Edward Cullen: The Vampire Played by Robert Pattinson

Edward Cullen is a vampire who lives in Forks, Washington, with the Cullens, an adoptive family led by Dr. Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli) and Esme Cullen (Elizabeth Reaser). He is played by Robert Pattinson, who is billed second in every film, directly behind Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan. Edward Cullen is the character's name in the credits, so there is no separate real name to look up: the person behind him is Pattinson. The films adapt the novels of Stephenie Meyer, whose books tell the same love story in her own prose.

We first meet him in Twilight (2008), directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Bella has just left Phoenix, Arizona, to live with her father Charlie in the rainy town of Forks, and at her new school she notices the Cullens, a group of unusually pale adopted siblings. Edward behaves strangely around her at first, then saves her from a van sliding across the school parking lot. From there, Bella is determined to find out what he is hiding.

As for his age, Edward is a seventeen year old in appearance who will stay seventeen forever, which is the gap that worries Bella as she nears her eighteenth birthday in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The five films follow that love story, and a Netflix animated series, Midnight Sun, is in development as television, not as a film. Netflix announced it in September 2024 with Stephenie Meyer as an executive producer, and with no release date and no cast.

Edward's most important relationship is with Bella Swan, and almost every other bond in his story is shaped by it. Their romance carries the saga from the van rescue in Twilight (2008) to the wedding in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and the question of whether Bella will become a vampire drives most of the plot in between.

His family is the second pillar. Carlisle Cullen and Esme are his adoptive parents, and the wider Cullen family stands behind him in every film. Alice Cullen is the sibling whose visions drive several turning points: in The Twilight Saga: New Moon her mistaken vision sends him to Italy, and in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse she foresees Victoria's army heading for Forks. Jasper explains to the group how newborn vampires fight, and Rosalie Hale guards Bella through her pregnancy while Edward fears for her life.

Then there is Jacob Black, the rival for Bella's heart. Jacob tells Bella he loves her in Eclipse, and she kisses him in the tent during a freezing night, which leaves her surer that her love for Edward is the stronger one. In Breaking Dawn Part 1, Jacob bonds with the newborn daughter of Bella and Edward, Renesmee.

On the dangerous side, Victoria hunts Bella because the Cullens killed her mate, and Aro leads the Volturi, who decide in New Moon that Bella must be turned or killed. Bella's father, Charlie Swan, is the person the couple get ready to tell about their engagement at the end of Eclipse.

In my opinion, Edward's best moments are the ones where he has to choose between his own safety and Bella's, because that choice is what Pattinson plays best. The first is the van rescue in the Forks school parking lot in Twilight (2008), where his strangeness suddenly makes sense. The second is the ballet studio, where he draws the venom from Bella's wound: it is the film's key romantic act and, in my reading, also a test of his restraint as a vampire.

The Volterra sequence in New Moon is the one I would pick if I could only keep one. Edward, shattered by Alice's mistaken vision, walks toward the sun in public, and Bella reaches him just in time. It could be argued that it is the most melodramatic scene in the series, but it also explains his devotion better than any speech could. Perhaps the quieter payoff arrives in Breaking Dawn Part 1, when he goes from wanting to end the pregnancy to loving the child once he hears its thoughts.

The last is the meadow in Breaking Dawn Part 2, where Bella lets him see her memories. After four films of Edward guarding Bella, the saga closes with him finally seeing the whole story from her side.
