Chani in Dune: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her

Chani is a Fremen woman who appears to Paul Atreides in his dreams long before he meets her, and who becomes his closest companion once he joins her people in the deep desert. Zendaya plays her in Dune (2021), where she is billed 13th in a large ensemble, and again in Dune: Part Two (2024), where she moves up to second billing behind Timothée Chalamet. That change in billing says a good deal about how the story treats her: in the first film she is a recurring vision, and in the second she is a person with her own judgment.

She belongs to the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, the desert planet that is the only source of the spice. The Fremen are led in these films by Stilgar, played by Javier Bardem. Another Fremen-world figure in Dune (2021) is Dr. Liet Kynes, played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster and billed ninth. In Part Two, Chani is the voice of doubt about the prophecy that many of her tribe attach to Paul, which she regards as a Bene Gesserit invention.

Both Villeneuve films adapt Frank Herbert's novel. There is also an earlier version: David Lynch's Dune (1984) is a separate adaptation of the same book, and in it Paul also falls in love with a Fremen woman named Chani as he grows into the leader of her people. Paul Atreides and Chani grow close in Dune: Part Two (2024), but by the final scene the relationship is broken. Her bond with Paul Atreides begins as a dream in Dune (2021) and becomes a real partnership in the sequel, where she fights alongside him during the raids on the spice operation. The break comes from his decision to take Irulan as his future wife and to start a war against the Great Houses, and Chani is horrified by both.

Does Paul have any children with Irulan? Not in Dune: Part Two, where Irulan agrees to marry Paul so that her father is spared. Readers of Frank Herbert's novels may look for Leto II and Ghanima in this part of the story, but neither appears among the billed cast of Part Two, which closes by setting up a third film based on Dune Messiah. Neither Villeneuve film gives Chani an age or shows a pregnancy.

Her other ties are tribal. Stilgar leads the Fremen who shelter Paul. Lady Jessica survives the Water of Life and takes on a dangerous religious role among the Fremen. Jamis is the fighter Paul faces in a duel, which wins Paul his place in the tribe.

Irulan is the sharpest link in the second film, since her marriage to Paul is a central reason Chani walks away. For the enemies of the story instead, see Baron Harkonnen and Feyd Rautha.

The best Chani moments are the ones where she disagrees with the film around her, and in my opinion that is why Dune: Part Two works as well as it does. The three below are my picks, offered as opinion rather than fact.

First, her closing line in Dune (2021). Paul has just killed Jamis and been accepted by Stilgar, and Chani answers that the fight is only starting. It is a short exchange, but it turns a dream figure into someone who sounds as if she already knows what the desert will cost. Second, her doubt about the prophecy in Part Two. Most of the Fremen around her believe in the Lisan al Gaib, and her refusal gives the audience a way to see Paul's rise as a warning rather than a triumph. It could be argued that she is the only character in the film who reads the situation correctly from the start.

Third, the final shot. Chani rides off on a sandworm after Paul takes Irulan as his future wife and sends the Fremen against the Great Houses. Villeneuve ends the film on her and not on Paul, which in my opinion reads as a deliberate choice for a story that could have closed on his victory over Feyd-Rautha. Compared with David Lynch's Dune (1984), where the ending is Paul's rain on Arrakis and Alia's announcement of a changed world, it is a darker and more honest closing note.
