Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs: Who Plays Him

Scott Glenn plays Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, as the senior FBI agent who assigns trainee Clarice Starling to question Hannibal Lecter. Dennis Farina played him in Manhunter (1986) and Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon (2002), so each of the three films has its own Crawford.

Who Is Jack Crawford? The FBI Agent Behind Every Lecter Case

Jack Crawford is the senior FBI agent who sends other investigators to Hannibal Lecter, and he is credited under that name in all three films where he appears. He starts each case: he recruits, he assigns and he points people toward the cell. The films draw on the novels of Thomas Harris, and the character carries the same job from page to screen.

His first screen appearance is in Manhunter 1986, directed by Michael Mann, where Dennis Farina plays him as the old boss of retired profiler Will Graham. In that film Lecter is spelled Lecktor and played by Brian Cox, and Crawford persuades Graham to return to help catch a killer who murders families under a full moon. Farina is billed third.

In The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, Scott Glenn plays Crawford, also billed third. Here he pulls Clarice Starling from her studies and sends her to question the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, about a killer called Buffalo Bill.

Red Dragon 2002, directed by Brett Ratner, casts Harvey Keitel in the part, billed fifth. That film retells the Manhunter story with Hopkins as Lecter and Edward Norton as Graham.

He is not among the fifteen top billed cast members of Hannibal (2001) or of Hannibal Rising, which follows the young Lecter. For the wider ensemble, see hannibal characters.

Jack Crawford's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers

Crawford's arc is a repeated pattern rather than a change: in each film he recruits someone damaged or inexperienced and sends them toward Lecter.

In Manhunter he asks Graham to come back after the hunt for Lecktor nearly cost Graham his life. Graham studies the crime scenes and visits Lecktor in prison for advice. Lecktor, however, secretly passes coded messages to the killer, which exposes Graham's home address, and Graham's wife and son are moved to safety. The case ends with Dollarhyde dead and Reba McClane rescued, and Graham returns to his family.

In The Silence of the Lambs the recruit is Clarice. Lecter trades hints for stories from her own life, the case is complicated when Catherine Martin turns out to be a US senator's daughter, and Lecter later escapes by killing his guards. Clarice works out Jame Gumb's identity on her own and rescues Catherine. Crawford is the person who sent her to Lecter in the first place.

In Red Dragon, a killer dubbed the Tooth Fairy slaughters two families, and Crawford pulls Graham back in. Graham goes to Lecter, who offers cryptic guidance and secretly sends the killer messages. Molly Graham shoots Francis Dolarhyde dead. The film closes with Dr. Chilton telling Lecter that a young FBI trainee has come to see him, which leads straight into the events of The Silence of the Lambs.

That last scene ties the two stories together, since the trainee in Chilton's line is the one Crawford sends to Lecter in the 1991 film. Why was Jack Crawford recast? Each film is a separate production with its own director and cast, and Red Dragon is itself a remake of Manhunter, so Farina, Glenn and Keitel were each hired for a different adaptation.

Who Does Jack Crawford Work With and Against?

Crawford's closest working ties are with the two investigators he sends to Lecter, Will Graham and Clarice Starling, and his relationship with Lecter himself is always indirect.

With will graham he is a former boss asking for a favor. In Manhunter and Red Dragon he talks a retired profiler out of a quiet life in Florida, and the cost lands on Graham's family. That makes Crawford the person who reopens the wound each time.

With clarice starling he is a senior agent and a gatekeeper. He pulls her from her studies and sends her to question Lecter in his cell. Was Crawford in love with Clarice? Nothing in the plots of the films frames it that way: he is her superior at the Bureau who sends her to the interview. That is a reading of the films, and others may see it differently.

With hannibal lecter he never builds a bond. Lecter is a resource he sends other people to use, and in Manhunter and Red Dragon that resource secretly feeds the killer messages. Crawford's pursuit of the killers, buffalo bill silence of the lambs and francis dolarhyde, is what puts him in each film. For the book side of the series, see hannibal lecter books vs movies.

Does Jack Crawford Die in The Silence of the Lambs?Spoilers

No film shows Jack Crawford dying, including The Silence of the Lambs, which ends with Clarice killing Gumb in the dark basement and saving Catherine Martin.

In The Silence of the Lambs the case closes with Clarice graduating from the FBI Academy, and Lecter's call at the graduation party leaves him at large. Nothing in the ending turns on a fate for Crawford.

In Manhunter the case closes with Dollarhyde dead and Graham back with his wife and son. In Red Dragon, Molly shoots Dolarhyde dead and Lecter stays imprisoned. Neither ending is built around a death for Crawford.

What happened to Jack in Hannibal (2001)? In that film, Starling is blamed for a deadly drug raid and sidelined, and Mason Verger pushes the Justice Department to capture Lecter. The plot centers on Starling, Lecter, Verger, Inspector Pazzi and Paul Krendler, and Crawford is not among the fifteen top billed cast.

Best Jack Crawford Moments: A Ranked Opinion

In my opinion, Crawford's best scene is the one in The Silence of the Lambs where he sends Clarice to the cell, because the whole film hangs on that assignment. Everything that follows, the trades of hints for personal stories, the Memphis transfer, the basement, begins with a senior agent sending a trainee to question Lecter.

My second pick is the end of Red Dragon, where Chilton tells Lecter that a young FBI trainee has come to see him. It is a neat hand off to the 1991 film, and perhaps it works because the audience knows who sends that trainee. Red Dragon is a remake of Manhunter, so the film is also reaching back to the earlier version of this world.

Third, in Manhunter, Farina's Crawford persuades Graham to return after Graham was nearly killed catching Lecktor. It could be argued that this is the most morally uncomfortable of his scenes, since the cost to Graham's family is plain from the start. As such, if you are new to the series, watch Silence first for the cleanest version of Crawford, then Manhunter for the grittiest. Our hannibal movies in order guide sets out the full sequence.
