John Kramer in Saw: Who Jigsaw Is and Who Plays Him
John Kramer in Saw is the Jigsaw Killer, played by Tobin Bell in nine films from Saw (2004), directed by James Wan, to Saw X (2023), directed by Kevin Greutert. He dies at the end of Saw III, yet he keeps shaping the story through tapes, apprentices and flashbacks, and Saw X is set between the first two films.
Who Plays Jigsaw / John Kramer?
Who Is John Kramer in Saw?
John Kramer is the Jigsaw Killer, the man behind the traps that drive the whole saga, and Tobin Bell has played him in nine films. The credits use several names for him: Jigsaw in Saw (2004), Jigsaw / John from Saw II through Saw 3D, Jigsaw / John Kramer in Jigsaw (2017) and plain John Kramer in Saw X. In the story he is a man who tests people's will to live through deadly games, and he explains each test on a recording that tells the victim what to do and what it will cost.
The first film shows the method clearly. Photographer Adam and oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon wake in a filthy bathroom, each chained by the ankle to a pipe, with a dead man on the floor between them holding a revolver and a microcassette recorder. The tapes tell Adam to survive, and they tell Lawrence to kill Adam by 6:00 or his wife and daughter will die. Hacksaws found in the toilet cistern hint at the price of escape, and that price is the pattern for everything that follows.
If you are new to the series, the easiest route is the Saw movies in order guide, and the full list of players sits on the Saw characters page. One more point of context: Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a spin-off that follows a new killer working in Jigsaw's style, so it is a story about his legacy rather than a John Kramer film.

John Kramer's Story Arc Across the Saw FilmsSpoilers
John Kramer's arc runs from a hidden mastermind in the first film to a dying man, then a voice from beyond the grave, and finally a more vulnerable figure in Saw X. In Saw 2004, he lies on the bathroom floor as the supposed corpse, stands up after Lawrence has crawled away, shocks Adam through his chain, walks out and seals the door.
In Saw 2, police arrest him at a factory, and he calmly tells Detective Eric Matthews to sit and talk while a nerve gas fills a house holding eight captives, including Eric's son Daniel. The film also reveals that Amanda, a survivor of an earlier game, has become his accomplice. Saw 3 finds him in bed with terminal cancer, kept alive by Dr. Lynn Denlon, while Amanda runs a second game for Jeff, a father consumed by revenge.
His hand then reaches forward through the saga. Saw 4 opens with his autopsy, where a microcassette is found in his stomach with a message for Detective Hoffman, and flashbacks fill in how Kramer became the man behind the puzzles. Jill Tuck, his widow, talks about a past miscarriage that shaped him. Saw 5 shows Kramer forcing Hoffman to take part after learning Hoffman had killed a man named Seth. Saw 6 has Jill carry out a plan from John's will against Hoffman, and Saw 3D brings back Dr. Gordon as a new apprentice.
Jigsaw 2017, directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, is set ten years after Kramer's death. It opens with detectives Halloran and Hunt chasing Edgar Munsen, and a recording in Kramer's voice soon sets deadly tests for five strangers in a barn. Its detectives and pathologists are left wondering whether a dead man can still be running the games. Saw X then goes back to the point between the first two films, with Kramer learning he has terminal brain cancer and traveling to a clinic outside Mexico City for an experimental treatment that turns out to be a scam. He then plans to punish the people behind it, with Amanda Young's help. Fans who want the full sequence can follow the Saw timeline explained guide.
John Kramer's Relationships: Amanda, Hoffman, Jill and Gordon
John Kramer's closest relationships are with the apprentices and the victims who become part of his work, and they matter because he rarely acts alone after the first film. Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith, is the first. She survives one of his games, returns as his helper in Saw II and carries out his work in Saw III. Her story ends badly, because she admits to Lynn that she has rigged her traps so nobody could win, and John then reveals that Lynn was Amanda's real test, since he would not let a killer carry on his work. The full story is on the Amanda Young Saw page.
Detective Mark Hoffman, played by Costas Mandylor, is the second apprentice. Saw V shows that Kramer pulled him into the games after learning that Hoffman had killed Seth, and Hoffman then becomes the keeper of the legacy across Saw IV, V, VI and 3D. In Saw X he appears in a short post credit cameo, watching over Henry in a bathroom with a trap attached to his stomach. See Mark Hoffman Saw.
