Underworld Evolution Plot: The Setup

Underworld: Evolution opens in 1202, when the vampire elders Marcus, Viktor and Amelia raid a werewolf village and take William, Marcus's twin brother and the first werewolf, as their prisoner. Viktor then locks William away in a secret place, and that hidden prison is the thread that pulls the whole sequel along.

In the present day, Selene is on the run with Michael, a man who is now a hybrid of vampire and werewolf. The vampire regent Kraven hunts them and tries to stop them from reaching Marcus, but the ancient elder wakes earlier than anyone planned. Selene takes Michael to a safe house, and the two of them begin to ask what a pendant that Marcus needs really means. Anyone coming to the film cold should start with Underworld (2003), because Selene and Michael arrive here already carrying the events of that story.

What Songs Are in Underworld: Evolution?

Marco Beltrami composed the score for Underworld: Evolution (2006), and the music was released on two albums from Lakeshore Records: the 16 track "Underworld: Evolution" soundtrack on January 10, 2006, and the 30 track "Underworld: Evolution (Original Score)" on February 21, 2006.

The two albums split the work in a simple way. The soundtrack album collects licensed songs from rock and metal acts, several of them in special mixes made for the release. The score album holds Beltrami's own orchestral cues, which is where most of the film's dread and momentum lives.

The featured songs are:

  • "The Undertaker (Renholdër mix)" by Puscifer
  • "To the End (RnR Cheryl mix)" by My Chemical Romance
  • "Her Portrait in Black" by Atreyu
  • "Our Truth" by Lacuna Coil
  • "Washing Away Me in the Tides" by Trivium
  • "Vermillion, Part 2 (Bloodstone mix)" by Slipknot
  • "Morning After" by Chester Bennington and Julien-K
  • "Burn (Alleged remix)" by Alkaline Trio
  • "The Last Sunrise (Dusk mix)" by Aiden
  • "Bite to Break Skin (The Legion of Doom remix)" by Senses Fail
  • "Where Do I Stab Myself in the Ears (The Legion of Doom remix)" by Hawthorne Heights
  • "Halloween 2" by Cradle of Filth

No source I have found ties these songs to specific scenes, so the safest way to hear them in context is to pair the album with a rewatch. If you want the composers and albums for the whole saga, the Underworld soundtrack page covers every film.

Underworld Evolution Full Plot SummarySpoilers

The full plot of Underworld: Evolution runs from a 1202 raid on a werewolf village to a helicopter rotor blade duel in the present, and it ends with both Corvinus brothers dead.

After Kraven and his followers are killed by the newly woken Marcus, Selene and Michael hide and grow closer while they hunt for the meaning of the pendant. Their search leads them to the exiled historian Andreas Tanis, who explains that Marcus, William and a third brother were the sons of Alexander Corvinus, the first immortal. Tanis also says that Selene's father built William's prison, and that the pendant is the key to it. Marcus then kills Tanis after drinking his blood to learn where the prison lies.

Selene and Michael next discover that a man known as Lorenz Macaro is really Alexander Corvinus, and at first he refuses to help them. Marcus attacks, impales Michael and learns the prison's location from Selene's blood. He fatally wounds his own father and takes the other half of the pendant. Alexander asks Selene to drink his blood, which gives her great strength and healing, and he dies by destroying his ship.

At the prison, Marcus has already freed William. Michael, who had seemed dead, wakes in full hybrid form and kills William. Selene kills Marcus by pushing him into helicopter rotor blades, and she then finds that Alexander's blood has made her immune to sunlight.

Release Dates and Premiere

Underworld: Evolution opened in the US on January 20, 2006, and Australia got it a day earlier, on January 19, 2006. The UK release was also January 20, 2006. The US date is confirmed, while the Australian and UK dates are reported by Box Office Mojo.

The film took $26.9 million in its US opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. No premiere date, city or venue has been published for it. It carries an R certification in the US, an 18 in the UK and an MA 15+ in Australia. For the wider run, the Underworld box office page compares the sequel with the other four films.

Underworld Evolution Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Underworld: Evolution closes the story of the Corvinus brothers: Marcus and William are both dead, Michael has survived as a powerful hybrid and Selene can now stand in sunlight. The vampire and Lycan conflict itself is still unresolved.

What happened to Michael Corvin? Marcus impales him during the attack at Alexander's ship, and he seems dead, but he wakes at the prison in full hybrid form and kills William. In my opinion, that is the sequel's best turn, because it makes the quieter half of the couple the one who ends the original werewolf, while Selene handles Marcus with the helicopter rotor blades. The two kills mirror the two brothers: one hybrid claw for the first Lycan, one set of spinning blades for the first vampire elder to wake.

Why does the sunlight reveal matter? Alexander asks Selene to drink his blood, it gives her great strength and healing, and it leaves her immune to sunlight. That is the rule change of the film, and I think it is a smart one, because it hands the saga a hero who can walk out of the night world. It could be argued that this sets her apart from the covens that Underworld Awakening later shows being hunted by humans, where Selene wakes from a cryogenic tank into a world that has turned on both species.

How does the ending compare with the rest of the saga? The prequel, Underworld Rise of the Lycans, is a contained 92 minute tragedy about Lucian and Sonja, and it closes its own story. Evolution runs 106 minutes and deliberately leaves a door open: Selene and Michael are survivors of both bloodlines, with no victory over either species. That is a franchise ending rather than a finale, and the story does carry on in Awakening and Underworld Blood Wars.

There is also a production angle. Evolution had a $45 million budget according to The Numbers, a clear step up from the first film, and the finale is where it shows: a helicopter set piece, a ship destroyed by Alexander and a full hybrid creature, rather than the gunfights and corridors of the opening act. Len Wiseman returned as director, so the sequel keeps the look of the 2003 original while giving the family history more weight. If you want to see where the story goes next, the Underworld timeline lays out the order.

Filming Locations

No filming location list has been published for Underworld: Evolution. On screen, the story moves between a 1202 werewolf village, the present day safe houses where Selene and Michael hide, Alexander Corvinus's ship, the secret prison and the helicopter finale.
