Who Plays Francis Dollarhyde?

Who Is Francis Dolarhyde?

Francis Dolarhyde is a lonely film lab worker who is also the killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, a man who murders whole families under a full moon. His story is told twice on film: Manhunter (1986) is an earlier adaptation of the Red Dragon story, and Red Dragon (2002) tells it again. In Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann, the credits spell his name Francis Dollarhyde and Tom Noonan plays him. In Red Dragon (2002), directed by Brett Ratner, the spelling is Francis Dolarhyde and Ralph Fiennes takes the role. Dolarhyde is the spelling used throughout, and the extra "l" in Dollarhyde is simply how the Manhunter credits print it.

The character works as the opposite number to Will Graham, the retired FBI profiler who is pulled back into the job by Jack Crawford. In Red Dragon, Dolarhyde believes in an alter ego he calls the Great Red Dragon, and the image of that dragon is tattooed on his back.

He is a different kind of villain from Hannibal Lecter. Lecter is a psychiatrist whom Graham visits in a cell for insight, while Dolarhyde is a lonely, private man whose danger sits underneath an ordinary job. Lecter is billed as Dr. Hannibal Lecktor in Manhunter, where Brian Cox plays him, and in both films he stays on the sidelines of the hunt. If you want the wider cast, the Hannibal Lecter characters page lists everyone, and Hannibal Lecter has his own profile.

Francis Dolarhyde in Manhunter and Red Dragon: The StorySpoilers

Dolarhyde follows nearly the same path in both films: a killer hiding in a normal workplace, a first gentle relationship, and a collision with Will Graham. The details differ between Manhunter and Red Dragon, so it helps to take them one at a time.

Manhunter (1986). Graham has left the FBI after his hunt for Lecktor nearly cost him his life. Crawford persuades him to return and catch a killer who targets families. Lecktor secretly passes coded messages to the killer, and that exposes Graham's home address, so Graham's wife and son are moved to safety. Dollarhyde works at a film processing lab and begins a tentative relationship with his blind coworker Reba McClane. Graham works out that the killer found his victims through their home movies, which passed through the lab where Dollarhyde works, and that clue leads him to the man himself.

Red Dragon (2002). The film opens in 1980 with Graham catching Lecter. Years later the Tooth Fairy slaughters two families and Crawford pulls Graham back in. Dolarhyde works at a company with access to film processing, and again meets Reba McClane, played by Emily Watson. A tabloid reporter, Freddy Lounds, publishes a story that provokes Dolarhyde, who kidnaps and kills him. Graham then follows the film processing trail to Dolarhyde.

In both versions the pressure on Dolarhyde comes from a conflict between his violent side and the first person who is kind to him. Noonan's version also returned to theaters: Manhunter: The Final Cut opened in US theaters on July 24, 2026 through Rialto Pictures, according to ScreenAnarchy. Who Does Dolarhyde Interact With?

Dolarhyde is defined by four relationships: with Reba McClane, with Will Graham, with the reporter Freddy Lounds and, at a distance, with Hannibal Lecter. Each one pulls him in a different direction.

Reba McClane. Reba is Dolarhyde's blind coworker, played by Joan Allen in Manhunter and by Emily Watson in Red Dragon. In both films the relationship begins gently while his violent side fights against it. In Manhunter, Dollarhyde believes Reba has betrayed him and takes her to his home, where Graham later arrives, and she is rescued. In Red Dragon, Reba is believed lost after Dolarhyde fakes his own death.

Will Graham. Graham is played by William L. Petersen in Manhunter and by Edward Norton in Red Dragon. He is the investigator who works out how Dolarhyde chose his victims and, in the end, where he lives. You can read more on Will Graham.

Freddy Lounds. The tabloid reporter, played by Stephen Lang in Manhunter and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Red Dragon, prints stories about the case and becomes a target himself. In Red Dragon his story provokes Dolarhyde into kidnapping and killing him.

Hannibal Lecter. Lecter, billed as Lecktor and played by Brian Cox in Manhunter, and played by Anthony Hopkins in Red Dragon, secretly passes messages to the killer from his cell. Jack Crawford, played by Dennis Farina in Manhunter and Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon, is the investigator who sends Graham to Lecter for help.

What Happens to Francis Dolarhyde?Spoilers

Dolarhyde dies at the end of both films, so in neither version does he survive to reach the events of The Silence of the Lambs.

In Manhunter, Graham traces the killer to his house and the two meet in a violent shootout. Dollarhyde is killed and Reba is rescued. Graham is hurt but returns to his wife and son, and the case is closed while Lecktor stays in his cell.

Red Dragon ends on a bigger scale. Dolarhyde fakes his death, then tracks down the Graham family in Florida and holds Josh at gunpoint. Graham and Dolarhyde injure each other in a brutal fight, and Molly Graham, played by Mary-Louise Parker, shoots Dolarhyde dead. So, the person who stops him in Red Dragon is Molly. Afterward Graham receives a note from Lecter, who remains imprisoned, and in the last scene Dr. Chilton tells Lecter that a young FBI trainee has come to see him. That line leads straight into The Silence of the Lambs.

The other Lecter films do not feature Dolarhyde. Hannibal (2001) and Hannibal Rising follow other stories, and the killer in The Silence of the Lambs is a different man, Buffalo Bill.

Best Francis Dolarhyde Moments

In my opinion, Dolarhyde's best scenes are the ones that show the man before the monster, and that holds in both versions.

The film lab discovery in Manhunter. It could be argued that the sharpest piece of detective work in either film is Graham working out that the killer found his victims through their home movies. The clue turns an ordinary workplace into the link between the families, and it points straight to Dollarhyde. Tom Noonan, billed second, is the actor who carries the reveal.

Reba and Dolarhyde. The tentative relationship is the emotional hinge of both films. Joan Allen in Manhunter and Emily Watson in Red Dragon give Dolarhyde something to lose, and as such the violence that follows reads as a struggle inside him as well as a threat to others.

The Lounds sequence in Red Dragon. Philip Seymour Hoffman's tabloid reporter prints a story that provokes Dolarhyde, who kidnaps and kills him. Ralph Fiennes, billed third behind Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins, plays Dolarhyde here.

The Florida fight. Red Dragon saves its biggest set piece for the Graham family home, where Dolarhyde holds Josh at gunpoint and Molly finally shoots him. Set against Manhunter's shootout at Dollarhyde's own house, I would pick Manhunter for mood and Red Dragon for scale. Red Dragon was the bigger earner, with $209 million worldwide on a $78 million budget according to Box Office Mojo, against Manhunter's $8.9 million worldwide.
