How Many Insidious Movies Are There?

Insidious (2011) starts with Josh and Renai Lambert moving into a new house with their sons Dalton and Foster and their baby daughter. Dalton falls from a ladder in the attic and the next day he cannot be woken, and doctors find no medical cause. Strange noises and sightings follow him home. Insidious Chapter 2 (2013), also directed by James Wan, picks up right after the first film. Insidious Chapter 3 (2015), directed by Leigh Whannell, begins in 2007. Teenager Quinn Brenner visits the retired medium Elise hoping to reach her mother Lily, and Elise warns her to stop. Soon afterward Quinn is hit by a car, breaks both legs and is stuck at home with her father Sean and brother Alex, where she starts to sense a menacing presence.

Insidious The Last Key (2018), directed by Adam Robitel, opens in 1953 in Five Keys, New Mexico, where young Elise opens a red door in the basement and lets loose a demon with keys for fingers. In the present day, a man named Ted Garza calls her about a haunting, and she realizes the house is her childhood home.

Insidious The Red Door (2023), directed by Patrick Wilson, is set nine years after the second film. Josh has buried his memories of the Further, and he drives Dalton to college hoping to reconnect. In his first art class Dalton paints the red door, and Josh begins seeing the ghost of a man.

Insidious Out of the Further (2026), directed by Jacob Chase, starts in Pittsburgh in 1999 with a young Gemma. Twenty years later she is a single mother working as a dental hygienist, and her astral projections begin carrying her into the Further, where she learns she is a courier who can move objects between that realm and the real world. Amelia Eve and Island Austin play Gemma and Maya Hall, and filming began in Melbourne in September 2025.

Chapter 3 is different because it is a prequel, it follows a new family and it was the first time Leigh Whannell sat in the director's chair. Whannell wrote and co-created the series and acts in it as Specs, so the handover stayed in the family. The Brenner household replaces the Lamberts, and Lin Shaye's Elise Rainier moves to the center of the story rather than the edge. James Wan appears on screen as a Theater Director. The scariest Insidious movie depends on which kind of fright you handle worst, because each film leans on a different figure.
