What Is the Story Behind Underworld (2003)?

Underworld (2003) follows a hidden war between vampires and Lycans (werewolves) that has run for centuries, seen through a vampire assassin who starts to doubt what she has been told. Selene is a Death Dealer, one of the vampire soldiers who hunt Lycans, and she keeps hunting even though many in her coven believe the enemy is almost wiped out.

Her instincts pay off when she notices the Lycans tailing a human medical resident named Michael Corvin. She begins to investigate why a werewolf pack would care about an ordinary doctor, and that curiosity sets her against Kraven, the vampire who runs the coven while the elders sleep. So, if you are new to the series, the setup is simple: one soldier, one human target and a ruling class that would rather she stopped asking questions.

What Songs Are in Underworld (2003)? Soundtrack and Score

Paul Haslinger composed the score for Underworld (2003), and Lakeshore Records put out two albums: "Underworld: Music From the Motion Picture" on September 2, 2003, and "Underworld: Original Score" on October 14, 2003. Each album runs 19 tracks, so the songs and the score each get a full release.

The credited songs span A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, Finch, Skinny Puppy and The Dillinger Escape Plan, along with quieter names such as Lisa Germano and Sarah Bettens. The Bowie track carries three credited artists, and several titles are remixes, which is why the mix names sit in brackets.

  • "Bring Me the Disco King (Danny Lohner Mix)" by David Bowie, Maynard James Keenan and John Frusciante
  • "Judith (Renholder Mix)" by A Perfect Circle
  • "Weak and Powerless (Tilling My Grave Mix)" by A Perfect Circle
  • "Rev 22:20" by Puscifer
  • "Worms of the Earth" by Finch
  • "Optimissed" by Skinny Puppy
  • "Awakening" by The Damning Well
  • "Hover (Quiet Mix)" by Trust Company
  • "Baby's First Coffin" by The Dillinger Escape Plan
  • "From a Shell" by Lisa Germano
  • "On the Lash" by The Icarus Line
  • "All of This Past" by Sarah Bettens

If you want Haslinger's work on its own, the score album is the one to reach for, while the soundtrack album is where the songs sit. Haslinger also returned for Rise of the Lycans and Awakening, so the first film shares its composer with two later entries. For the whole series, from composers to key songs, see the underworld soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Underworld 2003 Plot SummarySpoilers

The full plot of Underworld (2003) turns on a single question: why do the Lycans want Michael Corvin alive? The summary below spoils the whole film.

Selene discovers that the Lycans, led by Lucian, are tracking Michael. During an attack Lucian bites Michael, and Selene has to choose between killing him and protecting him. She protects him, which breaks the coven's rules, and she wakes the elder Viktor early to warn him about Kraven. Viktor brushes her concerns aside.

The pressure keeps building. Amelia, another elder, is killed by Lycans, and Michael is held captive, where he learns that Viktor once killed his own daughter Sonja after she fell in love with Lucian. The Lycan scientist Singe explains that Michael descends from a common ancestor of both races and could become a hybrid of the two.

Viktor kills Singe and leads a raid on the Lycan lair. Kraven kills Lucian, and Viktor admits that he was the one who murdered Selene's family. Selene turns on Viktor and kills him. She and Michael then flee together, and, as they go, Marcus, another powerful elder, awakens as a hybrid at the end.

Underworld 2003 Release Dates

Underworld (2003) opened in US theaters on September 19, 2003, with the UK release reported for the same day and Australia following on January 22, 2004. The US date is confirmed by a Yahoo News interview with the director marking the 20th anniversary, and the UK and Australian dates are reported by TMDB and The Numbers.

No premiere city or venue has been published in the studio or trade coverage of the film. The film carries an R rating in the US, a 15 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia, which answers the common parents guide question about age.

The release gap with Australia is long by modern standards, with a four month wait after the US opening.

Underworld 2003 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Underworld (2003) comes down to three moves: Selene kills Viktor, Kraven has already killed Lucian, and Marcus awakens as a hybrid. The explanation below contains full spoilers and is my own reading of the film.

Why does Selene kill Viktor? She learns that he murdered her family and lied to her for years, so the authority she served as a Death Dealer was built on a falsehood. In my opinion, that is the real horror of the film, because the monster she hunted for was her own side. The reveal lands harder because of what Michael has just heard in captivity: Viktor killed his own daughter Sonja after she fell in love with Lucian. A ruler who destroys his own child over a forbidden bond has no problem erasing a Death Dealer's family and keeping the secret. Selene's turn on Viktor is the moment the film's two threads, the war and the lie, finally meet.

