed human vault. He has put whole clans to work on it, and Trevathan, his human advisor, explains to Noa what the old world left behind. Noa and Mae then plan a sabotage. Trevathan catches them with the charges and Mae kills him. The blast floods the vault area, and the captives walk free through the chaos. Proximus loses the prize he wanted and the labor he used to chase it.
The last stretch is Noa's counterattack. After Sylva is left behind in the rising water, Noa brings his clan and their eagles to the cliffs. Proximus falls into the sea there, and his kingdom ends with him. Noa takes his people home to rebuild, while Mae heads off to restart a human satellite base.
Proximus Caesar and Caesar: Is He Related?
No, Proximus Caesar is not shown to be related to Caesar: nothing in the plot of Kingdom connects them beyond the shared name. Caesar is the ape of Rise, Dawn and War, and the film places Proximus generations after his death.
Proximus's closest working relationship is with Sylva, the gorilla who leads his raiders and burns Noa's village. Sylva is trapped in the flooding bunker by Noa. Trevathan, the human advisor played by William H. Macy, is the other figure close to the throne. He tells Noa about the human past, and he dies when Mae kills him after he catches the two planting charges.
His link to Noa is that of the ruler whose raiders killed Koro and took the clan. Proximus also holds the enslaved clans who are forced to work on the vault. Mae, played by Freya Allan, wants something from the vault, and Noa agrees to help her. For the ape who carried the name before him, see Caesar.
Does Proximus Caesar Die? His Fate ExplainedSpoilers
Proximus Caesar is defeated at the end of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes when he falls from a cliff into the sea during Noa's attack. The film shows the fall as the end of his rule. The enslaved clans are freed and Noa leads his people home.
No later film has been released, so there is nothing to show whether he returns. The next Apes film is untitled and in development at 20th Century Studios, with Matt Shakman directing and Josh Friedman writing, according to TheWrap. TheWrap reports that it is a new original story and not a sequel to Kingdom, and it gives no release date. The next Planet of the Apes film page tracks what has been reported.
In the wider timeline, his story sits at the latest point in the saga. For the order of events see the Planet of the Apes timeline.
Proximus Caesar's Best Moments
In my opinion, the strongest use of Proximus is the way the film lets his kingdom do the talking before he does. The burned village, the enslaved clans and the sealed vault all establish his appetite for technology, so by the time Noa reaches the coast the idea of him has done much of the work.
The flooding of the vault is the set piece I would point to first. It turns the thing Proximus wants most into the means of his clans' escape, and it gives Noa the opening to trap Sylva. It could be argued that this is the cleanest piece of plotting in the film, because the villain's goal and his downfall are the same object.
The finale on the cliff, with Noa's clan and their eagles against his forces, is the other moment that stays with me. It pays off the eagle bond set up in the opening scenes, and it ends with Proximus falling into the sea. That being said, readers who want a villain with the depth of Koba in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes may find Proximus thinner, and for that I would point them to Koba.

FAQs
Who plays Proximus Caesar, and is he related to Caesar?

Does Proximus Caesar die in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?
He falls from a cliff into the sea when Noa leads his clan and their eagles against him, which ends his rule. No later film has been released, so his story has not continued on screen.
Who is Caesar's family in Planet of the Apes?
In Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar is the talking son of Cornelius and Zira. In the modern films his mate is Cornelia and his son Blue Eyes appears in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Proximus Caesar is not presented as part of that family.
Who wins, Koba or Caesar?
Caesar wins. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes he fights Koba at the top of the tower and lets him fall to his death, after declaring that Koba is no longer an ape.
Is Caesar the ape good or bad?
The films present Caesar as a leader who tries to avoid killing. In Dawn he refuses to strike first against the humans, and in War he refuses to kill the Colonel, who then ends his own life. In Conquest he chooses to spare Governor Breck in the released cut.
What happened to Caesar from Planet of the Apes?
In War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar sends his tribe toward a possible new refuge, is wounded by a crossbow bolt, and sets off a fuel tank whose explosion causes an avalanche that buries the attacking soldiers. The surviving apes reach the refuge, and Caesar dies there from his wound, after a quiet last moment with Maurice.
