Insidious Timeline: Every Movie in Story Order

The Insidious timeline runs Insidious: Chapter 3 (set in 2007), The Last Key, Insidious (2011), Chapter 2, The Red Door and then Out of the Further, so the first film made is only third in story order. Out of the Further (2026) is the sixth film in both release order and story order, and it follows a new family, Gemma and Maya Hall, while Elise Rainier ties it to the earlier films. For the viewing list on its own, see insidious movies in order.

2007: Insidious: Chapter 3 Starts the StorySpoilers

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), directed by Leigh Whannell, is the first film in story order, and its events begin in 2007. Teenager Quinn Brenner visits the retired medium Elise Rainier hoping to reach her late mother, Lily, and Elise senses something hostile nearby and tells her to stop. Soon after, Quinn is hit by a car while distracted by a strange figure down the street, and she ends up at home with two broken legs, her father Sean and her brother Alex. A spirit wearing an oxygen mask starts to close in on her there.

Elise is grieving her husband and is still hunted by the Bride in Black whenever she enters the Further, so it takes her friend Carl to talk her into helping. This is also the film where she works alongside Specs and Tucker, who join her for the fight inside the Further and agree at the end to keep working together. Quinn defeats the entity with help from her mother's spirit. In the last scene Elise's dog barks at something unseen, and a red faced demon is shown watching her from behind, which links the film to the earlier ones. You can read more about Quinn Brenner and the film itself on the insidious chapter 3 page.

1953 and After: Insidious: The Last KeySpoilers

Insidious: The Last Key (2018), directed by Adam Robitel, takes the timeline back further than any other film, because its opening scenes are set in 1953 in Five Keys, New Mexico. A girl named Elise is punished by her father, Gerald, for speaking about the ghosts she sees. When she opens a red door in the basement, a demon with keys for fingers, called KeyFace, gets out, and her mother, Audrey, is killed. Think of it as the story's oldest wound, since everything Elise does later in the saga grows out of that night.

The main action comes after Chapter 3, with Elise now working as an investigator alongside Specs and Tucker. A caller named Ted Garza describes a haunting in Five Keys, and she recognizes the address as her childhood home. A hidden room inside the house, an attack on her relatives and her niece Melissa falling into a coma pull her back into the Further, where KeyFace holds the souls he has collected. Her niece Imogen and her team go in with her, and on the way they pass through a red door and glimpse a boy named Dalton in his bedroom.

How did Insidious 4 end? Gerald's spirit gives his life to protect Elise, Audrey's spirit guides the group out, Melissa wakes, and Elise settles things with her mother's spirit and her brother Christian. The closing phone call, from Lorraine Lambert asking for help with her grandson Dalton, is the hinge of the whole timeline, because it hands the story directly to the 2011 film. Cast and production details sit on the insidious the last key page.

Insidious (2011): The Lamberts Meet the FurtherSpoilers

Insidious (2011), directed by James Wan, was the first film released but sits third in story order, picking up after the phone call that closes The Last Key. The Lamberts have just moved into a new house when their son Dalton falls in the attic and cannot be woken. Doctors call it a coma, and after three months he is brought home to a house full of strange voices, apparitions and disturbances. A second move does not help, so Josh's mother Lorraine summons the psychic Elise Rainier, with Specs and Tucker at her side.

Elise's diagnosis changes the shape of the story: Dalton is not in a coma but is a projector, a person whose spirit can leave the body, and it has drifted into the Further, where restless spirits eye his empty body as a way back to the living. She adds that Josh Lambert had the same gift as a boy and buried the memory after an old woman's spirit stalked him. Under hypnosis Josh travels into the Further, confronts the red faced demon and carries his son home.

For the timeline, the last minutes matter most. Elise senses that something is still wrong, photographs Josh, and he strangles her. Renai finds the body and the photo, which shows the old woman's spirit has come back inside Josh, and Josh appears behind her as the film cuts off. That cliffhanger is exactly where Chapter 2 resumes. More detail lives on the insidious 2011 page, and you can meet Dalton and Renai on their own pages.

1986 and the Aftermath: Insidious: Chapter 2Spoilers

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), also directed by James Wan, is fourth in story order and the only film that works on two timelines at once, resuming straight after the 2011 ending while looking back to 1986. In that earlier year a young Josh is tormented by a spirit, and Lorraine brings in Elise, who has his projecting ability suppressed and his memories altered. That one scene explains why the adult Josh remembered nothing of the Further in the first film.

