What Is Insidious Chapter 3 About?

Insidious: Chapter 3 follows teenager Quinn Brenner, who in 2007 asks the retired medium Elise Rainier to help her reach her mother, Lily, who died a year earlier. Elise senses something dangerous close by and tells Quinn to stop trying to contact the dead.

Quinn does not get much of a chance to listen. Soon afterward she is hit by a car while distracted by a strange figure down the street, and she breaks both legs. Confined to the family apartment with her father Sean and her brother Alex, she begins to see and feel a menacing presence in the rooms around her.

That is the whole engine of the film: a girl who cannot leave her bed, a home that stops feeling safe, and a retired medium whose friend has to convince her to help. If you are wondering whether you need the earlier films first, you do not. The story stands alone, and the insidious movies in order page shows where it sits in the wider series.

Insidious: Chapter 3 Soundtrack and Score

Joseph Bishara composed the score for Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), and it was released as the 22 track score album "Insidious: Chapter 3" on Void Records on June 5, 2015, the same day the film opened in the US.

The film has no featured songs. The music is the score alone, so the soundtrack is built from Bishara's string work, low drones and sudden stings rather than from needle drops or an original song. That suits a ghost story set in a single apartment, where the scares depend on what the viewer hears just before anything appears on screen.

Bishara also appears in the film as the Lipstick-Face Demon, a role he has played across the series. In my opinion, that gives the franchise an unusual link between the person who writes the sound of the Further and one of the faces that haunts it.

Insidious Chapter 3 Plot SummarySpoilers

The full plot of Insidious: Chapter 3 runs from a teenager's attempt to reach her dead mother to a rescue inside the Further, the spirit world the series keeps returning to.

After the accident, Quinn is haunted at home by a spirit wearing an oxygen mask, and she recognizes it as the figure she saw in the street before the car hit her. Her father Sean goes to Elise for help. She is grieving her late husband, and whenever she enters the Further she is hunted by a Bride in Black. Her friend Carl convinces her to help.

Alex also calls in Specs and Tucker, two amateur ghost hunters. During their visit Quinn is briefly possessed and lashes out. Elise arrives and works out that the spirit lures people into the Further so it can feed on them. She decides the only way to stop it is to go in herself, and she brings Specs and Tucker with her.

Inside the Further, Elise fights off the Bride in Black and then meets what appears to be her husband, who urges her to take her own life. She sees that it is the breathing spirit in disguise and demands that it free Quinn. Elise cannot beat it alone, and a message from a dead neighbor leads her to call on Lily's spirit. Lily gives Quinn the courage to rip off the creature's mask, and the entity suffocates and is destroyed.

Elise says goodbye to the family and leaves with Specs and Tucker, and the three agree to work together. Back at her home, a final shot of a red faced demon watching her from behind ties the story to the earlier films, as the ending explained breakdown goes on to cover.

Insidious Chapter 3 Release Date and Opening

Insidious: Chapter 3 opened in US theaters on June 5, 2015, with a UK release on the same day and an Australian release on July 23, 2015. The US date is confirmed, while the UK and Australian dates are reported.

The date did not start there. Trade coverage in October 2014 listed the release as May 29, 2015, before it moved a week later. It opened to $22.7 million in 3,002 US theaters, according to The Numbers. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment issued the home video release on September 22, 2015.

The ratings differ by territory. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 15 in the UK and M in Australia. For how it performed after opening, see the Insidious box office page.

Insidious Chapter 3 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Insidious: Chapter 3 resolves Quinn's haunting and quietly sets up the rest of the series. Quinn destroys the entity with the help of her mother's spirit and escapes the Further, and Elise gives the family some parting words, including a message from Lily.

The destruction itself is a neat piece of creature logic, and as a monster fan I like that. The thing wears an oxygen mask and is defeated when Quinn rips it off and it suffocates. A spirit that feeds on the living is undone by the one thing a living person does without thinking.

The emotional hinge, in my opinion, is Elise. Earlier the entity wears the form of her husband and urges her to take her own life, and she recognizes the trick and demands that it free Quinn. Perhaps that is why she cannot finish the job alone: Lily has to step in, and a mother's spirit gives her daughter the courage to act. It reads as a story about grief asking the dead for help and getting an answer.

The last beat is the franchise link. Elise teams up with Specs and Tucker as a ghost hunting trio, and then, back at her home, her dog barks at something unseen while a red faced demon is shown watching her from behind. It could be argued that this is the film's one cheap shiver, but it works as a bridge to Insidious (2011) and Insidious: Chapter 2. For how everything lines up, see the Insidious timeline.

Where Was Insidious Chapter 3 Filmed?

No real shooting locations for Insidious: Chapter 3 have been confirmed in studio or trade coverage. On screen, the story plays out in two places: the Brenner family apartment, where Quinn is confined after the accident, and the Further, the spirit world Elise enters to fight the entity.

The setting is also tied to a date, since the film begins in 2007. For more on the spirit world, see the Further.
