Insidious Box Office Worldwide: Every Film's Gross and Budget
The six Insidious films have grossed about $916 million worldwide, with $406 million of that from the domestic market and $510 million from international markets. The table lists each film in release order, with budgets and grosses from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers.
| Film | Budget | Domestic | International | Worldwide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insidious (2011) | $1.5 million | $54.0 million | $46.1 million | $100.1 million |
| Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) | $5 million | $83.6 million | $78.3 million | $161.9 million |

| Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) | $18 million | $66.1 million | $105.3 million | $171.5 million |
| Series total | $60.5 million | $405.8 million | $510.0 million | $915.8 million |
Which Insidious film made the most money? Insidious: The Red Door, directed by Patrick Wilson, leads the series at about $189 million worldwide, and its international gross of $106.9 million is also the best of the six. The domestic record belongs to Insidious: Chapter 2, directed by James Wan, at $83.6 million.
The newest entry, Insidious: Out of the Further, directed by Jacob Chase, opened in the US on August 21, 2026 through Sony Pictures Releasing. Box Office Mojo shows a $25.1 million domestic opening from 3,303 theaters and $171.5 million worldwide as of November 3, 2026. That puts it about $1.4 million behind Insidious: The Last Key, directed by Adam Robitel, so the order of those two could still change while the new film plays.
Box Office Mojo and The Numbers disagree on a few figures. Box Office Mojo lists a lower international and worldwide gross for Insidious: Chapter 3, directed by Leigh Whannell, and a different international total for The Last Key. The table follows The Numbers for both, and for Chapter 3 those figures match TMDB revenue. The original Insidious (2011), directed by James Wan, opens the table.

Insidious Box Office vs Budget: How the Series Has Held Up
In my opinion, the Insidious box office story is cheap films with a steady floor: all six cleared $100 million worldwide on budgets between $1.5 million and $18 million. A grosses table can hide that, so here is the budget side.
Was Insidious a low budget movie? Yes, and Insidious (2011) is the extreme case. It cost $1.5 million and grossed $100.1 million worldwide, about 67 times its budget and the highest multiple of the six. Insidious: Chapter 2 raised the spend to $5 million and returned about 32 times that, with $161.9 million.
Then the ratios settle. Chapter 3 returned about 12 times its $10 million budget, The Last Key about 17 times, The Red Door about 12 times its $16 million, and Out of the Further about 9.5 times its $18 million. It could be argued that this is a franchise paying more for each film while earning roughly the same, which squeezes the multiple without ever threatening the profit.
Is Insidious 5 a hit or a flop? Insidious 5 is Insidious: The Red Door, and the numbers say hit. It grossed $189.1 million against $16 million, the best worldwide total in the series, about a decade after Chapter 2 and with Patrick Wilson stepping behind the camera. As such, I would read it as proof that the series still had an audience once the original cast returned: Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins and Lin Shaye all came back.
International audiences carry more of the weight over time. The first two films earned slightly more at home than abroad, with Chapter 2 splitting $83.6 million domestic to $78.3 million international. From Chapter 3 onward, international has led every time, and The Last Key, The Red Door and Out of the Further each passed $105 million overseas. That being said, domestic grosses have held steady too, between $52 million and $84 million for all six.
What does the Out of the Further result suggest? At $171.5 million on an $18 million budget, it carries the highest spend in the series and the lowest multiple of the six, about 9.5 times. I would not call that weak, since it still returned nearly ten times its cost, but it does show that sequels have not kept growing. Perhaps the next film, if there is one, tells us more.
How many more Insidious movies are there going to be? Six have been released, and a seventh has not been officially announced. The new Insidious movie page tracks any change. For the creative picture behind these grosses, the Insidious movies ranked list orders the films by quality, which does not always match the money.
