About the Release Order
The Hannibal Lecter films reached theaters in this order: Manhunter (1986), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007). That is the sequence audiences saw, and it is the safest default if you want the series to unfold the way it was released.
- Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme
- Hannibal (2001), directed by Ridley Scott
- Red Dragon (2002), directed by Brett Ratner
- Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber
Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann, came first and is the odd one out. It follows the retired FBI profiler Will Graham, played by William L. Petersen, as he is pulled back to hunt the killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, with Brian Cox playing the psychiatrist as Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (the film spells it that way). It runs 120 minutes and took about $8.9 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which makes it a small release for a character who became far better known. Rialto Pictures has since issued a 2026 Final Cut of the film.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, is the film that turned the saga into a franchise. Jodie Foster plays the FBI trainee Clarice Starling, Anthony Hopkins plays Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and Ted Levine plays the killer Jame Gumb, known as Buffalo Bill. It cost $19 million and took about $273 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Hannibal (2001), directed by Ridley Scott, is set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case. Hopkins returns, Julianne Moore takes over as Starling, and Gary Oldman appears as the disfigured millionaire Mason Verger, while Lecter lives quietly in Florence as an art scholar. It had an $87 million budget and about $352 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.
Red Dragon (2002), directed by Brett Ratner, brings Hopkins back for a third turn as Lecter in a second telling of the Tooth Fairy case that Manhunter also covers. Edward Norton plays Will Graham and Ralph Fiennes plays Francis Dolarhyde, the killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy. It cost $78 million and earned about $209 million worldwide.
Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber, goes back to the character's childhood in 1944 Lithuania with Gaspard Ulliel as the young Lecter and Gong Li as Lady Murasaki. It cost $50 million and took about $82 million worldwide.
No sixth film is confirmed. A January 2025 report from CBR, citing the leaker Daniel Richtman, said Universal is developing a new Hannibal Lecter movie, but no filmmakers or cast were named and Universal had not commented. Treat it as an unconfirmed rumor, and follow any change on the new hannibal movie page.
About the Chronological Order
The Hannibal chronological order is Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (2001), which follows the character from a boy in wartime Lithuania to a man living under a false name in Florence.
- Hannibal Rising (2007), set from 1944
- Red Dragon (2002), opening in 1980
- Manhunter (1986), the earlier version of the Red Dragon case
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Hannibal (2001), ten years after the Buffalo Bill case
The first three entries need a small explanation. Hannibal Rising opens in 1944 with the young Lecter, his family and his sister Mischa, then follows him to Paris and his aunt, Lady Murasaki. Red Dragon begins in 1980, when Will Graham captures Lecter, and then jumps ahead to the hunt for the Tooth Fairy.
Manhunter tells that same Tooth Fairy case, so it is best treated as a swap for Red Dragon rather than a second chapter. It has a different cast and its own version of the doctor, played by Brian Cox, and it does not continue into the Starling films. Putting it third is a convenience for people who want every title in one list. Watching both back to back repeats the same investigation, from Jack Crawford asking Graham to return to the visit to Lecter's cell.
From The Silence of the Lambs onward, the story is direct. Hannibal (2001) picks up a decade later with Starling's career in trouble and Mason Verger hunting the man who maimed him. Jack Crawford, the FBI boss who sends both Graham and Starling to the doctor, appears in three of the five films: in Manhunter played by Dennis Farina, in Silence by Scott Glenn and in Red Dragon by Harvey Keitel.

Where to Start: Which Hannibal Order Should You Pick?
In my opinion, start with The Silence of the Lambs (1991), because it is the best known film, it runs 119 minutes, and it needs nothing before it. It introduces Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling cleanly, with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins carrying almost every scene they share. Every other film is easier to place once you have seen it.
So, which route suits you? Here are the three I would suggest.
- New to the series: watch Silence, then Hannibal (2001), which follows it by ten years, then Red Dragon for the earlier Graham case.
- Release order completist: begin with Manhunter and move straight down the list, with Hannibal Rising last.
- Story order: begin with Hannibal Rising and follow the chronological list, picking either Red Dragon or Manhunter for the Tooth Fairy case.
It could be argued that story order is the weaker first watch, since Hannibal Rising explains a character who works better when the earlier films leave him a mystery. That being said, it needs no prior knowledge, so it also works as a stand alone prequel if you would rather meet Lecter as a boy. If you only plan to see it once, I would hold it until the end.
On Red Dragon versus Manhunter, I would pick one first and treat the other as a comparison. Red Dragon has Hopkins and the bigger cast, while Manhunter is the moodier, quieter take from Michael Mann, with Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde. Perhaps the fairest approach is Red Dragon in a marathon and Manhunter afterward as the original.
Do you need to watch a television series first? No. The five films stand as complete stories without one, and the NBC series Hannibal and the CBS series Clarice are television, not part of this film order (see the hannibal tv series page). FAQs
In what order were the Hannibal Lecter movies released?
The Hannibal Lecter movies were released in this order: Manhunter (1986), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007). That is five films across 21 years, with Hopkins as Lecter in three of them.
What is the correct order of the Hannibal movies?
There are two valid orders. Release order is Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising, while story order is Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (2001). Manhunter and Red Dragon cover the same case, so you only need one of them in a chronological run.
Do you have to watch the Hannibal movies before the series?
No. The five films stand as complete stories, and none of them requires a television series first. The NBC series Hannibal and the CBS series Clarice are television, so they sit outside the film watch order.
How to watch Hannibal Rising?
Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber, can be watched first for story order or last as a release order finale. It follows the young Lecter from 1944 Lithuania to Paris and needs no knowledge of the other films.
In what order do you watch Silence of the Lambs?
The Silence of the Lambs is second in release order and fourth in story order, and it works as a first watch. Its direct follow up is Hannibal (2001), set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case, while Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising are prequels.
Should I watch the Hannibal movies in order?
Either order works, because most of the films follow separate cases. The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (2001) are directly connected, and Manhunter and Red Dragon retell the same story, so watching those two back to back repeats the plot.
How long are all the Hannibal Lecter movies?
Watching all 5 Hannibal Lecter movies takes 10 hours and 15 minutes, or 8 hours and 15 minutes for the 4 main films without the spin-offs. The longest is Hannibal at 2 hours and 11 minutes and the shortest is The Silence of the Lambs at 1 hour and 59 minutes.
