Who Plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen?

Who Is Carlisle Cullen in Twilight?

Carlisle Cullen is the vampire doctor at the head of the Cullen household, credited as Dr. Carlisle Cullen and played by Peter Facinelli in every Twilight film. In Twilight (2008), he and Esme (Elizabeth Reaser) lead the unusually pale adopted siblings Bella Swan notices at her new school in Forks, Washington. Facinelli is billed fourth in that first film, behind Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Billy Burke, and he stays in the main ensemble through the whole saga.

If you are new to the series, the quickest way to place him is by his title: he is the one credited as a doctor, and he and Esme are the couple who lead the family when Edward takes Bella home to meet them. For how the films differ from the novels, our guide to Twilight books vs movies covers what changed.

He is one of the central figures in the Cullen family, and you can find him in the full Twilight cast list. The animated series Midnight Sun, ordered by Netflix in 2024, is television rather than a film, and it has no release date or cast announced yet.

Carlisle Cullen's Story Across the Five FilmsSpoilers

Carlisle's story across the five films runs from leading the family when Bella meets the Cullens to the letter that reaches the Volturi and the standoff in the final film. He appears in Twilight (2008), The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

In Twilight (2008), Edward takes Bella to meet his adoptive family, led by Carlisle and Esme. Some of the family worry that Bella could expose their secret, yet the Cullens choose to protect her when the nomadic vampire James starts hunting her. They arrive at the ballet studio in Phoenix and destroy James, and Edward draws the venom out of Bella's blood before it can change her.

In The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the whole family leaves Forks after Jasper nearly attacks Bella at her eighteenth birthday party. Later, in Volterra, the Cullens plead with the Volturi leader Aro, and that pleading wins Bella a reprieve on the condition that she will be changed soon. The family returns to Forks afterward.

In The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the Cullens set aside their old hostility with the werewolf pack and train alongside it to fight Victoria's army of newborn vampires. Jasper teaches the group how newborns fight. The newborn army is destroyed, and the Volturi appear afterward to execute the surviving newborn, Bree Tanner.

In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, the Cullens attend the forest wedding of Bella and Edward, and the family worries over Bella as her pregnancy puts her life at risk. After the credits, the Volturi receive Carlisle's letter about the wedding and Bella's transformation, and their leader says the Cullens still have something he wants.

In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the Cullens learn that Irina has told the Volturi that Renesmee is an immortal child, and they gather vampire friends from around the world to stand as witnesses. When the Volturi arrive in the snowy fields near Forks, the Cullens and their allies face them, and in the battle shown in Alice's vision Carlisle is among those who fall.

Carlisle Cullen's Family and Relationships

Carlisle's closest ties are with Esme Cullen, who leads the household beside him, and with the adopted Cullen siblings, among them Edward, Alice, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett. In Twilight (2008), the family Edward introduces to Bella is described as led by Carlisle and Esme (Elizabeth Reaser).

Is Carlisle in love with Esme? As the films present them, yes: they are the couple who run the household together, and the five films show them side by side at the family's major decisions. The films stay quiet about how the pair met, so anything deeper about their romance belongs to Stephenie Meyer's books rather than the screen version.

His bond with Edward (Robert Pattinson) carries the most weight in the story, since Edward is the one who brings Bella to meet the family, and some of the family worry she could expose their secret. Read more on Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

Alice (Ashley Greene) is the Cullen whose visions move the plot in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. See Alice Cullen and Rosalie Hale for more on the siblings.

Outside the family, Aro (Michael Sheen), the Volturi leader, appears in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and again in the final film, and Carlisle's letter is what the Volturi receive in the post credit scene of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. Bella's father, Charlie Swan, and the wolf pack, which Jacob Black breaks with in that same film, sit on the other side of the family's secrets. You can read about Aro and Renesmee too.

What Happens to Carlisle Cullen?Spoilers

Carlisle survives the saga, and the only time he appears to fall is inside a vision. In the last film, Alice shows Aro a battle in which Carlisle, Jasper and several others are cut down, and it ends as a warning of what a Volturi attack would cost both sides.

Once Alice's final witness, a half-human, half-vampire man, shows that Renesmee poses no danger, the Volturi retreat and the family celebrates its safety. Alice then glimpses Renesmee and Jacob together in the years ahead, and Bella lowers her shield so Edward can see her memories.

So, if you searched for Carlisle Cullen's death, the answer is that the film shows his fall only as a vision. Several questions fans ask about him have no answer on screen: the films give no age at which he became a vampire, no London backstory, no explanation for his wealth and no scene about human blood. Those threads belong to the books, and the films present him simply as a doctor and a protector. Midnight Sun, the animated Netflix series now in development, has no cast or release date announced, so the films remain the only screen record of his story.

Best Carlisle Cullen Moments, Ranked by Feel

In my opinion, Carlisle's best moments are the ones where the family's fate hangs on a decision made without a fight. The standout, to my mind, is the Volterra standoff in New Moon, where the Cullens plead for Bella's life and Aro grants a reprieve. It is a scene about persuasion rather than fighting.

A second favorite is the post credit scene in Breaking Dawn Part 1. The Volturi receive Carlisle's letter about the wedding and Bella's transformation, and their leader says the Cullens still have something he wants. It could be argued that this is a neat way to hint at trouble, since a single letter turns a wedding into a warning.

The Breaking Dawn Part 2 vision battle is the third. Seeing Carlisle fall alongside Jasper makes the stakes feel real for a few minutes, and then Alice's reveal shows why the Volturi back down. Compared with Edward and Jacob, whose arcs get the loudest scenes, Carlisle's best material is understated.

Facts

FAQs

Is Carlisle Cullen good or bad?

Good, as the films present him: the Cullens, the family Carlisle leads with Esme Cullen, act as protectors. They choose to defend Bella from James in Twilight (2008), plead for her life before the Volturi in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and gather witnesses for Renesmee in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

How old was Carlisle when she became a vampire?

The five films never state the age at which Carlisle became a vampire, and they give no London backstory either. Peter Facinelli plays him as a mature doctor in every film, and the details of his past belong to Stephenie Meyer's books.

Is Carlisle in love with Esme?

Yes, as the films show them: Carlisle and Esme Cullen (Elizabeth Reaser) are the couple who lead the Cullen family together, from Edward introducing Bella to them in Twilight (2008) through to the final standoff.

Why is Carlisle Cullen so rich?

The films never explain the Cullens' wealth. What they show is a doctor who heads a large adoptive family, and no scene in the five films breaks down where the money comes from.

Did Carlisle ever have human blood?

The five films never show Carlisle drinking human blood. They present him as the leader of a family that chooses to protect Bella, and any history of his first years as a vampire is not covered on screen.

Does Carlisle Cullen die in Twilight?

No. In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Carlisle falls in a battle that turns out to be a vision Alice shows Aro, and the Volturi then back down and leave without a fight.
