Jack Ryan Actors: Every Star Who Has Played the Analyst
Four actors have played Jack Ryan across the five theatrical films from 1990 to 2014: Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine. Ford is the only one to play the role twice, which is why four actors cover five films.

Alec Baldwin: The First Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October
Alec Baldwin was the first actor to play Jack Ryan on film, in The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan. He is billed first as Dr. Jack Ryan, ahead of Sean Connery's Soviet captain Marko Ramius, and the 135 minute film opened in the US on 2 March 1990.
The setup puts Ryan in an unusual spot for an action lead. In 1984 the Soviet Union launches Red October, a ballistic missile submarine with a nearly silent drive, and CIA analyst Ryan is called in because he knows Ramius's record. His theory is that Ramius may be trying to defect, while the US military and the Soviet ambassador both suspect an attack. Around him sit Scott Glenn as Commander Bart Mancuso of the USS Dallas, Sam Neill, Tim Curry and James Earl Jones as Vice Admiral James Greer, a character who later carries over to the Ford films (see James Greer). Basil Poledouris scored it.
On money, the film earned about $200 million worldwide against a $30 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Baldwin did not return for the sequel. Ford replaced him for Patriot Games, as reported by The Washington Post in September 1991.
Harrison Ford: Two Films as Jack Ryan
Harrison Ford played Jack Ryan twice, in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), and both were directed by Phillip Noyce. He is the only actor in the series to repeat the role in theaters.
In Patriot Games, Ryan is visiting London with his wife and daughter when he sees an attack on the royal Lord Holmes by Irish militants. He steps in, kills one attacker and is wounded, and the dead man's younger brother, Sean Miller (Sean Bean), swears to take revenge. Anne Archer plays Cathy Ryan and Thora Birch plays their daughter Sally, and both appear again in the follow up. For the family angle, see Cathy Ryan.
Clear and Present Danger moves Ryan up to acting deputy director of intelligence while Greer is treated for cancer. His inquiry into a murdered yacht owner leads to a Colombian cartel, and the film adds Willem Dafoe as the field operative John Clark. James Horner composed both scores.
The numbers are steady: Patriot Games earned about $178 million worldwide on a $45 million budget, and Clear and Present Danger about $216 million on $62 million. Both run long, at 117 and 141 minutes.
Ben Affleck: Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears
Ben Affleck played Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears (2002), directed by Phil Alden Robinson, which reached US theaters on 31 May 2002. The film resets Ryan as a junior analyst rather than the seasoned figure Ford played.
The setup starts with a lost Israeli nuclear bomb, dug up decades later by a Syrian scrap collector and sold on to a neo-Nazi network led by the Austrian billionaire Richard Dressler. Russia has a new president, Nemerov (Ciarán Hinds), and CIA director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman) brings Ryan along because of Ryan's research on the man. For more on that role, see William Cabot. Liev Schreiber plays John Clark, the same character Willem Dafoe played in the previous film, and Bridget Moynahan plays Dr. Cathy Muller. Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score.
The Sum of All Fears earned about $194 million worldwide on a $68 million budget, per Box Office Mojo, and runs 124 minutes. Affleck did not play Ryan again, and the next cinema outing was the Pine reboot twelve years later.
Chris Pine: Jack Ryan in Shadow Recruit
Chris Pine plays the fourth film Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also takes the role of the villain Viktor Cherevin. Pine's Ryan is younger than any of his predecessors, and the script shows how he became a CIA man.
The backstory starts in London, where Ryan is studying when the September 11 attacks happen. He then joins the Marines, and a helicopter shot down over Afghanistan leaves him with a badly damaged back. During rehab he meets the medical student Cathy Muller (Keira Knightley), and William Harper (Kevin Costner), a senior CIA official, signs him up as an analyst. Ten years on, Ryan sits on Wall Street under cover, tracing money for signs of terror financing.
Behind the scenes, the release moved from 25 December 2013 to 17 January 2014 and the title changed, as TheWrap reported, and Screen Daily noted a worldwide IMAX release. Patrick Doyle composed the score. At 105 minutes it is the shortest of the five films, and it earned about $136 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. No sequel followed.
Beyond the Films: John Krasinski's Series and Ghost War on Prime Video
John Krasinski plays Jack Ryan in the Prime Video series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, which is television and has no film page on this site. The most recent Jack Ryan title is Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, an Amazon MGM film made for Prime Video rather than a theatrical release.
Ghost War had a global premiere on 20 May 2026 with no theatrical run, according to TheWrap, so it sits outside the five films and the release order. Amazon lists it as streaming exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. No separate UK or Australian date was published, because the release was global.
No follow up Jack Ryan film has been announced or credibly reported, so any further film remains unconfirmed. Status, dates and any later news live on the next Jack Ryan movie page.
Who Played the Best Jack Ryan? My Ranking of the Film Actors
This is opinion, and I would put Harrison Ford first, Alec Baldwin second, Chris Pine third and Ben Affleck fourth. Ghost War is left out because it is a streaming film and not one of the five theatrical releases.
1. Harrison Ford. Ford gets two films with Noyce, and that gives his Ryan room to change. In Patriot Games he is a family man dragged back into the job, with Anne Archer and Thora Birch giving the stakes a face. By Clear and Present Danger he is an acting deputy director, with Greer's illness handing him the seat. It could be argued that no one else in the series gets to show an arc, and that is why he leads.
2. Alec Baldwin. Baldwin plays the analyst at his most analytical. His Ryan is a man with a theory that the people around him doubt, which is a very different engine from a stunt. The film belongs to the submarine hunt and to Connery's Ramius, so Baldwin plays the sharp mind in a room full of captains. That fits the material, though it also leaves him less to carry.
3. Chris Pine. Pine is handed the thinnest brief, a backstory in 105 minutes with Branagh directing and doubling as the villain. He has the physical range for the Marine side of Ryan, and the Wall Street cover job suits an analyst who is out of his depth. In my opinion the film did not give him a second go, and that is a shame.
4. Ben Affleck. The Sum of All Fears belongs to presidents, Morgan Freeman's Cabot and a bomb, and Ryan is a junior analyst on the edge of it. Affleck is solid, but he has the least room, so the ranking says more about the script than about him.
If you are choosing where to start, Ford's pair is the best entry, and the full order is on Jack Ryan movies ranked.
