What Is the Story of Saw (2004)?

Saw (2004) follows two strangers who wake up in a filthy bathroom, each chained by the ankle to a pipe, with a dead man lying on the floor between them. Photographer Adam and oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon find that the corpse holds a revolver and a microcassette recorder. Tapes tell Adam to survive, and tell Lawrence that he must kill Adam by 6:00 or his wife and daughter will die.

As the two men talk, they work out that their captor is the Jigsaw Killer, who tests people's will to live through deadly games. Hacksaws found in the toilet cistern hint at how they might get free. If you are new to the saga, the full list of films sits on the Saw movies page.

Saw 2004 Soundtrack: Score, Album and Songs

Charlie Clouser composed the score for Saw (2004), and the soundtrack album "Saw" came out on KOCH Records on October 5, 2004, running to 14 tracks. Clouser went on to score every film in the franchise, so this first album is where the saga's sound begins, and it sits alongside a handful of songs from industrial, metal and rock acts.

The film is set largely in one bathroom, where two chained strangers have a few hours to solve Jigsaw's game, and that confinement leaves the score to build most of the tension. Clouser's music is the thread that runs through the later sequels as well, including Saw X (2023), directed by Kevin Greutert.

The songs credited to the film are:

  • "Bite the Hand That Bleeds" by Fear Factory
  • "Stürm" by Front Line Assembly
  • "Action" by Enemy
  • "You Make Me Feel So Dead" by Pitbull Daycare
  • "Wonderful World" by Psychopomps

For Clouser's later scores and the songs used in the sequels, see the Saw soundtrack page.

Saw 2004 Plot: The Entire Story, Start to FinishSpoilers

The full story of Saw (2004) runs on two tracks, the bathroom in the present and a set of flashbacks that explain why these two men were chosen. Spoilers follow for the whole film.

In the bathroom, each man has a tape with instructions. Lawrence has until 6:00 to kill Adam, or his wife Alison and daughter Diana will be murdered. A flashback shows Lawrence questioned by detectives Tapp and Sing, who found his penlight at a Jigsaw crime scene. He was cleared, but he had seen the testimony of Amanda, a rare survivor of Jigsaw's traps. Tapp and Sing later found Jigsaw's warehouse, where Jigsaw escaped after badly wounding Tapp, and Sing died in a shotgun trap.

In the present, Alison and Diana are held captive in their apartment while the captor watches the bathroom on a hidden camera. Adam admits that Tapp paid him to spy on Lawrence, and Lawrence reveals that he had an affair, which is why he was chosen. Adam recognizes the captor from a photo as Zep Hindle, a hospital orderly.

When Lawrence does not kill Adam, Zep moves to murder the family. Alison fights back, and Tapp arrives and saves them. Tapp chases Zep into the sewers and is shot in the chest. Back in the bathroom, Lawrence hears only gunshots and believes his family is dead. He saws off his own foot and shoots Adam. Zep then enters to finish Lawrence, but Adam survived the shot and beats Zep to death with the toilet tank lid. Lawrence crawls out to find help.

Adam finds a tape showing that Zep was also a victim, forced to obey Jigsaw to get an antidote to a slow poison. Then the supposed corpse stands up and is revealed as John Kramer, the real Jigsaw. He tells Adam that the key to his chain went down the drain when Adam emptied the tub. Adam tries to shoot him, but Kramer shocks him through the chain, leaves and seals the door, abandoning Adam to die.

When Was Saw 2004 Released?

Saw (2004) opened in US theaters on October 29, 2004, after premiering on January 19, 2004, in Park City, Utah, where it played the Sundance Film Festival as a midnight movie. Lionsgate had bought worldwide rights to the film just before that screening, according to Screen Daily.

The UK got the film first on October 1, 2004, and Australia opened on December 2, 2004. Those dates are reported by Box Office Mojo, The Numbers and TMDB. The ratings are R in the US, 18 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia.

Saw 2004 Ending Explained: The Twist and What It MeansSpoilers

The twist in Saw (2004) is that the dead man on the bathroom floor is John Kramer, the real Jigsaw, who has been in the room with Adam and Lawrence from the start. Full spoilers follow, and the verdict here is my own opinion.

What actually happens? Lawrence crawls out wounded to find help, and Adam is left chained in the sealed room after Kramer stands up, shocks him through the chain and locks the door. Kramer says the key to Adam's chain went down the drain when Adam emptied the tub, so Adam's own panic closed off his way out. The film ends without telling us whether Lawrence survives.

Why does it work? In my opinion, it works because the film hides Jigsaw in the one place the audience stops looking. We spend 103 minutes watching two men, a camera on a wall and a captor in an apartment, and the body in the middle of the frame becomes furniture. It could be argued that this is the cleverest use of the single bathroom set, since the cheap setting supplies the trick as well as the dread.

The second reveal, that Zep Hindle was a victim forced to obey in return for an antidote, matters just as much. It shows Jigsaw does not trust his own tests to be fair to the people he uses, and it mirrors Lawrence, who is also pushed into hurting someone to save his family. I would add that Lawrence's open ending was resolved later: Saw 3D shows Dr. Gordon survived the bathroom trap, which you can read about under Saw 3D. Kramer's own story is then filled in by Saw X, which is set between Saw and Saw II, and the Saw timeline explained shows where each piece fits.

Where Was Saw 2004 Filmed?

Saw (2004) was filmed in Los Angeles, California, at the Lacy Street Production Facility. Principal photography began on September 22, 2003, and lasted 18 days.

The bathroom was the only set built for the film. Its scenes took six days to shoot and were filmed in story order. For a film that grossed more than $100 million, the shoot was short and the set list was small.

Saw 2004 Trivia

Saw (2004) was shot in 18 days on a single built set, and that limit shaped the film. Several of these production details also reveal the ending.

  • Cinematographer David A. Armstrong shot the film handheld on his shoulder, without a dolly or tripod.
  • The bathroom scenes were shot in story order over six days, on the only set built for the film.
  • James Wan and Leigh Whannell first made a short film from the jaw trap scene, with Whannell playing David, and used it to attract the producers who formed Twisted Pictures.
  • Lionsgate bought worldwide rights just before the film played Sundance as a midnight movie.
  • The production company credited by Screen Daily is Evolution Management, and the producers are Gregg Hoffman, Oren Koules and Mark Burg.
  • Tobin Bell spent six days filming on the floor for the climactic reveal, and his casting is described as almost accidental.
  • The shoot began on September 22, 2003.