Jill Tuck, played by Betsy Russell, is his widow. She is the one who follows his will in Saw VI by fitting a modified reverse bear trap on Hoffman, and she is killed by that same device in Saw 3D. Dr. Lawrence Gordon, played by Cary Elwes, is the survivor of Kramer's first bathroom game and later returns as an apprentice, as the Dr Gordon Saw profile explains. Eric Matthews, played by Donnie Wahlberg, is the detective drawn into the second game, and he is covered at Eric Matthews Saw. Logan Nelson, played by Matt Passmore, is the final link: the Jigsaw film reveals that Kramer spared him ten years earlier and made him his first apprentice.
John Kramer Death: How Jigsaw Dies in Saw IIISpoilers
John Kramer dies in Saw III, when Jeff cuts his throat with a power saw, and the collar on Dr. Lynn Denlon is set off at the same moment. Jeff has just shot Amanda dead and has been offered a last choice between calling an ambulance for Lynn and taking revenge on John. Kramer's final tape tells Jeff that a girl named Corbett has been taken and that only John knows where she is, so his death leaves the next film with an open question.
His death does not end his role. Saw IV begins with his autopsy, and the microcassette found there carries on the games. Saw V, VI and 3D keep his plans moving through Hoffman, Jill and Dr. Gordon. In Jigsaw (2017), police are chasing a game attributed to a man who died ten years earlier, and Edgar Munsen is later found in John's grave.
How old was he? The films do not state his age at death, so any specific number would be a guess. What can be said is that Saw X is set between the first two films, and that the production chose not to de age Tobin Bell or Shawnee Smith, according to Yahoo News. Bell plays Kramer in that film as the man he was before Saw II.
As for a return, Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster announced in September 2026 that Mike P. Nelson will direct the next film. Details are on the Saw 11 page. TheWrap reported no release date and no filming start.
John Kramer Best Moments: Five Scenes That Define Jigsaw
The best John Kramer scenes are the ones where he is least active, and that is an opinion I will defend. In my opinion, the strongest is the end of Saw (2004), when the corpse on the bathroom floor stands up. Tobin Bell spent six days on that floor during the shoot, according to TheWrap, and the stillness is why the reveal lands. Adam and Lawrence share the room with him through every bathroom scene without knowing he is the man who put them there.
Second, the interview room in Saw II. Eric Matthews beats him, and Kramer keeps his composure, holding the room while the clock runs in the nerve gas house. It could be argued that the series never found a calmer villain than this. Third, the finale of Saw III, where Jigsaw's last test is still running after Amanda is dead and Jeff has reached him. The revelation that Lynn was Amanda's real test makes the film hold together as a puzzle.
Fourth, Saw VI, where Jill Tuck surprises Hoffman with a letter he once wrote to Amanda Young and fits the modified reverse bear trap on his head, carrying out a plan from John's will. Fifth, Saw X, where he is not the victor at first. He is a dying man who trusts the wrong people, then outplays them, and it makes the earlier films read differently on a rewatch. Anyone who prefers the traps to the character should look at the Saw traps page, and fans who like ranking can compare notes at Saw movies ranked.

FAQs
Is John Kramer a good guy in Saw?
No, though the films give him a code. John Kramer believes he is testing people rather than murdering them, but he still abducts victims and builds traps that kill. In Saw X he targets a group of con artists who cheated dying patients, which gives him a more sympathetic motive than in the other films. Whether that makes him good is left to the viewer.
How old was John Kramer when he died?
The films do not state John Kramer's age at death, so any specific number would be a guess. What they show is that he dies in Saw III from a power saw wound after Jeff reaches him, while suffering from terminal cancer.
Is John Kramer coming back?
Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster announced in September 2026, as TheWrap reported, that Mike P. Nelson will direct the next Saw film from a script by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock. No release date or filming start has been given. Kramer has returned before through tapes, flashbacks and Saw X, which is set between the first two films.
Why did John Kramer become Jigsaw?
The films tie his change to loss and illness. Saw IV, through Jill Tuck's account of a past miscarriage and flashbacks, shows the events that shaped him. Saw III shows him dying of terminal cancer, and Saw X, set between the first two films, shows him learning he has terminal brain cancer and being cheated by a fake clinic.
