Charlie Swan: Bella's Father in the Twilight Films

Charlie Swan is the police chief of the rainy town of Forks, Washington, and the father of Bella Swan. In Twilight (2008), directed by Catherine Hardwicke, seventeen-year-old Bella leaves Phoenix, Arizona, to live with him, and that move sets the whole saga in motion. Billy Burke is billed third in that film, after Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, a high placing for a parent in a story built around a teenage romance.

The credits give the name Charlie Swan in every film, so there are no alternate credited names to untangle. Billy Burke is the actor and Charlie Swan is the character, which answers the common "real name" search. Burke returns in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009, directed by Chris Weitz), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010, directed by David Slade), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012), both directed by Bill Condon. His billing sits at eighth, sixth, fourth and tenth in those four films, as the ensemble grows around him.

The animated series Twilight: Midnight Sun, which Netflix ordered in September 2024, is television rather than a film. It is in development with no release date and no cast announced, so where Charlie fits in it is unknown.

Charlie's closest relationship is with his daughter, Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, and nearly every scene he has is shaped by it. She chooses to live with him in Forks in the first film, and he is the parent who copes with her heartbreak in New Moon.

His connection to Edward Cullen changes over the saga. Edward starts as the odd boy from the Cullen family, becomes Bella's boyfriend, then her fiancé in Eclipse and her husband at the start of Breaking Dawn Part 1. By the end of the wedding Edward is Charlie's son in law, and the two families are joined in public.

Through Edward's family, Charlie is linked to Carlisle Cullen and the wider Cullen family, who attend the wedding with Bella's family.

His granddaughter is Renesmee, Bella and Edward's daughter. Her unusually fast growth in Breaking Dawn Part 2 is what starts Charlie noticing that something is strange. Jacob Black is the other regular presence in Bella's life, the friend she grows close to while Charlie watches her recover after the Cullens leave.

In my opinion, Charlie's best moments are the small ones, because Billy Burke plays him as the one person in Forks who is entirely human. Here are the scenes I would point a newcomer to first.

The arrival in Forks (Twilight, 2008). Bella steps out of Phoenix and into her father's rainy town, and Charlie is the reason that world feels lived in. It could be argued that the whole romance works better because there is an ordinary house to come home to.

The worry after the Cullens leave (New Moon). This is the film where he has the least to say about vampires and the most to say about being a parent. When Bella is numb and withdrawn for months, his concern gives the heartbreak a real cost, which the supernatural plot cannot supply by itself. For me, it is the film where Charlie matters most, even though he is billed eighth.

The engagement news (Eclipse). Bella and Edward getting ready to tell her father is a funny, tense beat in a film full of fighting. That being said, it is the clearest picture of what a human parent has at stake.

The wedding (Breaking Dawn Part 1). Seeing Bella's father dance and celebrate with the Cullens is a gentle payoff for three films of keeping a distance.

Noticing something strange (Breaking Dawn Part 2). It is a modest note, but it fits the character, because he is the one who senses that the family is not quite what it seems.
