Dune Characters: The Main Cast and Who Plays ThemSpoilers
The main Dune characters belong to three groups: House Atreides, the Fremen of Arrakis, and House Harkonnen together with the Emperor's court, and the same ensemble carries across Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two. David Lynch's Dune (1984) adapts the same book with a different cast, so its actors are named separately below. For the order in which to see all three, the Dune movies in order guide sets it out, and the full credits sit on the Dune cast page.
House Atreides
Paul Atreides is the central character, played by Timothée Chalamet in both Villeneuve films and by Kyle MacLachlan in 1984. Paul is a teenager when his family takes over the desert planet Arrakis, haunted by dreams of a Fremen girl and trained by his father's men and by his mother's Bene Gesserit discipline. By the end of Part Two he has declared himself the Lisan al Gaib, the title the Fremen prophecy gives him, and forced the Emperor to yield the throne.
Lady Jessica is Paul's mother and a Bene Gesserit, played by Rebecca Ferguson (credited as Lady Jessica Atreides in 2021 and as Jessica in Part Two) and by Francesca Annis in 1984. In Part Two she survives the Water of Life and gains the memories of past Reverend Mothers, which gives her a dangerous religious role among the Fremen.
Duke Leto Atreides, Paul's father, is played by Oscar Isaac. He accepts Arrakis from the Emperor even though he suspects a trap, hoping to win the Fremen as allies, and he dies after a failed attempt to kill the Baron Harkonnen in the 2021 film.
Duncan Idaho is one of Leto's loyal soldiers, played by Jason Momoa in 2021 and by Richard Jordan in 1984. He survives a spice harvester accident with Paul, then dies helping Paul and Jessica escape in an ornithopter. Gurney Halleck is played by Josh Brolin in both Villeneuve films and by Patrick Stewart in 1984, and in Part Two he kills Rabban. Thufir Hawat, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson in 2021 and Freddie Jones in 1984, also serves the household, and Dr. Wellington Yueh (Chang Chen) is the doctor who disables the Atreides shields in 2021.
The Fremen
Chani is the Fremen woman from Paul's dreams, played by Zendaya in both Villeneuve films. In Part Two she doubts the prophecy because she sees it as a Bene Gesserit invention, and she refuses to bow to Paul after his political marriage, riding away alone on a sandworm.
Stilgar leads the Fremen who take in Paul and Jessica. Javier Bardem plays him in both Villeneuve films and Everett McGill played him in 1984. Around him are Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun), whom Paul kills in a duel, Dr. Liet Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) in 2021 and Shishakli (Souheila Yacoub) in Part Two. In the 1984 film, Linda Hunt plays Shadout Mapes.
House Harkonnen and the Emperor's Court
Baron Harkonnen, formally Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, heads the rival house and is played by Stellan Skarsgård in the Villeneuve films and by Kenneth McMillan in 1984. Beast Rabban is played by Dave Bautista, and Piter de Vries by David Dastmalchian in 2021 (Brad Dourif in 1984). Feyd-Rautha is the Baron's more ruthless nephew, who replaces Rabban in Part Two, played by Austin Butler, and by Sting in 1984. In both versions he ends in a duel with Paul and loses.
The Emperor is Shaddam, played by Christopher Walken in Part Two and by José Ferrer in 1984 (credited there as Padisha Emperor Shaddam IV). His daughter Princess Irulan is played by Florence Pugh in Part Two and by Virginia Madsen in 1984. Charlotte Rampling plays Reverend Mother Mohiam in both Villeneuve films, and Léa Seydoux plays Lady Margot Fenring in Part Two. The wider political picture is covered on the Dune houses page.
The 1984 Film's Own Cast
The 1984 film has its own cast because Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, stands apart from the Villeneuve story. Its top billed cast was Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Patrick Stewart, Linda Hunt, José Ferrer, Freddie Jones, Brad Dourif, Richard Jordan, Virginia Madsen, Silvana Mangano (as Reverend Mother Ramallo), Everett McGill, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Jack Nance (as Nefud) and Siân Phillips (as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam). Its story ends with Paul calling rain onto Arrakis. How the films differ from Frank Herbert's novels is covered in Dune books vs movies.

FAQs
Who are the new characters in Dune 3?
No new characters for Dune: Part Three have been confirmed in trade reporting. The film opens in US theaters on December 18, 2026, and continues from the end of Dune: Part Two, which sets up a third film based on Dune Messiah with Paul as a darker ruler of a galaxy at war. Until the studio names new roles, the story rests on the characters introduced in the first two films. Cast news is tracked on the Dune: Part Three page.
Are the Harkonnens the bad guys?
In the films, House Harkonnen are the antagonists of the Atreides story. In Dune (2021) the Harkonnens attack House Atreides with the help of the Emperor's Sardaukar soldiers, and the Baron Harkonnen is behind the capture and death of Duke Leto. In Dune: Part Two the Baron sends his nephew Feyd-Rautha to take control of the planet, and Feyd-Rautha steps up the attacks on the Fremen. The picture is not tidy, though: by the end of Part Two Paul himself orders an attack on the Great Houses' fleet, and Chani turns away from him.
Who is the male star in Dune?
Timothée Chalamet is the male star of the Villeneuve films, playing Paul Atreides with first billing in both Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two. In David Lynch's Dune (1984), the lead is Kyle MacLachlan, also as Paul and also first billed. Among the supporting men, Oscar Isaac plays Duke Leto, Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin plays Gurney Halleck and Javier Bardem plays Stilgar.
What are some cool names in Dune?
Several Dune names stand out on screen. Muad'Dib is the name Paul takes among the Fremen in the 1984 film, and Lisan al Gaib is the title the Fremen prophecy gives him in Dune: Part Two. Among characters, Feyd-Rautha, Beast Rabban and Piter de Vries belong to House Harkonnen, Shadout Mapes appears in the 1984 film, and Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is the full credited name of the character usually called Mohiam. The 1984 credits also list Padisha Emperor Shaddam IV.
Who were the main actors in the 1984 film Dune?
David Lynch's Dune (1984) starred Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, with Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck, Linda Hunt as Shadout Mapes and José Ferrer as the Emperor. The rest of the top billed cast includes Freddie Jones, Brad Dourif, Richard Jordan, Virginia Madsen, Silvana Mangano, Everett McGill, Sting as Feyd Rautha, Kenneth McMillan as the Baron, Jack Nance and Siân Phillips.
Are there LGBT characters in Dune?
The plot outlines of Dune (1984), Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two do not identify any character as LGBT. The question is more often raised about characters in Frank Herbert's novels, which the films adapt only in part. The differences between the books and the films are covered on the Dune books vs movies page.
