Who Is Will Graham in the Hannibal Movies?

Will Graham is a former FBI profiler who left the Bureau after his hunt for Hannibal Lecter nearly cost him his life, and he is the lead of the Red Dragon story. In both films his old boss Jack Crawford persuades him to come back and help catch a serial killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, who targets whole families. So, what does Will Graham do? He studies crime scenes, works out how the killer chooses his victims, and then visits Lecter in prison to borrow his insight into a murderer's mind. That is a grim bargain, because Lecter is the man who hurt him in the first place.

Two actors play him in the films. Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann, stars William L. Petersen, and in that film the psychiatrist is spelled Lecktor and played by Brian Cox. Red Dragon (2002), directed by Brett Ratner, is a later adaptation of the same story with Edward Norton as Graham and Anthony Hopkins as Lecter.

Is Will Graham in the Hannibal movie? Not in Hannibal (2001), Hannibal Rising or The Silence of the Lambs, where the credited cast does not include him. For the man on the other side of the glass, see hannibal lecter.

Will Graham in Red Dragon and Manhunter: The Story ArcSpoilers

Graham's story runs the same course in both films: he is pulled out of retirement, he hunts a killer through home movies, and the hunt follows him back to his family. The details differ, and the differences are worth walking through.

In Manhunter, Graham has already left the job when Crawford asks him to return and find a killer who murders families under a full moon. He studies the crime scenes and visits Lecktor in prison for advice. Lecktor, however, secretly passes coded messages to the killer, and this exposes Graham's home address, so his wife and son are moved to safety. Graham then works out that the killer found his victims through their home movies, which passed through the film processing lab where Francis Dollarhyde works. That deduction leads him to Dollarhyde's house, where a violent shootout ends the case.

Red Dragon opens earlier, in 1980. Graham, then still an active profiler, realizes the psychiatrist he has been consulting is the killer he is looking for. Lecter badly wounds him before being captured and committed to an institution. Graham retires to Florida with his wife Molly and son Josh. Some years later the Tooth Fairy murders two families, and Crawford brings him back. Graham visits Lecter, who offers cryptic guidance while secretly sending messages to the killer. Graham follows the same film processing lead to francis dolarhyde, who fakes his own death and then goes after the Graham family in Florida.

Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter: His Key Relationships

Graham's most important relationship is with Hannibal Lecter, and in the films it is adversarial rather than romantic. Does Hannibal have a crush on Will Graham, and are the two of them lovers? Neither film shows anything of the kind. Lecter is the man who nearly killed Graham, and in both films he trades advice with him from a cell while secretly passing messages to the killer. Why does Hannibal like Will Graham? The films never state a reason outright. What they show is a man who clearly enjoys the contact, giving cryptic guidance and, at the end of Red Dragon, sending Graham a note from his cell.

Graham's family is his anchor. His wife is Molly Graham, played by Kim Greist in Manhunter and by Mary-Louise Parker in Red Dragon. His son is Kevin (David Seaman) in Manhunter and Josh (Tyler Patrick Jones) in Red Dragon. Does Will Graham have a wife? Yes, in both films, and in Manhunter he leaves her and their son in Florida to study the crime scenes.

Jack Crawford is the one who calls him back, played by Dennis Farina in Manhunter and Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon. The killer, Francis Dollarhyde (Dollarhyde in Manhunter, played by Tom Noonan, and Dolarhyde in Red Dragon, played by Ralph Fiennes), forms a tentative relationship with his blind coworker Reba McClane (Joan Allen, then Emily Watson). The tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds, played by Stephen Lang and then Philip Seymour Hoffman, publishes stories on the case and becomes a target himself. Crawford also appears in The Silence of the Lambs, and you can read more at jack crawford silence of the lambs.

What Happened to Will Graham? Does He Die?Spoilers

Will Graham survives both of his films, and neither one ends with him dead. He is left alive and home with his family each time, though never unmarked by the case.

In Manhunter, the trail ends at Francis Dollarhyde's house, where a shootout leaves the killer dead and Reba McClane rescued. Graham leaves wounded but walks back to his wife and son. Lecktor is still locked in his cell, a loose thread that the later films pick up.

Red Dragon takes a different route to the same result. Dolarhyde stages his own death, which lets the hunt appear to be over, and then turns up in Florida, where Graham's wife Molly and son Josh live. Dolarhyde takes the boy hostage. Both men come out of the struggle badly hurt, and it is Molly who fires the shot that ends Dolarhyde. Graham later gets a note from Lecter, who is still imprisoned. The last scene belongs to Lecter, as Dr. Chilton tells him a young FBI trainee is waiting to meet him, a direct hand off to The Silence of the Lambs.

What disability does Will Graham have? The films give him none. What they give him is a history with Lecter: in both films his hunt for the psychiatrist nearly cost him his life, and he has left the job by the time Crawford asks him to return.

Best Will Graham Moments

In my opinion, Graham's best scenes are the ones where he is thinking rather than fighting, and the two films give him different moments to show it. Perhaps the clearest example is the home movie deduction that both films share, where he realizes the killer found his victims through the film processing lab. It is a piece of detective work that turns on a single practical detail, and it is the point where the case stops being a list of crime scenes and becomes a person.

The cell visits to Lecter are the second pick. In Manhunter, Petersen's Graham goes to Lecktor for advice, and the audience does not yet know that Lecktor is passing the killer a message that exposes Graham's address. In Red Dragon the same visit has more weight because the film has already shown, in its 1980 opening, how Graham spotted a clue in Lecter's home and nearly died in the struggle that followed. It could be argued that this prologue is the strongest case for the remake, since it turns a backstory Manhunter only mentions into a scene.

The finales split the two versions. Manhunter ends at Dollarhyde's house, a violent confrontation that Graham walks away from before going home. Red Dragon moves the last fight to the Graham home in Florida and gives Molly the final shot. I prefer the Florida version for the stakes, though Manhunter's ending suits its tone.
