How Many Hannibal Movies Are There? All Five Films

Five theatrical movies feature Hannibal Lecter: Manhunter (1986), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007). Four are main films and Manhunter is the spin-off, since Brian Cox plays the character there (spelled Lecktor) in a story that sits apart from the Anthony Hopkins films. Television is outside the film count, although the Hannibal TV series has its own page. The films draw on the Lecter novels of Thomas Harris, and the way each one treats that material is covered in Hannibal Lecter books vs movies.

Manhunter (1986): The First Lecter Film

Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann, reached US theaters on August 15, 1986 and runs 120 minutes, which makes it the earliest Lecter movie by a full five years. It is an earlier adaptation of the story that Red Dragon would retell in 2002. William L. Petersen plays Will Graham, a retired FBI profiler who was nearly killed while catching the psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox). His old boss Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) asks him back to find a killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, and Graham visits Lecktor in his cell for insight into the killer's mind. Tom Noonan plays Francis Dollarhyde, and Michel Rubini composed the score, with songs such as In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly. Box Office Mojo records about $8.9 million worldwide and no published budget. Rialto Pictures reissued it in 2026 as Manhunter: The Final Cut, which is the same film in a new cut and not a sixth movie. The full entry is at Manhunter 1986.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Starling Meets Lecter

The Silence of the Lambs, directed by Jonathan Demme, opened in the US on February 14, 1991 and runs 119 minutes. Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee whom senior agent Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) sends to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a psychiatrist jailed for murder and cannibalism. The bureau is hunting a killer known as Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine, credited as Jame Gumb), and Lecter offers clues only in exchange for details of Clarice's own past. Howard Shore wrote the score, and the soundtrack includes Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus. According to Box Office Mojo it cost $19 million to make and took in about $273 million worldwide, a return of roughly fourteen times its budget. Read more on the silence of the lambs.

Hannibal (2001): The Sequel in Florence

Hannibal (2001), directed by Ridley Scott, opened in the US on February 9, 2001 and runs 131 minutes, the longest of the five. Hopkins returns as Lecter, and Julianne Moore takes over the role of Clarice Starling. The story picks up ten years after the Buffalo Bill case, with Starling blamed for a drug raid that went badly wrong and Lecter living quietly in Florence under a false name as an art scholar. Gary Oldman plays Mason Verger, a rich and badly disfigured man who survived an attack by Lecter and now offers money to anyone who can find him, while Ray Liotta plays Paul Krendler and Giancarlo Giannini plays the Italian police inspector Renaldo Pazzi. Hans Zimmer composed the music. Box Office Mojo lists an $87 million budget and about $352 million worldwide, the biggest gross of the series, plus an opening weekend of roughly $58 million. The film has its own entry at Hannibal 2001.

Red Dragon (2002): Graham Returns

Red Dragon, directed by Brett Ratner, opened in the US on October 4, 2002 and runs 124 minutes. Edward Norton plays Will Graham, Anthony Hopkins plays Lecter for the third time, and Ralph Fiennes plays the killer Francis Dolarhyde, with Emily Watson as Reba McClane, Harvey Keitel as Jack Crawford and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddy Lounds. The story opens in 1980, when Graham consults Lecter on a series of murders, spots the clue that exposes him, and survives a violent struggle before Lecter is locked away. Years later Crawford persuades Graham to return to the hunt for a killer who murders families during full moons, and Graham goes back to Lecter's cell for help. Danny Elfman scored it. Box Office Mojo lists a $78 million budget and about $209 million worldwide. Details sit at Red Dragon 2002.

Hannibal Rising (2007): The Origin Story

Hannibal Rising, directed by Peter Webber, opened in the US on February 9, 2007 and runs 121 minutes. Gaspard Ulliel plays the adult Lecter and Aaran Thomas plays him as a boy, with Gong Li as Lady Murasaki and Rhys Ifans as the looter Vladis Grutas. The film begins in 1944 Lithuania, where young Hannibal and his sister Mischa are caught up in the war, and later follows him to Paris to find his aunt. Shigeru Umebayashi composed the score. Box Office Mojo lists a $50 million budget and about $82 million worldwide, the lowest gross of the four main films. The page for Hannibal Rising covers it in full.

In What Order Were the Hannibal Lecter Movies Released?

The Hannibal Lecter movies were released in this order: Manhunter (1986), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007). Story order is different, running Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (2001). If you want a plan for sitting down with them, Hannibal movies in order lays out both routes.

Are the Hannibal Lecter Movies Connected?

The Hopkins films connect directly, Hannibal Rising is a prequel, and Manhunter stands alone. The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon all star Anthony Hopkins, and a few faces carry between them: Frankie Faison plays Barney in all three, and Anthony Heald plays Dr. Chilton in The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon. Red Dragon was released last of the three, yet its events come first. Manhunter and Red Dragon tell the same story with different casts, so they cannot sit in one continuity (Dan Butler turns up in both Manhunter and The Silence of the Lambs, but as different characters, so that is a casting overlap and nothing more). Hannibal Rising goes back to 1944 with Ulliel, a younger Lecter who is not played by Hopkins.

How Do the Five Films Compare?

The five films split into two kinds of story: cell-bound duets between a hunter and Lecter, and larger tales that carry Lecter out into the world. In my opinion, that split explains the money as much as the casting. The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon both hinge on a visit to a cell, where an agent trades information with a caged psychiatrist, and Manhunter stages the same visit with Petersen and Cox. Hannibal (2001) breaks the pattern by moving Lecter to Florence and giving Mason Verger a revenge plot, and Hannibal Rising leaves the cell behind entirely for a 1944 Lithuanian hunting lodge.

The numbers back this up. The Silence of the Lambs turned a $19 million budget into about $273 million worldwide, while Hannibal (2001) spent $87 million for about $352 million, the top gross and the best opening weekend at roughly $58 million. Red Dragon, a remake of the Manhunter story with Hopkins back in the cell, ended near $209 million worldwide on a $78 million budget. Hannibal Rising, the only film without Hopkins in the title role, made about $82 million on $50 million. It could be argued that audiences came for Hopkins, and the origin story had the hardest job without him.

For a newcomer, the practical pick is The Silence of the Lambs first, since it is the shortest route to the character at his most effective (119 minutes). Manhunter then works as a contrast, because Mann gives Lecktor far less screen time and builds the dread around the Tooth Fairy case instead. Those are opinions, and Hannibal movies ranked argues the full order.
