Who Is Eve in Ballerina?

Eve is the lead of Ballerina (2025), a young woman raised in the Ruska Roma, the assassin tradition led by the Director, after a cult killed her father. Ana de Armas plays her and is billed first, ahead of Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Ian McShane as Winston and Anjelica Huston as the Director. Victoria Comte plays Young Eve, which is why the credits list two names for the character: "Eve" and "Young Eve".

She trains as a killer and spends years looking for the people responsible for her father's death. That single goal drives everything she does on screen, and it separates her from John Wick (2014), who left the underworld and was pulled back in by a stolen car and a dead puppy. Eve never had a retirement to lose. The work is where she was raised.

Len Wiseman directed the spin-off, which TheWrap describes as the first feature-length spinoff. It was first dated for June 7, 2024 and reached US theaters on June 6, 2025, according to Screen Daily and The Numbers. Lance Reddick appears as Charon, in what TheWrap reports was his final appearance. The Ruska Roma, the Director and the Continental will be familiar to anyone who has watched the main saga.

Eve's Story Arc: From Prague to HallstattSpoilers

Eve's arc moves through three stages: a childhood shaped by loss, a manhunt that starts in Prague, and a showdown in the Austrian lakeside town of Hallstatt. Her father is killed by a cult when she is young, and the Ruska Roma, the assassin tradition led by the Director, raises her and turns her into a killer. Victoria Comte plays Young Eve in those early years, and Ana de Armas takes over as the adult.

The adult story begins with a tip that sends Eve to Prague. There she meets Daniel Pine (Norman Reedus), a cult member who has run away to keep his daughter Ella (Ava McCarthy) safe. Pine's trail leads her to Hallstatt, where almost every resident answers to the same group, so Eve has to treat the whole town as hostile ground. She fights through the locals, and one of the film's set pieces has her using a flamethrower.

The midpoint turns personal. Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno) takes Eve prisoner and reveals that she is Eve's older sister. She also explains that their father escaped with only one daughter. Grenades wound both women, and Lena dies after telling Eve she missed her.

John Wick then enters on the Director's orders, but he allows Eve a brief window to reach the Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), who leads the cult. The Chancellor tries to escape with Ella, his granddaughter. Eve shoots him, takes the girl back and returns her to Pine, who survived. The arc closes with Eve alive and with a price on her.

All of this happens in the same stretch of time as John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, while John is excommunicado. For the cast list and release details, see the Ballerina John Wick film page.

Eve's Relationships: The Director, John Wick and Winston

Eve's most important relationships are with the Director, with John Wick and with Winston, and each one shows a different side of the assassin world. The Director, played by Anjelica Huston, leads the Ruska Roma, the tradition that raised Eve. When John tells her the Chancellor is dead, she accepts that and leaves.

John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, first arrives as the Director's answer to Eve. She sends him to stop Eve, and he gives her a short window to deal with the Chancellor. So, if you are asking why John Wick helped Eve, the film's answer is that he gave her time, and afterward he told the Director the Chancellor was dead.

Winston, played by Ian McShane, gives Eve refuge at the New York Continental. He is also the one who warns her that the cult's survivors will come after her. His long history with John is covered on the Winston John Wick page, and Lance Reddick plays Charon in the film; see Charon John Wick.

Eve's family ties carry the story. Her father's death starts her search, her sister Lena explains that their father took only Eve, and Ella is the child Eve rescues from the Chancellor. Her friend Tatiana, played by Juliet Doherty, is a dancer whose performance of Swan Lake frames the final scene.

Does Eve Die in Ballerina?Spoilers

No, Eve does not die in Ballerina: she kills the Chancellor, saves Ella and ends the film alive but with a 5 million dollar bounty on her head. After the confrontation, John Wick tells the Director the Chancellor is dead, and the Director accepts that and leaves. Eve takes refuge at the New York Continental, where Winston tells her the cult's survivors will seek revenge.

The last scene cuts to a performance of Swan Lake featuring Tatiana. In the audience, Eve gets a message about the bounty and leaves the theater. The film ends there, which leaves her hunted and open to a sequel. The next film in development for the series is John Wick 5, which Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon on April 1, 2025 with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski.

Because the bounty is open, her status is best described as alive and pursued. The John Wick timeline places her story during Chapter 3, so she is already moving through the world when John is shot and falls from the Continental's roof.

Eve's Best Moments, Ranked by Craft

In my opinion, Eve's best moments are the ones where the film lets her improvise with whatever is in the room, and the Hallstatt fight is the clearest example. When she picks up a flamethrower in the middle of the town, it breaks from the gun fu choreography the saga built around John Wick and shows that Eve is a different kind of fighter. It could be argued that this is the film's strongest case for giving her a spin-off rather than a cameo.

The second moment is the reveal of Lena. A sister who captures Eve, explains why their father took only one daughter, and then dies in a grenade blast gives the revenge plot a human cost. The scene works because Ana de Armas plays Eve as someone who has trained for violence but not for hearing that her mission left someone behind. Perhaps the film would have been stronger with more of Lena before that point, but the shock lands.

The third is John Wick's part in the story, where he gives Eve a short window to deal with the Chancellor and later tells the Director the Chancellor is dead. Seeing Keanu Reeves in a supporting role, with Eve holding the lead, is a neat inversion of the saga's usual structure. For comparison, John's arc in John Wick (2014) is about leaving the life, while Eve's is about what the life has cost her.