Lucian's death is the cost. Kraven kills him, which leaves the Lycans without a leader, and it could be argued that the film wants the Lycan cause to feel tragic. Lucian is the one who bit Michael, and Singe had just explained that Michael descends from a common ancestor of both races and could become a hybrid of the two. Lucian's plan dies with him, yet Michael is already the proof that it could work. Selene and Michael escape as outcasts from both the vampire and Lycan worlds, which is why the sequel opens with them on the run.

It is worth comparing how the series treats this history later. Underworld rise of the lycans, directed by Patrick Tatopoulos with Wiseman producing and shot largely in New Zealand according to Screen Daily, plays out the Lucian and Sonja romance as a prequel set centuries earlier. Lucian is born a Lycan but can take human form, and the vampires use the Lycans as enslaved labor. Seen after that film, Viktor's cruelty in the 2003 film reads as the end of a long habit rather than a sudden outburst.

Then comes the final beat. Was Marcus Corvinus the first vampire? Nothing in Underworld (2003) says so. He is introduced as another powerful elder who awakens as a hybrid, and the film leaves it there. Underworld evolution picks up the thread with Marcus waking early and killing Kraven and his men, and its setup names William Corvinus as the first werewolf, held in a secret prison by Viktor. For the order of these events across the series, see the underworld timeline and the corvinus bloodline guide.

Where Was Underworld 2003 Filmed?

Underworld (2003) was shot in Budapest, Hungary, where principal photography took place with a largely local crew. Few crew members spoke English, so the production used about 14 translators to keep the set running, and there was no second unit to share the workload.

That made for a hard shoot for a creature film with action set pieces. Rise of the Lycans was later shot largely in New Zealand.

Underworld 2003 Trivia

The best known facts about Underworld (2003) concern how a pitch that nearly died ended up launching a five film series.

  • Director Len Wiseman and actor Kevin Grevioux came up with the core idea, and stuntman turned writer Danny McBride helped develop it.
  • Wiseman first pitched a vampire versus werewolf story to Dimension, which passed. The werewolf focused project there became Cursed.
  • Lakeshore Entertainment financed the film after many rejections, reportedly won over by Wiseman's drawings.
  • Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg suggested Kate Beckinsale, who had no onscreen action experience and trained under stunt coordinator Brad Martin.
  • The Budapest shoot was difficult. About 14 translators were used because few crew members spoke English, and there was no second unit.
  • Wiseman had never owned a passport before making the film.
  • Kevin Grevioux, who conceived the story, also plays the Lycan Raze.

The film earned $52 million domestically and $43.7 million internationally, which is enough to explain why a sequel followed. For the series totals, see underworld box office, or return to the underworld movies hub.

Facts

FAQs

What is the story behind Underworld?

Underworld began as an idea from director Len Wiseman and actor Kevin Grevioux, with Danny McBride helping to develop it. Wiseman first pitched a vampire versus werewolf story to Dimension, which passed, and Lakeshore Entertainment financed it after many rejections. On screen, it follows the vampire Death Dealer Selene as she uncovers why the Lycans are tracking the human doctor Michael Corvin.

Who are the villains in Underworld?

The film has more than one antagonist, depending on whose side you take. Selene is opposed by Kraven, who leads the vampire coven, and by the elder Viktor, played by Bill Nighy. Michael Sheen's Lucian leads the Lycans who pursue Michael.

Was Marcus Corvinus the first vampire?

Not according to the film itself. In Underworld (2003), Marcus is introduced as another powerful elder who awakens as a hybrid in the final scene, and nothing in the story calls him the first vampire. In Underworld: Evolution, Tony Curran plays Marcus Corvinus, and the setup names William Corvinus as the first werewolf. This answer spoils the film's last beat.

Is Underworld 2003 a good movie?

That is a matter of taste, so here are the facts. Underworld (2003) earned about $95.7 million worldwide on a $22 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, and it led to four more films. Our verdict will appear in the underworld reviews, and you can see where it lands in the underworld movies ranked list.

What is the age rating for Underworld in the UK?

Underworld (2003) is rated 15 in the UK. In the US it is rated R and in Australia it is MA 15+. Underworld: Evolution, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Underworld: Awakening are rated 18 in the UK.
