Hannibal Timeline: Every Film in Story Order
The Hannibal timeline in story order runs Hannibal Rising (2007), Red Dragon (2002), The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Hannibal (2001), with Manhunter (1986) as an earlier, separate telling of the Red Dragon story. The saga opens in Lithuania in 1944 and its last film is set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case, even though the films were made out of sequence.
The Hannibal Lecter Timeline in Order
Where Does the Hannibal Timeline Begin? Hannibal RisingSpoilers
Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber, sits at the very start of the Hannibal timeline because it is set in 1944 Lithuania, long before any of the other films. Gaspard Ulliel plays the grown Hannibal Lecter and Aaran Thomas plays him as a boy. The war reaches the family castle, and after a Soviet tank wrecks their hiding place in a hunting lodge, only Hannibal and his sister Mischa survive. Vladis Grutas and his band of looters take over the lodge, and Mischa does not live through the winter.
The story then jumps forward. The castle is now an orphanage, and Hannibal slips away to France to find his aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li), who teaches him swordsmanship and Japanese culture. He enters medical school as its youngest student, and Inspector Popil (Dominic West) starts to watch him. Over the rest of the film Hannibal tracks down the men tied to Mischa's death, from Dortlich in Lithuania to Bronys Grentz in Saskatchewan.
For timeline purposes, the closing beat matters most: Hannibal settles in Canada and later the United States, a move that points toward the older doctor of the other films. Its US release came on February 9, 2007, so it was the last film made but is the first chapter in story order. Runtime is 121 minutes.
Red Dragon (2002): The Capture of Lecter in 1980Spoilers
Red Dragon (2002), directed by Brett Ratner, is the second chapter in story order and shows the case that put Lecter behind bars. In 1980, FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) consults the psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) on a series of murders. Graham spots a clue in Lecter's home that exposes him as the killer, and the two nearly kill each other in a violent struggle. Lecter is locked away and Graham retires to Florida with his wife Molly and son Josh.
The main plot comes some years later. A killer called the Tooth Fairy murders families during full moons, and Jack Crawford (Harvey Keitel) persuades Graham to come back. Graham visits Lecter in his cell for insight, and Lecter secretly passes messages to the killer, Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes). Dolarhyde fakes his own death, then goes after the Graham family in Florida, and Molly shoots him dead.
The final scene is the link that matters for the timeline. Dr. Chilton tells Lecter that a young FBI trainee has come to see him, which leads straight into The Silence of the Lambs. The film reached US theaters on October 4, 2002, eleven years after The Silence of the Lambs.
Manhunter (1986): A Parallel Telling of the Red Dragon StorySpoilers
Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann, is the first screen telling of the Red Dragon story, which Red Dragon (2002) later retold. It is the earliest Lecter film, released in the US on August 15, 1986, with Brian Cox as Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (the spelling used in that film's credits) and William L. Petersen as Will Graham.
The outline matches Red Dragon. Graham is a retired profiler who left the job after his hunt for Lecktor nearly cost him his life, and Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) draws him back to catch a killer who murders families under a full moon. Graham visits Lecktor in prison, and Lecktor passes coded messages to the killer, which exposes Graham's home address. The killer is Francis Dollarhyde (Tom Noonan), who works at a film processing lab and forms a tentative relationship with his blind coworker Reba McClane (Joan Allen).
Manhunter ends with a violent shootout in which Dollarhyde dies and Reba survives. Lecktor stays in his cell, which links to the later films. Because it covers the same case as Red Dragon, it slots in third in story order, between Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Clarice Meets LecterSpoilers
The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, is the fourth entry in release order but the pivot of the whole story order, because it picks up directly from the final scene of Red Dragon (2002). Where that film shows Lecter already behind bars and being told about a visitor, this one shows who the visitor is: Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a trainee sent by Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) to talk to him about the case of Buffalo Bill.
The film's events run from her first cell visit to the manhunt for Jame Gumb (Ted Levine) and the rescue of Catherine Martin. Lecter breaks out of custody in Memphis midway through, and by the final scene he is free and calling Clarice from abroad as she celebrates her FBI graduation. That open ending is the hinge for the next film in the timeline, Hannibal (2001), which is set ten years later.
If you are placing it against Manhunter (1986), remember that the earlier film tells the Red Dragon story with a different cast, so it does not feed into this one. The Silence of the Lambs reached US theaters on February 14, 1991, and its runtime is 119 minutes.
Hannibal (2001): Ten Years After Buffalo BillSpoilers
Hannibal (2001), directed by Ridley Scott, is the last chapter in story order and takes place ten years after the Buffalo Bill case. Julianne Moore replaces Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, who is blamed for a drug raid that goes badly wrong and is sidelined at the FBI. Lecter, played again by Anthony Hopkins, is living quietly in Florence under a false name and working as an art scholar.
Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), Lecter's only living victim, uses his wealth and his Justice Department contacts to press for Lecter's capture, because he wants revenge. Inspector Renaldo Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) works out who the scholar really is, hoping to collect Verger's reward, and Lecter kills him. Verger's men seize Lecter and take him to the Verger estate, where Verger is left to the wild boars he keeps.
The film ends with a dinner at which Lecter drugs the corrupt Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta), a tense confrontation with Starling in which she ends up handcuffed to him, and Lecter's last appearance on a plane to a new country. Starling's future with the FBI is left unresolved. Hannibal (2001) opened in the US on February 9, 2001, almost exactly ten years after The Silence of the Lambs.
Where Do the Hannibal Series and Clarice Fit?
The NBC series Hannibal and the CBS series Clarice are television productions, so they are not slotted into the film sequence above. Cinvibe does not give them film pages, and the film timeline works without them.
The simplest approach is to run the five films as one list and treat each show as its own separate track. For a closer look at the television side, see the hannibal tv series page.
Hannibal Timeline in the Books
The Hannibal timeline in the books is a separate question from the film order above, because the films adapt Thomas Harris's novels in their own sequence. The hannibal lecter books vs movies page compares the two in detail.
Hannibal Timeline Explained: Which Order Should You Use?Spoilers
In my opinion, the cleanest way to read the Hannibal timeline is in story order, with Manhunter treated as a parallel telling. That gives you Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (2001). The reason is that Red Dragon ends with Chilton telling Lecter that a young trainee has come to see him, and The Silence of the Lambs starts on exactly that beat. It is the one link in the saga that works like a baton pass.
So, which came first, Red Dragon or The Silence of the Lambs? In story order Red Dragon comes first, since it covers Lecter's capture in 1980 and the Tooth Fairy case that follows. In release order The Silence of the Lambs came first, in 1991, and Red Dragon arrived in 2002. Paradoxically, the film that explains how Lecter was caught was made eleven years after the film in which he is already caged.
It could be argued that Hannibal Rising is the weakest place to start a first viewing, because it explains a character you have not met yet. That being said, it is the only film that puts a date on Lecter's childhood (1944), so it gives the saga its earliest fixed point. If you are new to the series, I would start with The Silence of the Lambs and then go back, and the hannibal movies in order page lays out both routes.
One more note on continuity. Hopkins plays Lecter in three films, Cox plays Lecktor in Manhunter, Ulliel plays the young Hannibal, and Foster and Moore play Starling in different films. The recasting is part of the saga's texture, and it is easy enough to read the actors as different faces of the same character.
