Hannibal Cast: Who Plays Who in Each Film

The Hannibal movie cast is five separate ensembles that share one character, so the quickest way to read it is film by film. Anthony Hopkins leads three of them, Brian Cox and Gaspard Ulliel lead the other two, and the investigator and the killer change almost every time.

Hannibal Rising (2007)Gaspard Ulliel, with Aaran Thomas as the young HannibalDominic West (Inspector Popil)Rhys Ifans (Vladis Grutas)

Manhunter, released in 1986, is the earliest film in the table. William L. Petersen plays the retired FBI profiler Will Graham, Tom Noonan plays the killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, and Dennis Farina plays Jack Crawford. Brian Cox sits fourth in the billing as Lecktor, which fits a role built around a few scenes in a cell. Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Stephen Lang and Chris Elliott fill out the support as Molly Graham, Reba McClane, Freddy Lounds and Zeller.

The Silence of the Lambs puts Jodie Foster first and Anthony Hopkins second, with Scott Glenn as Jack Crawford, Ted Levine as Jame Gumb (the character fans know as Buffalo Bill), Anthony Heald as Dr. Frederick Chilton, Brooke Smith as Catherine Martin, Diane Baker as Senator Ruth Martin, Kasi Lemmons as Ardelia Mapp and Frankie Faison as Barney.

In Hannibal (2001) Hopkins moves to the top of the billing, Julianne Moore takes over as Clarice M. Starling, and Gary Oldman plays Mason Verger, the wealthy man who wants revenge, listed third in the cast on TMDB. Ray Liotta plays Paul Krendler, Giancarlo Giannini plays Insp. Renaldo Pazzi, and Francesca Neri plays Allegra Pazzi.

Red Dragon pairs Edward Norton and Hopkins with Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson as Reba McClane, Harvey Keitel as Jack Crawford, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddy Lounds and Mary-Louise Parker as Molly Graham. Hannibal Rising is the youngest ensemble, with Gong Li as Lady Murasaki, Kevin McKidd as Petras Kolnas, Richard Brake as Enrikas Dortlich and Helena-Lia Tachovská as Hannibal's sister Mischa Lecter.

Television is a separate cast altogether. The NBC series Hannibal has its own ensemble, with names such as Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne and Caroline Dhavernas, and none of them appear in the five films above. The same goes for the CBS series Clarice. For that side of the saga, see the Hannibal TV series page, and for the full roster of film roles, see Hannibal characters.

Who Directed the Hannibal Movies and Who Scored Them?

Five films have had five different directors, and none of them has directed a second Lecter picture. Michael Mann directed Manhunter (1986), Jonathan Demme directed The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Ridley Scott directed Hannibal (2001), Brett Ratner directed Red Dragon (2002) and Peter Webber directed Hannibal Rising (2007).

That turnover shapes the saga more than the recasting does. Mann's Manhunter runs 120 minutes and earned about $8.9 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, with no budget on record. It returned to US theaters as Manhunter: The Final Cut on July 24, 2026 via Rialto Pictures, with producer Richard Roth and cinematographer Dante Spinotti among the credits. Demme's film cost $19 million and took in about $273 million worldwide, and its New York premiere took place on January 30, 1991. Scott's Hannibal (2001) was the most expensive of the five, with an $87 million budget, a $58 million opening weekend and about $352 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. Ratner's Red Dragon cost $78 million and grossed about $209 million, and Webber's Hannibal Rising cost $50 million and grossed about $82 million. The full comparison of budgets and grosses is in the Hannibal box office guide.

The composers change just as often. Michel Rubini scored Manhunter, and its soundtrack also features Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and Graham's Theme. Howard Shore composed The Silence of the Lambs, which also uses Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus and Hip Priest by The Fall. Hans Zimmer wrote the music for Hannibal (2001), Danny Elfman for Red Dragon and Shigeru Umebayashi for Hannibal Rising. So, when someone asks who composed the music for Hannibal, the answer starts with which film they mean, since no single composer carries across the series. More on the scores is in the Hannibal soundtrack guide.

