What Is Saw 2 About?

Saw 2 is about a detective who arrests the Jigsaw Killer and then learns that his teenage son is locked in a house slowly filling with nerve gas. The first film, Saw (2004), kept two men chained in one filthy bathroom, so the sequel takes the same idea and spreads it across a whole building full of strangers.

The film opens with a police informant who wakes up wearing a trap on his head and dies when he cannot do what the game demands. Detective Eric Matthews, who has a rocky history with the case, is pulled to the scene and soon learns that the Jigsaw Killer has left a message for him. Eric and a SWAT team then track Jigsaw, whose real name is John Kramer, to a factory and arrest him.

The arrest does not end the game. Monitors inside the factory show eight people locked in a house filling with nerve gas, and one of them is Daniel, Eric's teenage son. John tells Eric to sit and talk with him, and he promises that Daniel will be safe if Eric does so. It is a hostage negotiation in which the man behind the hostages is already in handcuffs and still sets the rules, which is the sequel's central twist on the usual cat and mouse chase.

What Songs Are in Saw II? Soundtrack and Score

Charlie Clouser composed the score for Saw II, which appears on two releases: the score album "Saw II" from Trisol, released April 3, 2006, with 70 tracks, and "Saw II: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" from Image Entertainment, released October 25, 2005, with 15 tracks. The score album is the far larger of the two, and it is the place to hear Clouser's work for the film on its own.

Only one song has a scene on record. "Forget to Remember" by Mudvayne plays over the initial end titles, so it arrives just after the film's final twist lands. For the other songs credited to the film, no scene placement is on record, so where they sit in the running time is not something we can state.

The songs credited to Saw II are:

  • "Forget to Remember" by Mudvayne
  • "Irresponsible Hate Anthem (Venus Head Trap mix)" by Marilyn Manson
  • "Sound Effects and Over Dramatics" by The Used
  • "Blood (Empty Promises)" by Papa Roach
  • "September" by bloodsimple
  • "Rev 22:20 (Rev 4:20 mix)" by Puscifer
  • "Pieces" by Sevendust
  • "Rodent (Ken 'Hiwatt' Marshall remix/DDT mix)" by Skinny Puppy
  • "Burn the Witch (UNKLE variation)" by Queens of the Stone Age
  • "Holy" by A Band Called Pain
  • "Three Fingers" by Buckethead and Saul Williams
  • "Home Invasion Robbery" by The Legion of Doom

The lineup leans on heavy rock and industrial acts, which suits a film set largely inside a nerve gas house. For the full track lists and composer notes across the series, see the Saw soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Saw 2 Plot Summary (Full Spoilers)Spoilers

In Saw 2, the captives in the house search for antidotes to a nerve agent that will kill them in about two hours, while traps kill several of them and Eric tries to bargain with John at the factory. This summary covers the whole film, ending included.

Inside the house, the group quickly realizes that every captive except Daniel has been in prison, which hints that John chose them for a reason. Amanda, a survivor of an earlier game, works with Daniel. Xavier is the violent one in the group, and he hunts the others, killing Jonas along the way. Laura dies of the gas, and Xavier leaves Addison to die in a trap.

At the factory, Eric loses patience. He beats John and forces him to take him to the house. Eric's colleague realizes that the footage on the monitors was recorded earlier and was not live. A safe at the factory is opened and Daniel is found inside alive, having been kept in a separate place. Meanwhile, in the house, Xavier corners Amanda and Daniel, and Daniel kills him.

Eric enters the house alone, is attacked by a masked figure and ends up chained in a bathroom. A tape reveals that Amanda is John's accomplice and that the whole test was meant for Eric. She leaves him locked in the room, and he is left to die.

When Was Saw 2 Released and Where Can You Stream It?

Saw 2 opened in US and UK theaters on October 28, 2005, and in Australia on November 17, 2005, and in the US it is rated R, in the UK 18 and in Australia MA 15+. Its runtime is 93 minutes. No premiere date, city or venue for Saw II appears in studio or trade coverage of the release.

The release date follows the pattern the series set. Saw (2004) arrived on October 29, 2004, and Saw III followed on October 27, 2006, so the series settled into a late October slot early. The sequel took $87 million in the US and $60.7 million internationally, for about $148 million worldwide on a $4 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. You can see how it compares with the rest of the series on the Saw box office page.

As for streaming, Saw II is not on Netflix in the US, UK or Australia. The availability below comes from JustWatch via TMDB, checked on November 3, 2026.

Saw 2 Ending Explained: Was Amanda Acting?Spoilers

The Saw 2 ending shows that Amanda was never a simple victim, because she survived her own test, became John Kramer's helper and set up the game for Eric. Here I give my reading of what the final scenes mean, with full spoilers.

What happens. Eric is knocked out and shackled in the house's bathroom, the same room seen earlier with bodies in it, and the setup echoes the chained bathroom of Saw (2004). A recording shows that Amanda is John's accomplice. She walks out, seals the door and leaves Eric to die, while John smiles as he hears Eric's screams.

Was Amanda acting? In my opinion, yes, in the sense that she was playing a captive while working for John, though the film does not tell us how much of her fear was real. The tape says she survived her own test and became his helper, which reframes her scenes with Daniel. She helps him, and it could be argued that a Jigsaw apprentice would want his son alive, since the real target is Eric.

Why the factory scenes matter. Eric's colleague realizes that the footage on the monitors was recorded earlier and not live, so what Eric watched was never a real time view of the house. Eric's mistake is that he stops talking and starts hitting, which is exactly what the game was built to provoke. A stubborn detective was always going to leave the table.

Where it leads. The last scene sets up Amanda as the apprentice who will carry on the work, and she becomes a major figure in Saw III, where Eric gets out of the bathroom trap. If you want the wider picture, the Saw timeline explained page puts the reveal in context, and Saw II is third in chronological order because Saw X is set between the first two films.

Where Was Saw II Filmed?

Saw II was filmed in Toronto, Canada, with principal photography at Cinespace Film Studios between May 2 and June 6, 2005. That is about 25 days of shooting, against the 18 day shoot of Saw (2004).

Much of the work happened on a single stage. Production designer David Hackl built 27 sets there over three weeks, including the needle pit set that used about 120,000 modified syringes.

Saw IV was also filmed in Toronto. If you want to compare how the traps are staged across the saga, the Saw traps page covers them film by film.

Saw II Trivia: Budget, Sets and the Needle Pit

The best known piece of Saw II trivia is the needle pit, a set that used about 120,000 modified syringes. The facts below cover the budget, the script, the shoot and the sets.

  • Box Office Mojo reports a $4 million budget for Saw II, compared with a little over $1 million for the first Saw. The Numbers lists $5 million, so the exact figure depends on the source.
  • Darren Lynn Bousman's earlier script The Desperate was reworked into the basis for Saw II, with Leigh Whannell revising it.
  • Principal photography ran about 25 days in Toronto, from May 2 to June 6, 2005.

  • Saw II was the last film produced by Gregg Hoffman, who died on December 4, 2005.
  • The film earned about $148 million worldwide, more than Saw (2004) took, and it ranks below the roughly $165 million of Saw III.
