What Is Hannibal Rising About?

Hannibal Rising is the origin story of Hannibal Lecter, set in Lithuania in 1944 and then in postwar France.

The story opens as the war reaches the Baltic region. Young Hannibal, played by Aaran Thomas, lives in a castle with his family. They flee to a hunting lodge in the woods, but a Soviet tank wrecks their refuge, and an explosion kills nearly everyone except Hannibal and his little sister Mischa. A band of looters led by Vladis Grutas then takes shelter in the lodge, and Mischa does not survive the winter.

Years later the castle has become an orphanage, and Hannibal escapes to Paris to find his aunt, Lady Murasaki. From there the film becomes a revenge story with a medical school in the middle of it. If you want the film placed against the rest of the saga, the hannibal movies in order guide shows where it sits in release order and in story order.

Hannibal Rising Soundtrack and Score

Shigeru Umebayashi composed the score for Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber, and he is the only composer credited with the film's music. No soundtrack album and no featured songs are recorded for the film, so the score carries all of its music.

That gives the composer a wide canvas. The story runs from a snowbound Lithuanian lodge in 1944, where young Hannibal Lecter and his sister Mischa try to survive the war, to a Paris household shaped by the Japanese traditions of Lady Murasaki. The score is the thread that ties those two settings together, and it follows Hannibal as he grows from a frightened boy into a young man with a single purpose.

If you are hunting for a song list, there is nothing to point to here, since no songs are credited and no album has been released under the film's name. The music credit begins and ends with Umebayashi. For the franchise as a whole, including the other composers and the songs used in the earlier films, see the hannibal soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Hannibal Rising Plot Explained in FullSpoilers

The full plot follows Hannibal from the orphanage to France, then back to Lithuania, and finally to Canada, as he hunts the men who killed his sister. After the war, haunted by what happened to Mischa, he escapes the orphanage that was once his home and travels to France, where his widowed aunt, Lady Murasaki, takes him in and teaches him Japanese culture and swordsmanship.

The first break comes when a local butcher insults her, and the teenage Hannibal kills him with a sword. Inspector Popil begins to suspect him, but Lady Murasaki's influence helps clear him. Hannibal then becomes the youngest student admitted to medical school in France and works with cadavers. Using a truth drug on himself, he brings back the buried memories of the men who killed his sister.

He then hunts them one by one, starting with Dortlich in Lithuania and moving on to Milko, who is sent after him by Grutas. Lady Murasaki begs him to stop, but he refuses, saying he made a promise to Mischa. Grutas, now a criminal in France, kidnaps Lady Murasaki to lure him out. Hannibal forces Kolnas to reveal where Grutas is hiding and kills him when Kolnas goes for a gun.

On Grutas's houseboat, Grutas claims that Hannibal also ate his sister's remains, and Hannibal kills him brutally. Lady Murasaki escapes, the houseboat burns, and Hannibal is presumed dead. He survives, tracks down the last member of the gang, Grentz, in Canada, and moves on to a new life in North America.

When Did Hannibal Rising Come Out and How Did It Open?

Hannibal Rising opened in France on February 7, 2007, two days before its US release on February 9, 2007, according to Box Office Mojo. The UK release was also February 9, 2007, and Australia came a day earlier on February 8, 2007 (all three are reported dates). No premiere date, city or venue is documented for the film.

In the US, Box Office Mojo records an opening weekend of $13 million. The film finished with $27.7 million domestic and $54.5 million internationally, for $82 million worldwide on a $50 million budget (the budget comes from The Numbers). Its top international markets were Italy, Japan and Russia/CIS.

That is the lowest worldwide total of the four main films, behind The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). The film was rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia. For the full picture, see the hannibal box office page.

Hannibal Rising Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Hannibal Rising shows Hannibal finishing his revenge, being believed dead and starting over in North America, which is how the film hands him on to the rest of the saga. He kills Grutas on the houseboat after Grutas claims he ate Mischa, the boat burns and Hannibal is assumed dead, though he walks out of the woods alive. He then finds the last gang member, Bronys Grentz, in Saskatchewan, Canada, and the film closes with him settling in Canada and later the United States.

What does Grutas's claim do? In my opinion, it is the film's central decision, because it hands Hannibal a motive for the worst thing about him. In The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, Lecter trades clues for personal details about Clarice Starling, and his own past stays closed. Hannibal Rising opens that door and tells you what is behind it. It could be argued that this is why the film divides people: explaining a villain tends to shrink him, and the $82 million worldwide gross, the lowest of the four main films, hints that many viewers did not want the explanation.

Is Hannibal Rising any good? Perhaps the fairest answer is that the Lithuanian winter and the Paris half work better as a revenge thriller than as a case file on Lecter. Gaspard Ulliel and Gong Li carry the film, and the Grutas gang is a memorable set of villains. It does not need to be read as canon for the others, so you can watch it before red dragon 2002 or after hannibal 2001 and lose little.

Is there a Hannibal Rising 2? No studio or trade source has announced a sequel or any dated new Lecter film, and the latest status sits on the new hannibal movie page. If you are new to the saga, my advice is to start with The Silence of the Lambs and leave this film for last, so the mystery of Lecter survives as long as possible.

Where Was Hannibal Rising Filmed?

Hannibal Rising is a France, United Kingdom and United States production, according to The Numbers, and its story moves between Lithuania, Paris and Saskatchewan. Specific shooting locations are not documented for the film.

The settings matter to the plot, though. Lithuania gives the opening its wartime castle, hunting lodge and orphanage, Paris is where Hannibal lives with Lady Murasaki and studies medicine, and Canada is where the final gang member is found. For the full chronology of those stops, see the hannibal timeline.

Does Anthony Hopkins play in Hannibal Rising?

For every film, see where to watch hannibal.

Is Hannibal Rising any good, and why is it rated so low?

That is a matter of opinion, and the film divides viewers. It earned $82 million worldwide on a $50 million budget, the lowest total of the four main films. A common argument is that explaining Lecter's motive weakens a character who worked best as a mystery, and the ending explained section takes that up.