For how the films relate to the books, see the Hannibal Lecter books vs movies page.

Hannibal Cast Old and New: Who Returned and Who Was Recast?

Hannibal Lecter has had three lead actors across the five films, and Anthony Hopkins is the only one to return, appearing in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon. Brian Cox played the part first, as Lecktor in Manhunter, and Gaspard Ulliel played the younger man in Hannibal Rising, with Aaran Thomas as the boy.

Supporting players return more often than the leads do. Frankie Faison plays Barney in The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon and appears as Barney Matthews in Hannibal (2001), which makes him the most reliable face in the saga outside Hopkins. Anthony Heald plays Dr. Frederick Chilton in both The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, while Benjamin Hendrickson played the role in Manhunter. Dan Butler turns up in Manhunter as Jimmy Price and again in The Silence of the Lambs as Roden.

The Red Dragon story shows recasting at its plainest, because Manhunter and Red Dragon tell it twice. Will Graham goes from William L. Petersen to Edward Norton, Francis Dollarhyde (spelled Dolarhyde in Red Dragon) goes from Tom Noonan to Ralph Fiennes, Jack Crawford goes from Dennis Farina to Harvey Keitel, and Reba McClane goes from Joan Allen to Emily Watson. Freddy Lounds passes from Stephen Lang to Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Molly Graham from Kim Greist to Mary-Louise Parker. Jack Crawford was also played by Scott Glenn in The Silence of the Lambs. The other recast is Clarice Starling, who moves from Jodie Foster in that film to Julianne Moore in Hannibal (2001).

In my opinion, the Clarice swap tells you the most, because Hannibal (2001) is set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case and asks the audience to accept an older, more bruised Starling in a different actor. The Will Graham swap is easier to take, since Manhunter and Red Dragon are two directors reading one setup, and Cox against Hopkins is perhaps the clearest case of a cell-bound Lecter played two ways.

The cast list has no confirmed future. Universal is reportedly developing a new Lecter movie, according to a January 30, 2025 report from CBR citing insider Daniel Richtman, but no filmmakers or cast are attached, it is unknown whether Hopkins would return, and Universal had not commented. The latest reported status is in the new Hannibal movie guide. If you are new to the saga, start with the Hannibal movies in order guide, and for the main hub see Hannibal movies.

Facts

FAQs

Who wrote the Hannibal books?

Thomas Harris wrote the novels that the Hannibal Lecter films adapt. The differences between the books and the films are compared in the Hannibal Lecter books vs movies guide.

Is the Hannibal TV cast the same as the movie cast?

No. The NBC series Hannibal is a separate television production with its own actors, including Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne and Caroline Dhavernas, and the CBS series Clarice is separate again. The five theatrical films have their own casts, led by Anthony Hopkins in three of them.

Who composed the music for Hannibal?

It depends on the film. Michel Rubini scored Manhunter, Howard Shore scored The Silence of the Lambs, Hans Zimmer scored Hannibal (2001), Danny Elfman scored Red Dragon and Shigeru Umebayashi scored Hannibal Rising.

Who was originally cast as Hannibal Lecter?

Brian Cox was the first actor to play the character on film, as Dr. Hannibal Lecktor in Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann. Anthony Hopkins took the role five years later in The Silence of the Lambs and returned for Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon, while Gaspard Ulliel played the younger Lecter in Hannibal Rising.

Which actor turned down the role of Hannibal Lecter?

Studio and trade coverage of these films does not name an actor who turned the part down. The order runs Brian Cox in Manhunter, then Anthony Hopkins from 1991, then Gaspard Ulliel as the young Hannibal.

Why did the TV show Hannibal get canceled?

The reasons the NBC series Hannibal ended belong to television history, not to the five films, so the film cast does not explain them. The series is followed in the Hannibal TV series guide.
