What Is Insidious: The Last Key About?

Insidious: The Last Key follows the paranormal investigator Elise Rainier as she goes back to the New Mexico house where she grew up, a home haunted by a demon she let out as a child.

The film opens in 1953 in Five Keys, New Mexico. Young Elise lives in a house full of spirits, and one night she opens a red door in the basement. A demon with keys for fingers gets loose, and her mother, Audrey, is killed. Decades later Elise is a respected investigator who works with her two assistants, Specs and Tucker. A man named Ted Garza phones her about a haunting in Five Keys, and when she hears the address she realizes it is the house of her own childhood.

The Last Key is a prequel, so it is set before the events of Insidious (2011). If you are working out where it fits among the other films, the Insidious movies in order guide lays out both the release order and the story order.

What Songs Are in Insidious: The Last Key?

Joseph Bishara composed the score for Insidious: The Last Key (2018), and the album "Insidious: The Last Key (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" was released by Madison Gate Records on July 7, 2023. It is a score album with 19 tracks, so it collects Bishara's work for the film rather than a lineup of songs.

Does the film feature any songs? No featured songs are credited for The Last Key, which leaves no song to place in a particular scene. The music of the film is the score, and this album is the release attached to it.

That album arrived more than five years after the film reached theaters, so it is a late arrival compared with the film itself. If you want to hear Bishara's work for The Last Key in one place, the 19 track album is the one to look for.

For the music across the series, see the Insidious soundtrack page.

Insidious: The Last Key Summary: Full PlotSpoilers

The full plot of Insidious: The Last Key runs from a 1953 childhood trauma to a family reunion inside the Further, and it ends on a phone call that leads into the first film.

In the prologue, Elise's harsh father, Gerald, punishes her for seeing ghosts. In the basement she accidentally lets a demon called KeyFace out through the red door, and the demon kills her mother, Audrey.

In the present day Elise takes Ted Garza's call and finds that his haunted house is the home where she grew up. She goes back and uncovers a hidden room in which Ted has been holding women captive. KeyFace then attacks her family, and her niece Melissa is left in a coma. Elise is also dragged into the Further, the spirit realm where the demon keeps the souls he has taken.

There she learns that KeyFace controlled both her father and Ted, and that he fed on the fear of their victims. Elise, her niece Imogen and her team fight their way through the Further. On the way they pass through a red door and briefly see a boy named Dalton in his bedroom, a quiet nod to the family at the center of the first film.

Gerald's spirit gives his life to protect Elise. Audrey's spirit helps the group escape, Melissa wakes up, and Elise makes peace with her mother's spirit and with her brother Christian. The closing scene is a phone call from Lorraine Lambert, who asks for help with her grandson Dalton.

Insidious: The Last Key Release Date and Box Office

Insidious: The Last Key opened in US theaters on January 5, 2018, after a move from its original slot of October 20, 2017.

Universal first dated the film for October 20, 2017, in a slot it had held for an untitled Blumhouse project. It later moved the film to January 5, 2018, and the October date went to another Blumhouse thriller, Half to Death. The UK release followed on January 12, 2018, and Australia in February 2018. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 15 in the UK and M in Australia.

At the box office, The Numbers lists $67.7 million domestic and $105.1 million international, for about $172.8 million worldwide against a $10 million budget. Box Office Mojo reports different international and worldwide totals, so the figures here follow The Numbers. For how the film compares with the rest of the series, see the Insidious box office page.

Insidious: The Last Key Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Insidious: The Last Key closes Elise's personal story and then hands off to the first film, and in my opinion it is the neatest piece of series bookkeeping in the saga.

What actually happens? Elise and her allies escape the Further with help from her mother's spirit. Her father dies protecting her, and KeyFace's hold on the souls he trapped is broken. Melissa recovers, and Elise reconciles with her mother's spirit and with her brother Christian.

Why does Gerald's sacrifice matter? It could be argued that the film wants the audience to see him differently once the demon's control is revealed. KeyFace used both Gerald and Ted Garza, so the man who punished young Elise for seeing ghosts was also a puppet of the thing she let out. Gerald dying to protect her does not erase what he did, but it gives the Rainier family a resolution that horror sagas rarely bother to offer.

What is the Dalton glimpse? As the group moves through the Further they pass through a red door and briefly see a boy named Dalton in his bedroom. Whannell told TheWrap that the idea of red doors as openings between planes of existence was not planned for the first film and came from later writing. Seen that way, the door is a retcon dressed as a callback, and it works because the series had already built the Further as a place with its own geography. The Further page covers how that world has been described across the films.

What is the final call? Elise answers a phone call from Lorraine Lambert, who asks for help with her grandson Dalton. That call leads directly into Insidious (2011). It is an explicit bridge rather than a hint, and perhaps the only complaint is that the tidiness takes some of the mystery out of the Lambert case, but as a link between films it does its job.

Where Is Insidious: The Last Key Set?

Insidious: The Last Key is set in Five Keys, New Mexico, in the house where Elise Rainier grew up, which she returns to in the present day.

The house has two spaces that matter to the story. The basement holds the red door that young Elise opens in 1953, and a hidden room is uncovered in the present day. Elise is also dragged into the Further, the spirit realm where KeyFace keeps the souls he has taken.
