Dune Timeline: The Story in Order, Film by Film

The Dune timeline runs through three Denis Villeneuve films in story order: Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024) and Dune: Part Three, due in US theaters on December 18, 2026. David Lynch's Dune (1984) adapts the same book but is a separate telling, so it sits beside this story rather than inside it.

What Is the Dune Timeline in Order?

The Dune timeline in order is Dune (2021), then Dune: Part Two (2024), then Dune: Part Three (December 2026). Denis Villeneuve directed the first two. Each film begins where the previous one stops, so release order and story order are identical for this run. The three films follow one continuous story about Paul Atreides, the son of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, and the desert planet Arrakis.

Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, is the exception. It tells the story of Paul's rise on Arrakis in a single film, with a different cast and a different design, and a planned sequel never followed. It is not a prequel to the Villeneuve films and it is not a sequel to them. Think of it the way you would think of two different television adaptations of the same story: same starting point, separate continuity.

That is also the short answer to a common question, which is whether Dune is a prequel. It is not. Dune (2021) is the beginning of the story, and the films that follow it continue forward rather than backward. If you want the viewing sequence rather than the story sequence, the Dune movies in order page sets out both lists. For the full run of titles, see Dune movies.

Dune (1984): The Separate Earlier AdaptationSpoilers

Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, sits outside the Villeneuve run as its own self contained film. It opens in the year 10,191, reached US theaters on December 14, 1984, and runs 136 minutes. Kyle MacLachlan is Paul Atreides, Francesca Annis is Lady Jessica, Patrick Stewart is Gurney Halleck and Sting is Feyd Rautha. The Dune 1984 page has the cast and credits.

In timeline terms, this film moves fastest. A Harkonnen strike, helped by a traitor in the Atreides household, kills Duke Leto early on. Paul and Jessica flee into the deep desert, the Fremen adopt them, and Paul takes the name Muad'Dib, learns to ride sandworms and falls for Chani. His raids on spice production draw the Emperor's fleet to Arrakis, which leads to the final battle.

The finish is where it differs most from the newer films. Paul beats Feyd Rautha in a duel, forces the Emperor to yield and brings rain to the desert, and his sister Alia announces the change. Everything the Villeneuve films stretch across two features, and a third in progress, happens here within one sitting. A planned sequel never followed, so the story simply ends on that rain.

Dune (2021): Where the Villeneuve Story BeginsSpoilers

Dune (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve and also referred to as Dune: Part One, is the first stretch of the current story and ends well before Paul takes any power. It had its world premiere at the 78th Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2021, reached US theaters on October 22, 2021 and runs 155 minutes, with Timothée Chalamet as Paul. The Dune 2021 page covers the film itself.

For the timeline, the useful way to read it is as a short span of upheaval. Emperor Shaddam hands Arrakis to House Atreides, Duke Leto goes knowing it may be a trap, and Paul is already dreaming of Chani. Then the Harkonnens and the Sardaukar strike, Yueh disables the shields, and Leto dies after failing to kill the Baron. Duncan Idaho and other loyal soldiers buy time for an ornithopter escape.

What remains is the walk through the desert. After a sandstorm, Paul kills Jamis in a duel, and Stilgar's Fremen accept Paul and Jessica. Chani's closing remark that this is only the beginning is the hinge into the sequel, and it is why the two films play as one continuous run.

Dune: Part Two (2024): The War for ArrakisSpoilers

Dune: Part Two (2024), directed by Denis Villeneuve, covers the longest stretch of story in the trilogy so far: Paul's years of rising among the Fremen and the war that follows. It opened in US theaters on March 1, 2024, moved up from March 15, and runs 167 minutes. TheWrap reports it was first dated for November 3, 2023, before the SAG-AFTRA strike delay. See Dune Part Two for the film page.

The film starts on the Jamis duel and then splits into two tracks. On one, Paul trains with the Fremen, rides a worm and raids spice harvesters beside Chani, who distrusts the prophecy as a Bene Gesserit invention. On the other, Jessica survives the Water of Life and inherits the memories of earlier Reverend Mothers. Meanwhile the Baron swaps Rabban for Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler), who is far more ruthless.

The turning point is Paul's own drink of the Water of Life, which leaves him in a coma until Jessica revives him. He learns the truth of the breeding plan behind his birth and declares himself the Lisan al Gaib. His threat to the spice fields then draws the Emperor in. The Fremen answer with atomic weapons and sandworms, Paul kills the Baron, Gurney kills Rabban and Paul kills Feyd-Rautha in a knife duel.

The settlement fails almost at once. Irulan agrees to marry Paul to spare her father, the other Great Houses reject his claim, and he orders an attack on their orbiting fleet, which Jessica treats as the start of a holy war. Chani refuses to bow and rides off alone on a sandworm.

Dune: Part Three: What Comes Next in the TimelineSpoilers

Dune: Part Three is scheduled to open in US theaters on December 18, 2026, and it continues from the end of Dune: Part Two. TheWrap reports that the date includes large format screens such as IMAX, from Legendary and Warner Bros., and The A.V. Club reports that Avengers: Doomsday opens the same day. No source reports that the date has moved. The film is in post production as of November 3, 2026, and the reports give a US date only. Full status is on the Dune Part Three page, and the Dune Part Three trailer page collects the footage.

The closing scenes of Dune: Part Two set up a third film based on Dune Messiah, with Paul as a darker ruler of a galaxy at war.

In story terms, then, the third film follows Paul after he has taken the throne, agreed to marry Irulan to secure it and sent the Fremen against the Great Houses. Chani left him on a sandworm at the end of the last film, so the personal and political threads both stay open. Beyond those points, plot details for Part Three have not been confirmed.

Dune Timeline Explained: How the Pieces FitSpoilers

The Dune timeline is a single continuous story told by Villeneuve across three films, plus one older adaptation that runs on its own track. In my opinion, the clearest way to hold it in your head is to treat the 1984 film as one telling of Frank Herbert's first novel, and the Villeneuve trilogy as another telling that has been given room to continue.

Why did Villeneuve need two films for what Lynch compressed into one? Perhaps the simplest answer is pacing. Lynch's 136 minutes carry Paul from the arrival on Arrakis to making it rain, ending with the Emperor beaten and the prophecy fulfilled. Villeneuve's 155 minute first film stops at the point where Paul joins the Fremen, and his 167 minute sequel handles the uprising, the duels and the Great Houses refusing to bow. That leaves the second film ending on a very different note: not a triumph, but a rift between Paul and Chani and the beginning of a holy war.

Is Paul actually the Mahdi, or the messiah the Fremen wait for? The films give a divided answer, and I would say that division is deliberate. Chani sees the prophecy as a Bene Gesserit invention, yet Paul declares himself the Lisan al Gaib after learning the truth about the breeding plan behind his birth. In other words, Paul uses a belief he knows was planted.

What is the Golden Path in Dune? It is a concept from Herbert's later novels, not from the first book, and the films released so far do not cover it. No source reports that Part Three goes past Dune Messiah, so I would treat the Golden Path as book territory for now.

How long does Dune take place over? None of the three Villeneuve films states a total span in years. The only year on offer is the 1984 film's opening date of 10,191. Dune: Prophecy, the television series, is a separate production and is not placed in the film timeline here. For how the novels relate to each film, the Dune books vs movies page covers the differences.

Do you need to read the books first? No. The films stand on their own, and a reader who wants context for Part Three would look to Dune Messiah, the book the next film is set up to adapt. If you are new to the series, start with Dune (2021) and keep Lynch's version for afterward as a comparison.
