Dune Movies in Order: Release and Chronological Order
The Dune movies in order are Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024) and, from December 18, 2026, Dune: Part Three, with Denis Villeneuve as director of the first two and reported as director of the third. David Lynch's Dune (1984) is a separate earlier adaptation of the same novel. Release order and story order are identical for the films from 2021 on, so you only need to decide where, if anywhere, the 1984 film fits for you.

About the Release Order
The Dune movies in order of release are Dune (1984), Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024) and Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled to open in US theaters on December 18, 2026.
- Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, released in the US on December 14, 1984 (a separate adaptation of the same novel)
- Dune (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve, released in the US on October 22, 2021
- Dune: Part Two (2024), directed by Denis Villeneuve, released in the US on March 1, 2024
- Dune: Part Three, with Denis Villeneuve reported as director, scheduled for US theaters on December 18, 2026 (not yet released)
That gives three released theatrical films and one on the way, and only the first of them stands apart from the rest of the dune movies. Frank Herbert's novel reached theaters first in Dune (1984), a 136 minute film that grossed about $31.5 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. More than three decades passed before the next big screen version arrived.
Dune (2021) opened in the US on October 22, 2021, in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. It reached the UK a day earlier, on October 21, 2021, and Australia on December 2, 2021, according to TMDB. Box Office Mojo credits it with about $411 million worldwide on a $165 million budget.
Dune: Part Two had the bumpier calendar. It was first dated for November 3, 2023, then delayed during the SAG-AFTRA strike, rescheduled for March 15, 2024 and finally moved up to March 1, 2024, according to TheWrap. It grossed about $715 million worldwide on a $190 million budget, and reached Australia on February 28, 2024.
Dune: Part Three closes the list for now. TheWrap reported on March 17, 2026 that a trailer had arrived with a December 18, 2026 date and IMAX theaters secured for opening weekend, and The A.V. Club noted that it opens the same day as Avengers: Doomsday.
About the Chronological Order
The Dune chronological order matches release order for the films from 2021 on, because each one continues directly from the one before.
- Dune (2021)
- Dune: Part Two (2024)
- Dune: Part Three (scheduled December 18, 2026, not yet released)
Dune (1984) sits outside this list on purpose. It retells the opening of the same novel from scratch with a different cast, Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck and Sting as Feyd Rautha, so it is neither a prequel nor a sequel to anything Villeneuve made. Listing it first only reflects its release date.
Three other titles are often mentioned alongside the films: Dune (2000 miniseries), Children of Dune and Dune: Prophecy. They are screen productions made for television rather than theatrical films, which is why they sit in neither list. Each stands apart from the Villeneuve story, and you can watch the films without them.
If you are searching for the Dune movies in order with Timothée Chalamet, the answer is those same three films. He plays Paul Atreides in Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two, and TheWrap reported in March 2026 that he returns for Part Three alongside Zendaya as Chani, Javier Bardem as Stilgar and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. The same report names Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and Robert Pattinson as Scytale, and a July 2026 TheWrap report adds Jason Momoa as Hayt.
The title of the third film has its own small history. Variety (Australia) reported in July 2025 that it would be called Dune: Part Three, having previously been reported as Dune Messiah. TheWrap's explainer on the ending of Part Two describes that ending as setting up Dune Messiah, so the book and the film are closely linked.
Where to Start: Which Dune Movie Should You Watch First?
My advice, in my opinion, is to start with Dune (2021) and watch Dune: Part Two straight after, because the second film continues the same story with the same lead cast and assumes you remember who everyone is. So, should you watch Dune 1 or 2 first? The first, every time.
The practical side matters here. The two Villeneuve films run 155 and 167 minutes, which is 322 minutes in total, or about five hours and 22 minutes. That is roughly a long afternoon at the theater with a lunch break, or two comfortable evenings at home. As of November 3, 2026, both films stream on HBO Max in the US, according to JustWatch via TMDB.
Where does the 1984 film fit? It could be argued that Dune (1984) works better as a comparison than as an introduction, because Lynch packs a crowded cast of houses, titles and rivals into 136 minutes and expects the viewer to keep up. I would watch it after Part Two, once you know the story well enough to enjoy what it does differently (and perhaps forgive what it skips).
Readers of Frank Herbert's novels should still begin with Dune (2021), since the films tell their story in sequence.
If you want to be ready for Dune: Part Three on December 18, 2026, my plan would be Dune (2021) first and Dune: Part Two second, ideally a week or two before opening night. Streaming services differ by country, so check where each film is available where you live before you settle in.

FAQs
In what order should I watch Dune?
Watch Dune (2021), then Dune: Part Two (2024), and then Dune: Part Three when it opens on December 18, 2026. Denis Villeneuve directed the first two and is reported as director of the third, and the films continue one story. David Lynch's Dune (1984) is a separate adaptation of the same novel, so it is optional and can be watched at any point, preferably after Part Two.
Should I watch Dune 1 or 2 first?
Watch Dune (2021) first. Dune: Part Two continues directly from it with the same lead cast, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, and it assumes you already know the characters and the situation on Arrakis. Watching them back to back takes about five hours and 22 minutes.
Is Dune going to be 3 movies, or 4?
Three, in the Villeneuve story: Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024) and Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for December 18, 2026. Variety (Australia) reported in July 2025 that the third film would be titled Dune: Part Three, having previously been reported as Dune Messiah, and Denis Villeneuve is reported as its director. How many Dune films are there in order?
There are three released theatrical Dune films: Dune (1984), Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), with Dune: Part Three scheduled for December 18, 2026. Only Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two and the upcoming Part Three are one connected story.
What is the order of the Dune trilogy?
The trilogy runs Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024) and Dune: Part Three, which has a US release date of December 18, 2026. Villeneuve directed the first two and is reported as director of the third. Release order and story order are the same. The 1984 film by David Lynch is not part of this trilogy.