In the present day, Elise is dead, Josh is the main suspect, and the family takes shelter at Lorraine's house, where the haunting starts up again. Josh turns withdrawn and odd while Renai sees apparitions and hears noises she cannot place. Specs and Tucker, joined by Carl, try to reach Elise from the other side and trace the trouble to a former patient of Josh's, Parker Crane, who dressed as a woman and was driven to murder by his domineering mother, Michelle. Her spirit has locked onto Josh, and the Bride in Black is revealed to be Parker. Possessed, Josh turns on his family, and Dalton enters the spirit world to find his father's true self, helped by Elise's ghost.

Michelle's spirit is destroyed and Josh comes back to himself. Carl then has Josh and Dalton forget the ordeal, which sets up the long gap before The Red Door. The final scene follows Specs and Tucker to a girl in a coma, where Elise's spirit notices something unseen behind the child. The insidious chapter 2 page covers the cast and crew.

Nine Years Later: Insidious: The Red Door (2023)Spoilers

Insidious: The Red Door (2023), directed by Patrick Wilson, is set nine years after the second film and is fifth in story order. Josh Lambert has buried his memories of the Further, he is divorced from Renai, his mother Lorraine has recently died, and his bond with Dalton is badly strained. Josh drives Dalton to college hoping to reconnect, and the trip ends in an argument.

In his first art class Dalton paints the red door that leads into the Further, and Josh begins seeing a spirit that turns out to be his father, Ben Burton. Dalton slips into the Further by accident at a party, and his roommate Chris shows him an online video about astral projection that features Elise Rainier. Dalton sees the red faced demon from his childhood again, and Josh learns his father also projected but saw it as mental illness.

The demon takes over Dalton's body, Josh enters the Further with Renai's help and frees his son, and then Josh stays behind to hold the red door shut while Dalton escapes. Back in his body, Dalton paints over the door in black, sealing the Further. Josh is guided back by his father's spirit, passes Elise's spirit, and makes peace with Dalton. After the credits, the light above the sealed door flickers back on. See the insidious the red door page for more.

Where Insidious 6 Fits: Insidious: Out of the Further (2026)Spoilers

Insidious: Out of the Further (2026), directed by Jacob Chase, is the sixth film and the last in story order, and it opened in the US on August 21, 2026. It is a sequel in release terms, but it follows a new family rather than the Lamberts. In 1999 in Pittsburgh a young Gemma Hall witnesses her mother Ingrid's death. Two decades on, Gemma is raising her daughter Maya alone and working as a dental hygienist, and her astral projections draw her into the Further, where she learns she is a courier who can carry objects between worlds.

A cult leader named Cyrus Lam, who promises the dead can be brought back, takes an interest in her ability and uses Gemma and Maya to bring his followers and the dead into the real world. Gemma meets Ingrid again in the Further and the two reconcile, and it is revealed that Maya can project too. Gemma traps the house in the Further, and Cyrus is consumed by the resurrected dead he tried to command. Lin Shaye appears as Elise Rainier on the supernatural side of the story, which is the thread tying the film to the earlier ones.

The post credit scene shows Cyrus waking in the Further, strapped into a dental chair and tormented by a ghostly dentist, before a demon with keys for fingers locks him in a cell behind a red door. For what comes after this film, see the new insidious movie page. The insidious out of the further page has the film details.

Insidious Timeline Explained: Why the Order WorksSpoilers

The Insidious timeline is best read as two stories joined by one character: Elise Rainier ties the two prequels to the Lambert films, and the Hall family then stands on its own. Is Insidious all connected? In my opinion, yes, but loosely. Elise appears in every film in some form, Specs and Tucker travel with her from Chapter 3 onward, and the red door and the red faced demon keep returning as the series' visual rhyme.

The two prequels are built to hand off cleanly. Chapter 3 ends with the red faced demon watching Elise from behind, and The Last Key ends with the phone call from Lorraine Lambert asking about Dalton, which is the exact moment Insidious (2011) begins. It could be argued that this is the cleverest bit of structure in the saga, because the 2018 film ends by pointing at a story the audience saw seven years earlier. The Bride in Black that hunts Elise in Chapter 3 is also explained later, when Chapter 2 reveals that figure to be Parker Crane.

So, should you watch in story order or release order? Perhaps release order for a first viewing, since the shock of Elise's fate in Insidious (2011) lands harder when you have not already met her in 2007. Story order suits a second watch, when you want to follow her arc from Chapter 3 to her death. Out of the Further can sit last either way.

Do Insidious and The Conjuring connect? None of the six Insidious plots includes a Conjuring character or event, so the timeline has no Conjuring entries. If you are new to the saga, start with the insidious movies in order list, then pick up Elise Rainier and Specs and Tucker for the characters who run through it.
